2.2 Platform lift operator
At least one responsible person must be appointed for each platform lift; this person must be easily
reachable during the operating time of the installation. The installation must be maintained in a safe
condition. If the system is found to be unsafe, it must be taken out of service immediately; danger
zones must be secured. Accidents must be reported immediately to the expert (lift inspector or
installation company) or the manufacturer.

The person in charge must make sure on a weekly basis that there are no obviously dangerous
operational defects and that the tasks listed in the chapter "Duties of the platform lift operator" are
being carried out carefully.

2.3 User group

The platform lift may only be used by competent, qualified and responsible persons who are familiar
with the system. The user must be able to assume responsibility for himself and for third parties.

Persons who do not meet these requirements, as well as children, may only be transported by
accompanying persons who also assume responsibility for the person being transported.

2.4 Range of application

The platform lift may only be used on stairs or accessible ramps. It is recommended to install the
system in predominantly dry rooms. The ambient temperature must not be below -15 °C or above
+ 40°C. This type is not suitable for use in unusual locations (e.g. explosive areas, areas with
aggressive media, etc.).

Outdoor use is possible in principle, however, in the case of outdoor installations that are exposed
to the weather, it may be necessary to clear parts of the installation of ice and snow in winter on a
case-by-case basis.

2.5 Qualified workers

Installation, maintenance, repairs and checks must be carried out by qualified persons, preferably by
companies authorised by Lehner Lifttechnik.

2.6 Decommissioning
When the unit is taken out of service for cleaning, maintenance or repair work, it must be protected
against unintentional movement. The key switches on the call stations must be switched off and the
keys removed.

Sigma | User Manual Version 09/2022 Page 3

2.7 Intended use
Preventive checks and regular maintenance of the unit are highly recommended and will guarantee
you long-term, safe operation.

2.7.1 Safety instructions

Observe the following points for correct use:

▪ The platform lift is built to transport physically disabled persons with wheelchairs, as
well as persons standing on the platform.
▪ The platform lift is not intended for transporting goods.
▪ Always lock the platform lift so that it cannot be operated by unauthorised persons
(e.g. children playing).
▪ Adhere to the specified maximum loads and observe the available platform size.
▪ Observe instructions attached to the unit.
▪ The platform lift must be maintained and safety-checked at the prescribed intervals.

▪ Do not use the platform lift in case of fire! There could be a power failure during the
ride and the user would be trapped.
▪ Never exceed the permissible payload. The payload is indicated on the control panel
of the platform.
▪ Never bring your hands or loose clothing near the track or the grinding wall when
the lift is running.
▪ Do not open the swivel doors by force.
▪ Do not disable any safety device by making mechanical or electrical changes to the
installation. Without the written consent of Lehner Lifttechnik, all types of adjustments
and/or modifications to the system are prohibited

Sigma | User Manual Version 09/2022 Page 4

2.7.2 Use of the platform lift

The platform lift may only be used if it is in technically perfect condition. Any malfunction that could
affect safety must be avoided or eliminated.

Report anything unusual to your service technician. Do not use the platform lift in case of
irregularities and unusual noises - call the service immediately. All instructions and directions from
experts, fitters and service personnel must be followed.

Before entering the up or down command, make sure that no one is endangered by the
movement of the system. Always look in the direction of travel!

The transport of goods is only permitted if sufficient stability is ensured so that they cannot slip or
fall over.

Also, keep the keys in a safe place and do not give them to unauthorised persons. Do not leave the
keys on the vehicle or at the call points when the lift is not in use.

4 SAFETY DEVICES OF THE SIGMA
The Sigma platform lift is equipped with the following safety device:

4.1 Travelling platform swing door

The swing door, which must be closed during travel, prevents falling from the platform. Instead of
the manual swing door, an automatic swing door can also be installed as an option.

4.2 Safety bottom

The safety bottom is attached to the underside of the platform on platform lifts and serves as
additional safety. It reacts to pressure so that the system stops immediately if the safety floor hits an
obstacle. The travel command in upward direction remains active.

4.3 Contact bar acting upwards

There is a contact strip in the front area of the platform which prevents jamming in the upward
direction. The travel command in downward direction remains active.

4.4 Overload device

The platform is equipped with an overload device. If the load capacity specified on the type plate is
exceeded by more than 25%, an overload switch switches off the system, an acoustic signal sounds
and the overload status is indicated on the display. In this condition it is not possible to drive off.

