Based on the above regulations item 4.1, a fast response type sprinkler head is to be used. GW-S Pendent
Spray (SSP) Quick Response Sprinkler, 68oC temperature bulb, K80, 15mm nominal bore with a coverage area
of 2.5 metres radius at ceiling height of 2.2 metres and running pressure of 0.5 bar minimum.

1. Description of Manual Sprinkler System

High speed crafts may require lighter weight materials of construction than traditional vessels. The
fire safety philosophy that differs from conventional vessels and these standards applies specifically to
the accommodation areas of the high speed craft. The standards for fixed sprinkler system for high
speed craft are permitted using manual sprinkler systems or automatic sprinkler systems or a
combination.
The Manual Sprinkler System is a sprinkler system where the release of water is controlled by
manually actuated switches or break glass stations. Upon actuation of these remote release stations,
the appropriate valves and pumps should automatically operate and water fills the piping system and
sprays through the sprinkler heads and thus fights fire at an early stage.
Each protected zone is served by a manual sprinkler system should have two (2) remote release
stations widely separated with one station in the manned control station and another outside the
protected space. The station should be suitably protected from unauthorized use.
The system employs one (1) number sprinkler pump with power supply from ship’s mains as main
source (main pump) and one (1) number sprinkler pump driven by a dedicated diesel engine as the
back-up source (back-up pump). The capacity of the sprinkler pump is sufficient for covering the most
demanding sections with a water application rate of not less than 5 l/min/m2. A complete computer
aided hydraulic calculation for each section served is done to determine the source duty and pressure
at the sprinkler pump.
The system is divided into 2 sections with control from the wheelhouse and remote release station
(just outside protected area). The section control valves, ‘CV1’ covering the upper deck and ‘CV2’
covering the main deck, is equipped with 24Vdc actuators. The section control valves can be seen on
the system layout drawing. The section control valves located at the Tank Void (S) shall open for the
respective zones upon actuation of the appropriate remote release stations. The section control valves
can be operated without any special tools or keys.
In case of fire, authorized personnel could actuate the remote release stations to automatically start
the system. On actuation, the section control valve is opened and the sprinkler pump started. Water
starts to flow through the respective control valve to the sprinkler heads. The indicators on the
sprinkler control panel would indicate position of the valve if open or close, and if the sprinkler pump
is in operation or not.
Test arrangement is provided at the farthest point for each respective section.
Water Supply
The water source for the sprinkler system will be supplied from the sprinkler pump. The sprinkler
pump sucks water directly from the sea through an independent sea chest via sea valve, strainer and
non-return valve. Pump arrangement can be seen on the system schematic drawings.

2. Description of Main Components
Sprinkler Heads
The sprinkler heads used are GW-S SSP quick response sprinkler, with a ‘K’ factor of 80. The sprinkler is
of 15mm BSP threaded. Water will only be discharged from the sprinkler heads once the surrounding
temperature reaches at approximately 68oC. The water will start to flow, hitting the deflector at the
bottom of the sprinkler head, which causes a shower of fine water droplets.
Sprinkler Pump
The main sprinkler pump used is Desmi S-100-80-220 / A09 at a capacity of 75m3/hr at 50 metre head
and equipped with 22kw, 2950rpm, 3-phase 415Vac 50Hz motor. The pump is constructed of cast iron
casing, aluminium bronze impeller, stainless steel shaft and mechanical seal. The sprinkler pump is fed
from the ship’s mains source. The switch is to be normally closed from the main source. The switches
on the main switchboard are to be clearly labelled and normally kept closed.
The back-up sprinkler pump used is Desmi S 100-80-220N / A09 at a capacity of 75m3/hr at 50 metre
head which is driven by a dedicated Hatz 2M41 aircool diesel engine rated at 24KW at 2950rpm. The
pump is constructed of cast iron casing, aluminium bronze impeller, stainless steel shaft and
mechanical seal.
The sprinkler pump could be started from the following locations:
1. From the remote release stations, just outside of the protected zone.
2. From the control panel at the wheelhouse.
3. From the sprinkler pump local starter panel, located in the Tank Void (S).
4. By using the manual cranking handle (back-up sprinkler pump).
Section Control Valves and Actuators (CV1 & CV2)
The section control valves used are motorized with electric actuator for 24Vdc operation.
The section control valves are provided in 80mm sizes constructed of cast steel body, stainless steel
disc and seat in Viton. The section control valves are provided with manual override handle attached
to the shaft. The output torque for the manual override handle is proportioned to the switching torque
thus making the handle operation easy. The control valve should be manually opened within 45
seconds with a torque not exceeding 45Nm under full pump flow conditions.
The actuators are constructed of die cast aluminium gear case and housing cover. The actuator is
operated at 24Vdc and comes with built-in limit switches.
The motorized section control valve could be opened from the following places:
1. From the remote release stations, just outside of the protected zone.
2. From the control panel at the wheelhouse.
3. Manual override operation, at the Tank Void (S), in case failure of electric actuator.

