b. A water tank is made with 10 mm thick plates. The plates are joined by single bolted lap
joint using 16 mm diameter ordinary bolt at a pitch of 50 mm . Find the efficiency of joint .

c. An 150 mm x115 mm x 12 mm angle section is to be connected to a 12 mm thick gusset
plate at site. Design the fillet weld to carry a load equal to the strength of the member. 5
d. How does strain hardening and initial imperfections affect the strength of columns ? 4
2. A bracket plate is shop welded to the flange of a column as shown in Fig. 1. Design the
connection. 12
OR
A T-stub cut from MB 600 is connected to the column HB 400 using 12 nos. M16 bolts as
shown in Fig. 2. Find the design load P that can be applied at an eccentricity 150 mm. The
grade of steel is E250.

3. a. Find the ultimate design load of the compression member whose cross section is shown
in Fig. 3. The effective length of member is 4m. 8
b. Design a slab base for a built up column consisting of 2 MC 250 placed back to back
separated by a distance of 160 mm . The factored axial load on the column is 1200 kN. 4
4. A welded plate girder of 18 m span having flange plates 400x16 mm for each flange and
200x10 mm web. Compute the sectional properties and moment of resistance of the plate
girder . Design also the end bearing and intermediate transverse stiffener, if the girder is
subjected to U.D.L. of 120 kN/m . 12
5. Design the end bearing stiffeners for a welded plate girder of 20 m span using tension field
action for the following factored forces:
maximum moment, Mz = 4500 kNm
maximum shear force = 850 kN
The girder is laterally restrained. Use steel of grade E300 and assume stress of steel to be
300 MPa irrespective of thickness of plates. Connection need not be designed. Consider
size of web 1400x8, spacing of stiffeners c = 2000 mm. 12