The platform must never be overloaded. If an overload is signalled, the loading must be
reduced immediately.

4.5 Emergency stop

The platform lift is equipped with an emergency stop button. If you need to stop the platform in an
emergency, press the red button and the lift stops. Unlocking is done by pressing it again or turning
it clockwise.

4.6 Alarm button

The platform is equipped with an alarm button to summon help. By pressing the alarm button, a
loud emergency signal sounds.

4.7 Overspeed governor and safety gear

The platform lift is equipped with a overspeed governor and a safety gear. If the platform moves
downwards at an increased speed (e.g. due to a defect or similar), the increased speed is
immediately detected by the overspeed governor and the safety gear is triggered. The safety gear
brings the platform to a standstill by holding it on the guide rails. This prevents the platform from
falling.

Sigma | User Manual Version 09/2022 Page 8

4.8 Battery charging system
The drive motor of your platform lift is powered by batteries, which are charged via a charger. The
charging is permanent (also while driving).

If the platform lift is not charged, the lift will emit a short beep every second after 5
seconds. Check that the lift or the charger is connected to the mains. Turn off the main
switch on the back of the platform (the lift will stop beeping) and check if there is a power
failure in your building or if the fuse or RCD in the stairlift power supply circuit is not in
order. Replace the fuse or switch on the RCD and then the main switch at the rear of the
platform. If the lift continues to beep, please call the service department, it could be that
the battery charger is faulty.

If the battery voltage for the travel drive of the lift becomes too low, a long beep sounds
every 2.5 seconds while the lift is travelling. If the charger is connected and the lift still
beeps during travel even after charging the batteries, the batteries are defective. The
batteries must now be replaced by the service department. If the platform lift continues
to operate despite weak batteries, the control is programmed so that the platform will
reach the lower landing in any case with the remaining battery voltage.

5.3 Swing doors manual/automatic
Swing doors serve to close off the driving area of the platform. The doors are locked while driving
and in parking position.

To open (unlock) a swing door, the following must be done

▪ the system must be switched on,
▪ the platform is in the corresponding stop,
▪ the travel command can be given at the switched-on call station of the corresponding stop
or the travel command can be given at the platform control for the corresponding stop.

Manual swing door

The manual swing door must be opened manually.

▪ The manual swing door can be opened when the stage has reached the landing.
▪ If the platform is already at the desired stop, pressing the travel command button on the
switched-on call station or on the platform control unlocks the door and the swing door can be
opened!
▪ The corresponding swing door remains unlocked after reaching the stop or after pressing the
corresponding drive command for the set time in which the door can be opened. If the locking
time has expired, the corresponding drive command button on the call station or on the platform
control must be pressed again.
▪ The opening time is adjustable.
▪ The doors must be closed after each journey.

Automatic swing door

The automatic swing door is opened by an electric door drive.

▪ The automatic swing door opens when the platform has reached the stop. During opening, the
drive command button does not have to be pressed!
▪ If the platform is already at the desired stop, pressing the drive command button on the
switched-on call station or on the platform control automatically opens the door!
▪ The opening time is adjustable.

Always make visual contact with the door! After the opening time of the automatic swing
door has expired, it automatically turns back into the closed position!

Take care that no one is trapped, injured or otherwise put in danger when closing. Keep your hands
away from closing/opening doors.

6 OPERATING THE PLATFORM
The platform lift is safe and easy to use. The operation is optimally adapted to the user with walking
difficulties.

Before moving the platform, make absolutely sure that nobody is endangered by the
movement of the platform and the swing doors. If a dangerous situation arises while the
platform is moving, stop the platform immediately by releasing the command button!

6.1 Call the platform

If the platform is not at the desired stop, it can be summoned with the call station. The platform can
only be controlled from the stops when the swing doors are closed.

▪ Switch on the call station by inserting the key and turning it. The green lamp now lights up.
▪ Press the drive command button "Up" or "Down". The platform moves in the corresponding
direction as long as the button remains pressed. If you release the button during travel, the
platform stops immediately.
▪ The platform stops independently at the stops.
▪ Switch the call station off again when the platform has stopped in the stop by turning and
removing the key.

The lift can only be controlled from the stops when the swing doors are closed.