Pressure Gauges
The pressure gauge near the sprinkler pump indicates the water pressure after the pump is started. A
pressure transmitter with a display at the wheelhouse is provided to indicate the sprinkler main line
pressure. The gauges shall be of stainless steel construction.
All pressure gauges or pressure transmitter shall be fitted with 15mm shut-off ball valve for easy
maintenance purpose.
The Sprinkler Control Panel
The sprinkler control panel is constructed as per enclosed control diagrams. Please refer to
Engineering Drawings Section.

3. Testing
The Actuator at the Section Control Valve
The actuator operation must be tested EVERY MONTH.
The following procedure is recommended:
The ship’s officer who carries the test shall agree with the officer on duty on the wheelhouse about
the times at which the various tests must be started and in which order they are to be carried out to
avoid any unnecessary water damage during the test.
The testing of the actuators should be carried out from the control panel at the wheelhouse. The
manual override handle should be tested on the control valve itself.
At each completed open or close procedure of the section control valves, the person at the sprinkler
control panel in the wheelhouse should be able to see ‘GREEN’ indicator for open position and
‘GREEN’ indicator for close position, as soon as the actuator is operated.
At the Sprinkler Pumps
The start of the main sprinkler pump must be tested EVERY MONTH. Test of the pump is
recommended as follows:
1. Close the main shut-off valve (MV1).

2. Open the drain valve (DV1 – to overboard) in the Tank Void (S).
3. Start the main sprinkler pump from the sprinkler control panel and remote release stations.
4. You can start and stop the main sprinkler pump from the sprinkler pump local starter panel in
the Tank Void (S).
The start of the back-up sprinkler pump must be tested EVERY MONTH. Test of the pump is
recommended as follows:
1. Close the back-up shut-off valve (BV1).

2. Open the drain valve (DV1 – to overboard) in the Tank Void (S).
3. Start the back-up sprinkler pump from the sprinkler pump local starter panel in the LR Fuel
Void (S) and by ‘manual cranking’.
4. You can start and stop the back-up sprinkler pump from the sprinkler pump local starter panel
in the Tank Void (S).

4. Positioning of Valves
When using the Main Sprinkler Pump
Check that the positioning of the shut-off and control valves is correct.
The positions stated below being for the system ready for operation:
1. Sea Water Shut-Off Valve SV1, SV2 & SV3 OPEN

2. Main Shut-Off Valves MV1 OPEN
3. Backup Shut-Off Valve BV1 OPEN
4. Section Control Valve CV1 & CV2 (motorized) CLOSE
5. Drain Valve DV1, DV2 & DV3 CLOSE
6. Overboard Valve OV1 OPEN
7. Test Valve TV1, TV2 CLOSE
*All valves must immediately be reset after use to the above positions.
When using the Back-up Sprinkler Pump (in the event the Main Sprinkler Pump fails)
Check that the positioning of the shut-off and control valves is correct.
The positions stated below being for the system ready for operation:
1. Sea Water Shut-Off Valve SV1, SV2 & SV3 OPEN

2. Main Shut-Off Valve MV1 OPEN
3. Backup Shut-Off Valve BV1 OPEN

5. Maintenance
Sprinkler Heads
The sprinkler heads are not easily damaged. But if they are damaged, they are to be replaced using
the special spanner supplied.
Check that the sprinkler heads are not painted or the opening is not polluted.
Service Valves (SV1, SV2, SV3, MV1 & BV1), Drain Valve (DV1) &
Overboard Valve (OV1)
Give the handle of the Service Valves from time to time a few turns forward and backwards to secure
that the spindles are not stuck. Grease the spindles and adjust the seats, if necessary.
Section Control Valves (CV1 & CV2)
Examine the Section Control Valves from time to time for dirt on the flap.
Sprinkler Pumps
Examine the Sprinkler Pumps are grease in the ordinary way. Ensure the pump is provided with
mechanical sealing.

