Question 1 [CLO1][PLO1][C3]: [5 Marks]

As a consultant engineer, you need to evaluate the series dc motor of 250V with
compensating winding and total series resistance RA+RS=0.08Ω. The series winding consists
of 25 turns per pole with magnetizing curve shown in figure 1. DETERMINE

a) The speed of this motor when armature current is 50A

b) The torque of this motor when armature current is 50A
c) Precautions need to take while using this machine?

Question 2 [CLO3][PLO1][C3]: [5 Marks]

A juice manufacturing unit is using a 180 kW, 430 V, 450 A, and 1800 r/min Separately
Excited DC generator as shown in figure 2. As per user manual, the values of the generator
components are shown in the figure. The machine has compensating windings. The
variable resistance in the field circuit is set at 60Ω. The generator normally runs at 1700
r/min. The generators magnetization curve is shown in figure 3. Employ the concepts of
DC generator’s operation to DETERMINE

a) No-Load terminal voltage of the generator?

b) The new terminal voltage, if 350A is drawn from the generator?

b) APPLY the knowledge of residual magnetic field to draw up the diagram of
voltage buildup process of a shunt DC generator?
c) IDENTIFY two major effects that disturb the commutation in real DC machines
and WRITE three approaches or solutions that have been developed to partially or
completely correct these problems.