6.2 Opening the swing door and driving on the platform

Manual swing door

When the platform has arrived at the landing, the swing door can be opened manually.

When the door is opened, the control commands of the call stations are automatically cancelled so
that the platform cannot be operated by another person at the same time and safe travel on the
platform is ensured.

You can now drive on the platform.

Close the swing door manually again; this enables steering from the platform.

Automatic swing door

When the platform has arrived at the landing, the swing door opens automatically. Please note that
you are not in the door's turning range while it is opening.

When the door is opened, the control commands of the call stations are automatically cancelled so
that the lift cannot be operated by another person at the same time and safe travel on the platform
is guaranteed.

You can now drive on the platform.

The automatic swing door closes again automatically after an opening time set during installation.
Please ensure that you are not in the door's turning range when it is closing.

Sigma | User Manual Version 09/2022 Page 13

If an acoustic signal sounds when driving on the platform, the platform is overloaded and
must be unloaded again immediately.

6.3 Driving with the platform

On the platform there is a key switch, the drive command buttons, an alarm button and an
emergency stop button.

The wheelchair must be secured against rolling on the platform by a parking brake or, in
the case of electric wheelchairs, by equivalent measures (e.g. switching off)! Hold on to
the handrail!

The drive command is given by pressing the drive command button for the desired direction. Keep
the drive command button pressed until you reach the desired stop.

If you release the drive command button while driving, the vehicle stops immediately. If the vehicle
does not stop when the drive command button is released, an emergency stop (red button) has
been installed for additional safety. If this emergency stop is pressed, the system stops immediately.
The emergency stop button is unlocked again by pressing it again or turning it clockwise.

6.4 Leaving the platform

The lift is designed so that the platform stops in the right place in the stops. After the platform has
stopped in the desired stop, you can release the travel command button.

Manual swing door

Open the swing door manually again. You can now leave the platform. After leaving the platform,
the manual swing door must be closed so that the call stations become active again. The platform
can now be called to a desired location or used by another person.
Automatic swing door
The automatic swing door opens automatically. You can now leave the platform.
Depending on the lifting height, there may be a small step between the platform level and the
stop level (caution: risk of tripping).
The automatic swing door closes again automatically after an opening time set during
installation. Please ensure that you are not in the door's turning range when it is closing!

7 TROUBLESHOOTING
7.1 General
For safety reasons, your Sigma platform lift is fitted with a number of electrical and mechanical
interlocks and touch sensitive edges. If any of these devices are not in order or any component or
sequence is not working correctly, the unit will not operate. In the event of a breakdown, you can
independently check your system for faults with the support of the points listed below or contact the
service personnel. Under no circumstances may you manipulate, modify, or remove the safety
devices of the system.

In the event of a malfunction, the following instructions must be worked through completely, point
by point. Do not skip any step!

Before you start, consider the following points:

• Visually inspect the entire installation for damage, deformations, etc.

• Check that the system is switched on. If your lift beeps while driving or in the stop position,
please read the description of the beeper in the chapter "Battery charging system".
• Please ensure that the lift cannot be operated from the call stations while the platform is
folded down or someone is operating the system from the platform.
• Check whether the main switch of the platform, which is located on the left side of the
platform, is switched on. The green lamp on the switch must now light up!
• Check whether the batteries (if any) in the call stations are empty and have them replaced
with new ones if necessary.
• Also note that the first call station to be activated by a command signal takes control of the
lift (provided that no one operates the controls on the platform), so no other call stations
can be used until that command signal is deactivated.
• When calling for service, please have the system number to hand. This is located on the type
plate on the front side of the stairlift and is marked with the serial number "LE xxxxx". This
number is the quickest way to identify your lift and provide you with efficient information.

8 LIBERATION OF A PASSENGER
If the platform remains in an occupied state somewhere between the stops and all the above points
have been checked, the passenger can be released.

Passenger rescue may only be carried out by instructed persons. Two persons are
absolutely required!

8.1 Emergency driving mode

The emergency lowering mode can be used to move the platform up and down in the event of a
malfunction. Use the emergency lowering only if the control on the platform or the landing calls do
not work properly.

There is an increased risk of crushing. All safety devices are deactivated. This means that
no safety elements such as the safety bottom or the contact bar are functioning. Before
operating the emergency lowering, make sure that no persons are endangered and no
objects can be trapped under the platform.

