Getting the Map

Remote Sensing and GIS into the Computer

Lecture#07

GIS maps are digital not analog GIS Data Conversion

 Maps have a communications function  Traditionally most of the cost of a GIS project
 A map has a storage function for spatial data  One time cost
 Somehow, the visually “stored” data must get digital  Depends on reuse
 Real and Virtual maps  Requires maintenance
Finding Existing Map Data Existing Map Data

 Map libraries  Existing map data can be found through a map

 Reference books library, via network searches, or on media such as
 State and local agencies CD-ROM and disk.
 Government agencies  Many major data providers make their data
available via the World Wide Web, a network of file
 Commercial data suppliers e.g. CEGIS, GDT
servers available over the Internet.
(Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing),
Thompson, Graphosman  GIS vendors package data with products.

Geocoding methods for maps Digitizing

Digitizing  Captures map data by tracing lines from a
map by hand
Scanning
 Uses a cursor and an electronically-
Field data collection sensitive tablet
 Result is a string of points with (x, y) values

 Digitize control

 Determine coordinate transformation

 Trace features

 Proof plot

 Cursor data entry

 Voice command entry

 Point select

 Duplicate lines  Places a map on a glass plate, and
 Duplicate nodes passes a light beam over it
 Unended lines  Measures the reflected light intensity

 Gaps  Result is a grid of pixels

 Image size and resolution are important

 Flat bed
 Drum Field data collection

 File size
