Characteristics of Matter

Objectives:
1. Identify the characteristics of matter.
2. Classify objects according to its characteristics.

Learning Time!

Matter comes in different shapes and sizes. All the objects that you see around you differ from
each other. They differ from size, shape, color and texture. Take a look at the objects below.
How do they differ from each other?

1. Size
How can you tell if an object is big or small?
Some objects are big, others are small. Some objects are very big while others are
very small. The picture below shows different kinds of objects. Can you name each
object?
You can compare the sizes of objects. You can also classify them according to their
sizes. Can you classify the objects in the picture above according to their sizes?

2. Shapes
Objects have different shapes. Can you tell the shape of your notebook? What
about your favourite toy? Matter comes in different shapes. Study the basic shapes below.

If you are going to look around, you can see that objects have different shapes.
Some objects are circular in shape. A circle has no side, a square has four equal side, and a
rectangle has 2 equal sides while the triangle has 3 equal side. There are also objects that have
elongated circular shape. They are called oblong. An egg is an example of an oblong shape.
Some objects have irregular shapes, look at the examples below.

3. Colors
What is your favourite color? Can you send objects that have the same
color as the color wheel below?

Matter comes in different colors. There are many types of colors. Some colors are
called primary colors. These are red, yellow and blue.
If these colors are combined, you can have another color such as green, violet and
orange. These are called secondary colors.

Primary and Secondary color are some colors of matter. Color makes the object
pleasing to the eyes. You can classify objects according to their color.

Below are some common colors. Write the name of some objects that have the
given colors.

4. Textures
Have you ever touched an object that is smooth or rough? How can you
say that an object is smooth or rough?
Matter comes in different textures. It is the feeling you get when you touch
objects. Your skin can identify the feel or texture of an object. You can tell if an
object is smooth or rough. You can also tell is soft or hard.
Give some examples of objects that have the following textures and feel.