The platform does NOT stop by itself in the stop area. One must bring the platform into
the stop with utmost care and stop the movement by releasing the drive button. At the
lower stop, avoid the platform touching down on the ground; the platform must stop
beforehand! At the upper stop, the platform must not be moved above the level of the
upper stop!

The emergency drive works electrically via the batteries and is located on the frame of the upper
swing door. A small metal cover must be unscrewed to operate the emergency drive buttons.

First move the platform up a few centimetres and then to the nearest stop, i.e. either down
or up. This can deactivate an accidentally triggered safety gear and is necessary in this case
to avoid damaging the chain.

The emergency drive mode brings the platform to the desired stop, but cannot unlock the manual or
automatic swing doors. The swing doors must therefore be unlocked manually (see the following
chapter).

Sigma | User Manual Version 09/2022 Page 17

8.2 Emergency release of swing doors
The following instructions are only to be used if the lift is not working and there is a person on the
platform who needs to be freed. All swing doors are equipped with an emergency release. Emergency
release keys may only be used by persons trained for this purpose A "triangular key" is used as an
emergency release tool.

If the platform is not behind the door, no emergency unlocking of the upper door should
be carried out (DANGER OF FALLING!).

1. Before using the emergency release key, switch off the controls and remove the keys.
2. The upper swing door or the platform door can be unlocked manually with the emergency
release key.
3. Secure open shaft accesses so that no one can fall into the shaft.
4. After opening, the manual swing door should be locked again and activated.
5. After closing the door, check that the latch is in the closed position by shaking and pulling the
door.
6. Store the emergency release key again safely and securely against unauthorised use.

Automatic swing door

First, the mechanical power transmission from the door drive motor to the swing door must be
removed. To do this, the cover of the door motor must be removed. Below the motor are the worm
screws for power transmission between the motor drive shaft and the door hinge. These worm
screws must be removed.

Now the automatic door opener is separate from the swing door. Now the door lock on the opposite
side can be opened in the same way as described for the manual door on the previous page.

After opening, the automatic swing door should be locked again.

Sigma | User Manual Version 09/2022 Page 19

8.3 Recovery of a wheelchair user
A trapped person can also be rescued directly from the platform. This should be done by the local
fire brigade and lift attendant. If emergency operation of the platform is also no longer possible, the
person must be freed using the emergency release key:

1. Before using the emergency release key, switch off the controls and remove the keys.
2. Unlock and open the swing door at the appropriate stop for recovery.
3. If it is easier to free the person via the upper landing, use the emergency release key to unlock
the upper door and open it by hand. Caution: Danger of falling!
4. The wheelchair user can now be lifted carefully from the platform. Carry out the rescue from
the level from which the rescue is easiest and safest! Always do this with two people!
5. Close the swing door again and lock it.
6. The platform must now be closed for further use!
7. Call the service!

After a case of personal rescue, the platform lift may under no circumstances continue to

13 DUTIES OF THE PLATFORM LIFT OPERATOR
If prescribed, the system may only be put into operation after acceptance by a civil technical expert
and presentation of a defect-free expert report! Otherwise, safe operation cannot be guaranteed!

Always make sure that an instructed person is available next to the user. The user must be able to
reach this person easily in order to ensure that he/she can be rescued in an emergency (e.g. technical
defect).

If an emergency call system for summoning help is installed, it must be checked regularly, but at
least once a week, to ensure that it is functioning properly.

If external help is summoned (e.g. by telephone), an access possibility for the summoned help
personnel must be created.

The system operator is obliged to ensure adequate maintenance of the system. It is therefore of
particular importance that a scheduled maintenance service is established with a maintenance
company before the platform lift is put into operation.

Maintenance must be entrusted to competent persons to ensure the comprehensive safety of the
platform lift. General maintenance instructions can be found in the relevant chapter of this operator's
manual.

The use of the system must be strictly limited to the specified purpose.

The user manual shall be kept in a suitable place which is accessible to all authorised persons in case
of need.

Safe access to the building and the platform lift must be ensured, especially for emergencies, to
carry out maintenance work or inspections.

Irregularities during operation or emergency situations must be reported immediately to the

maintenance company. In addition, the maintenance company must be informed of all changes to
the building and the system that could affect operation.
