THE GOSPEL OF REPENTANCE AND FAITH

Luke 15:11-32
Memory Verse: And saying, the time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent
ye, and believe the gospel. Mark 1:15.

INTRODUCTION
The word “gospel” means “good news” concerning Jesus Christ, the kingdom of God, and
salvation.
Repentance means to have a new mind, or change the way you think, to practically turn from
Satan to God, from evil ways to righteousness and obedience to God. When a person turns from
the ways of self and sin and PLACES his trust (Faith) in the Lord Jesus Christ thus making Jesus
the Lord of his life (Acts 26: 18).
What repentance is not?
It is not a sense of condensation
 It is not having a sense of regret because you are caught in the act of sin
 It is not confession without a corresponding change of mind and attitude (Luke 19: 1 – 4)
 It is not owning up only where you are confronted with proof of your sin
 It is not going before a priest to make confession (penance)
 It is not a work we do to merit (earn) salvation
 It is not a New Year resolution.
I. THE STORY OF THE LOST SON (Luke 15:11-320 The Father had two sons.
A. The rebellion of the younger son (15:11-16)
1. The Foolishness he exhibits (15:11-13).
a. In seeking his inheritance (15:11-13). The son demands his share of his father’s estate.
b. In squandering his inheritance (15:13). Soon he wastes all his money in wild living and
finds himself penniless in a foreign country.
2. The famine he endures (15;14-16). Eventually, he is forced to eat the food of the pigs he
is feeding.
B. The return of the young son (15:17-32)
1. The realization (15:17) He finally comes to his senses in regard to his terrible
circumstances.
2. The resolve (15:18-19)
a. To return (15:18a)
b. To repent (15:18b-19)
c. He goes back home believing that his father will accept him- faith in God through
our Lord Jesus Christ.
3. The reunion (15:20-21). The father greets his son with open arms
4. The rejoicing (15:22-24) The father plans a big celebration for the occasion.
5. The resentment (15:25-30) The older son is furious at the way his father has received
the younger son.
6. The reminder (15:31-32): The father explains his actions to his older son.
There is usually an awakening to God’s mercy to realize that a person must return to his
original destiny in God. Your entire attitude of mind changes. You have a new heart and
mind that God has given you, and your desire now is only for the good. Instead of
pursuing your old habits and interests, your interest is in the kingdom of heaven and you
seek the things which are above with Christ. (Colossians 3:1.) You no longer have to be a
slave to committing sin just because you are tempted. Through the power of the Holy
Spirit you can overcome the lusts and desires of your nature. (Romans 8:12)
