Assignment No. 4
Detailing of Beam and Column Connections

Note: All the solutions must provide the appropriate sectional details with complete dimensioning and
sufficient number of views as per the standard symbols and representations.

1. Detail end plate connection between an MB 300@451.3N/m beam and HB 200 @365.9 N/m Column to
transfer a vertical factored shear of 120 kN and a factored hogging B.M. of 120 kNm using HSFG bolts
of diameter 20 mm as per the details shown below:

Note: Missing sectional data (if any) may be assumed as per codal provisions or may be obtained
through associated design calculations

2. Detail a T-stub connection to transfer service condition shear force of 100 kN and service condition
bending moment of 35 kNm from the end of a beam MB 350 @514.0 N/m to a column HB 300 @618.0
N/m using M16 & M20 bolts of product grade C and property class 4.6 as per the details given below:

Note: Missing sectional data (if any) may be assumed as per codal provisions or may be obtained
through associated design calculations

3. Detail a stiffened seat connection to transfer a factored shear of 400 kN from a beam MB 550 @ 1020
N/m column HB @ 855.4 N/m using 9 mm size field shop fabricated fillet weld as per the details given
below:

through associated design calculations

4. If two bracket plates are connected to the flanges of the column SC 250 @856N/m, as shown in Fig. 1.
Design and detail the moment resistant bolt connection if a load P =165kN is applied at an eccentricity
of 300mm. The grade of the structural steel is E250 and M20 bolts of product grade C and property class
4.6 are used.

5. Design and detail bracket connection to transfer a service load of 150kN as per the details given in Fig.
2. The grade of the structural steel is E250 and M20 bolts of product grade C and property class 4.6 are
used.

6. An ISMB 300@433.6 N/m beam has to be connected

to the flange of an ISHB 200@392.4 N/m column to
transfer a factored load of 120 kN. Provide a bolted
unstiffened seat connection (Fig. 3) for the following
data:
a. Use a seat angle = ISA 150×75×12
b. Use a cleat angle = ISA 100×75×8
c. Provide 4 bolts of 20 mm diameter to
connect the connected leg of the seat angle
to the flange of the column.
d. Provide 2 bolts of 20 mm diameter to
connect the outstanding leg of the seat angle
to the flange of the beam.
e. Provide the cleat angle to connect the top
flange of the beam and the flange of the
column with 2 bolts of 20 mm diameter on
each leg.
Draw the detailed front view, side view and plan
of the connection.

7. An ISMB 350@514 N/m beam has to be connected

to the flange of an ISHB 300@618 N/m column to
transfer a factored load of 275kN. Provide a bolted
stiffened seat connection (Fig. 4) for the following
data.
a. Use a seat angle = ISA 200×100×12
b. Use a cleat angle = ISA 60×60×8
c. Use two vertical stiffener angles of size ISA
80×80×10
d. Provide 4 bolts of 20 mm diameter to
connect the connected leg of the seat angle
to the flange of the column.
e. Provide 12 bolts of 20 mm diameter to
connect the connected leg of the stiffener
angle to the flange of the column with a
packing plate of thickness 12 mm.
f. Provide 5 tack bolts of 20 mm diameter to
connect the outstanding leg of the stiffener
angles.
g. Provide 2 bolts of 20 mm diameter to
connect the outstanding leg of the seat angle
to the flange of the beam.
h. Provide the cleat angle to connect the top
flange of the beam and the flange of the
column with 2 bolts of 20 mm diameter on
each leg.
Draw the detailed front view, side view and plan
of the connection.
