Task Performance

I. Polya’s Strategy

1.) How many different rectangles with an area of 120 square units can be formed using unit squares?

Understand the problem

How many different rectangles with an area of 120 square units can be formed using unit square?

Device a plan

A sq²= L x W

A= 120sq²

Factors of 120sq²

Carry out the plan

8 different rectangles

1 x 120 =120 5 x 24 =120

2 x 60 =120 6 x 20 =120

3 x 40 =120 8 x 15 =120

4 x 30 =120 10 x 12=120

Review the solution

Double check all the factors if they are equal to 120sq²

2.) Suppose 36 students signed up for classes during orientation session. If exactly 22 signed up for
Chemistry and exactly 18 of them signed up for English, how many of them signed up for both Chemistry
and English? How many of them signed for Chemistry only? How many of them signed up for English
only?

Understand the problem

36 students signed up

22 signed up for Chemistry

18 signed up for English

How many of them signed up for both chemistry and English?

Device a plan

List out 36 students then assign each for

Chemistry, English or both

Carry out the plan

Signed up for both chemistry and English

36 – 22 = 14

18 – 14 = 4

Review the solution

English 18 – 4 = 14

Chemistry 22 – 4 = 18

Then,

18 + 4 + 14 =36

36=36

3.) An online game tournament was facilitated and begins with 1024 players. Each game has 4 players,
and in each game, only 1 winner will advance to the next round. How many games must be played to
determine the winner?

Understand the problem

Out of 1024 players, each game has 4 players

And only 1 winner will advance to the next round.

How many games must be played to determine the winner?

Device a plan

We will need to divide 1024 by 4 until we get to the value of 1

Carry out the plan

1024 players ÷ 4 = 256 Games

256 players ÷ 4 = 64 Games

64 players ÷ 4 = 16 Games

16 players ÷ 4 = 4 Games

4 players ÷ 4 = 1 Game
Out of this solution add all the games and 341 games will needed to be played in determining the
winner.

Review the solution

256 + 64 + 16 + 4 + 1 = 341 games

Double check if the variables are solved with its corresponding method.

Based from the KenKen puzzle that I made, I followed the rules mentioned in the handouts
where the smallest input should be 1, and the highest input should be equal to the number of rows and
columns of the puzzle which is 6. I used Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and division to formulate
the given, then after that I answered it. I also made sure there’s no repetition of input or number in the
same column and row.
