This thesis investigated students' perceptions of using debating techniques in an English speaking class at Universitas Katolik Indonesia Santu Paulus Ruteng. A questionnaire and interviews with 35 second-year students found that most students had positive responses to debating. They believed it improved their fluency, vocabulary, teamwork, questioning skills, and self-confidence. Students also said debating helped them pay attention, develop tolerance for others' opinions, and connect academic subjects to real life. Due to these advantages, students felt debating should be practiced regularly in speaking classes to improve their skills.

The aims of this research is investigating the students’ perceptions on
using debate technique on Speaking Course at English Language Education Program of UNIKA Santu Paulus Ruteng.
This research was a descriptive quatitative research dealing with the
students’ perceptions on using debate technique on speaking class at the second grade students at English Language Education Program of UNIKA Santu Paulus Ruteng. The subjects of this research were 35 students of English Language Education Program. To collect the data in this research, the researcher used questionnaire and interview. Questionnaire was used to know the students perceptions on using debate technique on speaking class. While, interview was used to know more information about the students perceptions on using debate technique. The results showed that most of the students had positive response on the use of debatie technique on speaking class. The majority of the students believed that debate technique brought some advantages for them, such as debate could improve their fluency like they were able to speak during the class. It was also helped them to enhance their vocabulary, developed their teamwork skill, enhance their questioning skill. All of the students were claimed that debate helped them to build their self-confidence and critical thinking. As well as students pay more attention during the class and developed their tolerance and recognition of their friends’ opinion. In addition, students believed that debate was not only a way to connect students with academic subjects but it could also connect the students to public life. Because of some advantages above, debate really need to be practiced in speaking classroom. It is appropriate for students to increase their speaking skill. Moreover, the students realized that the use of debate technique in speaking class was an appropriate technique to improve their speaking skill. Through debate teacher could provide opportunities for students to talk by using group work, and limiting teacher talk. Therefore, the teacher should keep encouraging the students to get involved during the process of learning in the class most of the time.
