Emergency Overview
Physical Description & Colour: coloured granules.
Odour: No data re odour.
Major Health Hazards: Azadirachtin is harmful to humans. Symptoms of acute exposure to organophosphate or
cholinesterase-inhibiting compounds may include the following: numbness, tingling sensations, incoordination,
headache, dizziness, tremor, nausea, abdominal cramps, sweating, blurred vision, difficulty breathing or respiratory
depression, and slow heartbeat. Very high doses may result in unconsciousness, incontinence, and convulsions or
fatality. harmful if swallowed. Signs and symptoms associated with mild exposures to organophosphate and
carbamate pesticides include: headache, fatigue, dizziness, loss of appetite with nausea, stomach cramps and
diarrhoea; blurred vision associated with excessive tearing; contracted pupils of the eye; excessive sweating and
salivation; slowed heartbeat, often fewer than 50 per minute; rippling of surface muscles just under the skin. These
symptoms may be mistaken for those of flu, heat stroke or heat exhaustion, or upset stomach. Moderately severe
organophosphate and carbamate insecticide poisoning cases exhibit all the signs and symptoms found in mild
poisonings, but in addition, the victim: is unable to walk; often complains of chest discomfort and tightness; exhibits
marked constriction of the pupils (pinpoint pupils); exhibits muscle twitching; has involuntary urination and bowel
movement. Severe poisonings are indicated by incontinence, unconsciousness and seizures.
Extinguishing Media: Not combustible. Use extinguishing media suited to burning materials.
Fire Fighting: If a significant quantity of this product is involved in a fire, call the fire brigade.
Flash point: Does not burn.
Upper Flammability Limit: Does not burn.
Lower Flammability Limit: Does not burn.
Autoignition temperature: Not applicable - does not burn.
Flammability Class: Does not burn.
The ADI for Azadirachtin is set at 0.003mg/kg/day. The corresponding NOEL is set at 0.03mg/kg/day. ADI
means Acceptable Daily Intake; NOEL means No-observable-effect-level. Data from Australian ADI List, June
2014.
No special equipment is usually needed when occasionally handling small quantities. The following instructions are
for bulk handling or where regular exposure in an occupational setting occurs without proper containment systems.
Ventilation: This product should only be used in a well ventilated area. If natural ventilation is inadequate, use of a fan
is suggested.
Eye Protection: Eye protection such as protective glasses or goggles is recommended when this product is being
used.
Skin Protection: You should avoid contact even with mild skin irritants. Therefore you should wear suitable
impervious elbow-length gloves and facial protection when handling this product. See below for suitable material
types.
Protective Material Types: We suggest that protective clothing be made from the following materials: rubber.
Respirator: If there is a significant chance that dusts are likely to build up in the area where this product is being
used, we recommend that you use a suitable dust mask.
Safety deluge showers should, if practical, be provided near to where this product is being handled commercially.
Teratogenic effects: Available evidence suggests that Azadirachtin is not teratogenic. No birth defects were seen in
the offspring of male and female rats fed 1.0 mg/kg/day during a three-generation reproduction and fertility study.
Mutagenic effects: There is no evidence that Azadirachtin is mutagenic. No evidence of mutagenicity was found in
any of four tests performed.
Carcinogenic effects: There is no evidence that Azadirachtin is carcinogenic.
Organ toxicity: Azadirachtin primarily affects the nervous system through inhibition of cholinesterase, an enzyme
required for proper nerve functioning.
Fate in humans and animals: Azadirachtin is readily absorbed into the bloodstream through the gastrointestinal tract
if it is ingested, through the lungs if it is inhaled, or through the skin if there is dermal exposure. In humans,
Azadirachtin and its principal metabolites are eliminated rapidly. There is no data to hand indicating any particular
target organs.

Section 12 - Ecological Information
Toxic to aquatic organisms, may cause long-term adverse effects to the aquatic environment. This product is
biodegradable. It will not accumulate in the soil or water or cause long term problems.
Effects on birds: Azadirachtin is moderately to very highly toxic to birds.
Effects on aquatic organisms: Azadirachtin is very highly toxic to freshwater fish, aquatic invertebrates and
estuarine and marine organisms. Cholinesterase inhibition was observed in acute toxicity tests of fish exposed to very
low concentrations of this insecticide. Application of concentrations as low as 0.01 pounds of active ingredient per
acre may cause fish and aquatic invertebrate deaths. Due to its high acute toxicity and its persistence in sediments,
Azadirachtin may represent a hazard to sea bottom dwellers. Smaller organisms appear to be more sensitive than
larger ones.
Effects on other organisms: Aquatic and general agricultural uses of Azadirachtin pose a serious hazard to wildlife
and honeybees.
Environmental Fate:
Breakdown in soil and groundwater: Azadirachtin is moderately persistent in soils. The half-life of Azadirachtin in
soil is usually between 60 and 120 days, but can range from 2 weeks to over 1 year, depending on the soil type,
climate, and other conditions. Azadirachtin adsorbs strongly to soil particles and it is not readily soluble in water. It is
therefore immobile in soils and unlikely to leach or to contaminate groundwater. TCP, the principal metabolite of

Azadirachtin, adsorbs weakly to soil particles and appears to be moderately mobile and persistent in soils.
Breakdown in water: The concentration and persistence of Azadirachtin in water will vary depending on the type of
formulation. The rate of hydrolysis is constant in acidic to neutral waters, but increases in alkaline waters. In water at
pH 7.0 and 25°C, it had a half-life of 35 to 78 days.
Breakdown in vegetation: Azadirachtin may be toxic to some plants, such as lettuce. Residues remain on plant
surfaces for approximately 10 to 14 days. Data indicate that this insecticide and its soil metabolites can accumulate in
certain crops.
