IV. WE’RE ON OUR WAY

Activity 1.1: Safe Space (Reflective Assessment)

Instructions: Share your experiences as prompted by the guide question and reflect about the lessons
you learned from them. (10 POINTS EACH QUESTION)

Guide Questions:

A. What Filipino tradition/s have you and your family been observing for a long time? How does the
practice of this tradition impact your life as a child and individual? (cultural)

— My family and Filipinos are observing a tradition of respect for the elderly. Like “pagmamano”, and
using “Po” at “Opo” and also calling our older siblings or elders Ate or Kuya.

B. In a barkada, there are people who have different personalities. For you, how do the backgrounds of
your friends affect how they behave inside your social circle? Reflect on your own behaviors as well.
(social)

– In our barkada, there are those who are close to me and understand they are the people who I can
trust and be there with me when I need them. Also if they give me more respect I will give them respect
too. The more friends you have and the more time you spend with them, the happier you are :)

C. What do you think of the Philippine government’s response to the COVID pandemic? How do the
COVID-related policies of the government affect you as an individual? (political)

—The government's response to strict quarantine restrictions and health protocols, restricted mobility of
people as well as the operational capacity of business.

D. As a Filipino, what aspect of our culture and society do you want to change? Why do you want this to
change? What can you do to ensure that this change will take place? (Practice of agency)

—As a Filipino, I want to change the aspect of common issues in our nation.
Some examples of issues that are commonly discussed include poverty, corruption, and inequality.
Efforts to address these issues can include implementing policies and programs that promote economic
growth and development, strengthening institutions and systems of governance, and increasing access
to education and opportunities for marginalized communities.

Additionally, addressing cultural attitudes and practices that perpetuate discrimination and inequality,
such as discrimination against women and members of the LGBTQ+ community, promoting education
and awareness about these issues can also be an effective way to make change.

However, Changing a culture and society is a complex process that requires the participation and
commitment of individuals, community, organizations and the government. It requires a collective effort,
coordination, and long-term vision. Everyone can contribute in their own ways, from volunteering,
participating in community activities, supporting organizations that work to promote social change, to
running for public office or supporting candidates who share the same vision for change.

It's important to note that change doesn't happen overnight and it's often a long process, but steady
progress can be made if we work together towards a common goal.