6. Operation Instructions
Alarm
In case of fire at the upper deck or main deck, which is protected by the Manual Sprinkler System, the
alarm buzzer in the wheelhouse fire alarm panel will sound immediately. If the alarm is not
acknowledged within 2 minutes, the alarm bells at the upper deck and main deck will sound. The Fire
Alarm Panel will indicate the exact location which is on fire.
Action in Case of Alarm
The officer on duty shall immediately send out men to localize the fire and find the cause of alarm. On
confirmation of fire, the officer actuates the remote release station either from the Wheelhouse or
just outside the protected space. The section control valves will open and the main sprinkler pump
starts automatically. The water rushes through the section control valve and reaches the sprinkler
heads. The water will only discharge through the sprinkler heads if the surrounding area temperature
reaches 68oC or above and extinguishes the fire.
In any case if the main sprinkler pump fails to deliver, the back-up sprinkler pump will start
automatically.
After Fire is extinguished
When the officer on duty is completely sure that the fire has been extinguished and not before, he
should follow the below mentioned steps to ensure that the system is ready again for firefighting:
1. Stop the pump involved in the firefighting.

2. Ensure the control valve of the affected section (CV1 or CV2) is opened.
3. Open the test valve of the affected section (TV1 or TV2) and open the back-up valve (BV3) for the
fresh water supply to clean the piping system. Close the back-up valve (BV3) once flushing
completed.
4. Open the drain valve of the affected section (DV1 or DV2). Connect compressed air supply in order
to purge the piping system.
5. Repeat procedures 3 & 4 for a couple of times until satisfactory.
6. Reset all the valves to the normal position as described in Section 4 – ‘Positioning of Valves’.
*Seawater must not remain in the main lines or in the piping system. The system must be drained,
flushed and cleaned with the fresh water then compressed air, every time the pump have been
working, owing to a fire or some other reasons.
False Alarm
False Alarm may occur, as the fire alarm panel system is not 100% secure. Trace the cause of the False
Alarm immediately and rectify the faults and note it in the logbook.

HMI Display (Operation)
Please refer to the following diagrams, which shows the HMI display in different operations.
1. The display shown is in normal condition.
2. To activate Zone 1 (Upper Deck), press ‘PRESS TO ACTIVATE’ under Zone 1 column. It also can
be activated from the manual call point located at the upper deck (protected area).

3. To activate Zone 2 (Main Deck), press ‘PRESS TO ACTIVATE’ under Zone 2 column. It also can
be activated from the manual call point located at the main deck (protected area).
4. To stop or isolate the sprinkler pump, press ‘STOP PUMP’.

5. To reset the system after activation, press ‘STOP PUMP’. Press the ‘RESET’ to reset the system.
6. To silence the buzzer (at the HMI display) and beacon sounders (at the protected areas), press
‘SILENCE’.

7. The diagram shows the status of the display panel upon Zone 1 Circuit Fault. This means that
the cable, from panel to the remote release station, is either open or short circuited.
8. The diagram shows the status of the display panel upon Zone 2 Circuit Fault. This means that
the cable, from panel to the remote release station, is either open or short circuited. The
diagram also shows ‘MAINS FAIL’ when the mains supply is not available.

9. The diagram shows the status of the display panel upon Zone 1 Valve Circuit Fault. This means
that the cable, from panel to the actuator valve, is either open or short circuited.
10. The diagram shows the status of the display panel upon Zone 2 Valve Circuit Fault. This means
that the cable, from panel to the actuator valve, is either open or short circuited.

11. The diagram shows the status of the display panel upon Zone 1 Discharge Failure. This means
that water did not reach the sprinkler heads (within 60 secs). It also shows ‘EMER FAIL’ when
emergency supply is not available.
12. The diagram shows electric-driven sprinkler pump trip, diesel-driven sprinkler pump failure and
earth fault.

7. Spare Tools
In accordance with the requirement of the authorities, spare tools box must always be complete. For
HSC High Speed Craft Code, the following must be provided:
1) Spare Parts Tool Box.

2) Spare Sprinkler Heads – five (5) numbers.
3) One (1) Special Spanner for Sprinkler Head.
