Solved Exercise – Solution

 Centrifugal Pump Capacity 46 m3/Hr (202.5 GPM)
 Diff Pressure 8.0 - 4.85 = 3.15 bar (45.7 psig)
 Fluid Sp. Gr 0.78
 Diff. Head 3.15 x 100 / 9.81/ 0.78 = 41.2 m (136 ft)
 Net Positive Suction Head available (NPSHA) 2.3 m (7.5 ft)
 Electric Supply Frequency 60 Hz
 Select Pump Model Goulds 3196
 As Pump Curves available for 50 Hz supply, the affinity law applied
to above parameters. Thus, revised values of capacity and head for
50 Hz (for selection only) are
 Capacity (50 Hz) 46 /1.2 = 38.3 m3/Hr (169 GPM)
 Head (50 Hz) 41.2 / 1.44 = 28.6 m (94 ft)
 NPSHA (50 Hz) ~2.3 / 1.44 = 1.6 m (5.2 ft)
 Select suitable Pump Model from Composite Curves (next slide)

Selected Goulds Pump Model 1 ½ x 3 - 6 showed operating point

above Max. Impeller Diameter. Hence selected 1 ½ x 3 - 8 or 2 x 3 - 6.
Model 1 ½ x 3 - 8 was to the right of BEP, and not preferred, hence
selected 2 x 3 - 6, whose Curve is copied as below:

From Curve, the

Impeller Diam. is
~148 mm, Shut Off
Head 30 m, End of
Curve Capacity 68
m3/Hr, Head 23 m
BEP Capacity
rated impeller is 56
m3/Hr, BEP Head
22m, NPSHR
~2.05 m
Compare NPSHR
to NPSHA
2.05 < 1.5 m
Hence model

As NPSHR is an issue, let us go to 1750 RPM pump (4 pole motor)
which will have low NPSHR. Hence from 1750 RPM composite Curve
as below, Pump Model selected is 1 ½ x 3 - 13:

5 of 51
5 of 11

Selected Pump Model 1 ½ x 3 -13 at 1750 RPM.

(Performance Curve available at 1450 RPM)
From the Curve, the
Impeller Diam. is ~326
mm, Shut Off Head 33
m, End of Curve
Capacity 63 m3/Hr,
Head 19.5 m
BEP Capacity rated
impeller is 48 m3/Hr,
BEP Head 25 m,
NPSHR ~0.7 m
Compare NPSHR to
NPSHA (1450 RPM)
0.7m < 1.5 m
NPSH Margin at 1750
RPM is 2.3 – 0.7 x 1.44
= 1.293 > 1 m
Hence model accepted
from NPSHR point 6 of 11

Selected Pump Model 1 ½ x 3 -13 at 1750 RPM (4 pole Motor)
for Rated Capacity 46 m3/Hr (202 GPM), Diff Head 41.2 m (135 ft)
Efficiency 58%, BKW = 46 x 41.2 x 0.78 / 367 / 0.58 = 6.9 KW
Shut Off Head (1750 RPM) 33.75 x1.44 = 48.6 m (160 ft),
Ratio Shut Off Head / Rated Head = 48.6/41.2 = 1.18 OK
BEP cap. rated impeller (1750 RPM) = 48 x1.2 = 57.6 m3/Hr (254 GPM)
Rated cap. / BEP capacity = 46 / 57.6 = 80%
BEP Head (1750 RPM) = 25 x 1.44 = 36 m (118 ft)
NPSHR ≈ 1.44 x 0.7 = 1 m ; NPSHR @ BEP 1.05 x 1.44 = 1.5 m (5 ft)
Specific Speed N √Q/H ¾ = 1750 x √ 254 / 118.75 = 779 (FPS units)
Suct. Sp. Speed N √Q/NPSHR ¾ =1750x√ 254 /5.75 = 8314 (FPS units)
Suction Nozzle size / ratings 3” 150# (Suction size > Discharge size)
Discharge Nozzle size / ratings 1 ½” 150#
Minimum Continuous Flow (Not marked in performance curves but
taken as at min. efficiency curve shown) @ 1750 RPM 15 x 1.2 = 18
m3/Hr (31% of BEP or 39% of rated flow)
BKW @ End of Curve 57.6 x36 x0.78 /367 / 0.60 = 7.4 KW (1750 RPM) 7 of 11

Pump Model Selected 1 ½ x 3 -13 at 1750 RPM (4 pole Motor)

for Capacity 46 m3/Hr (202 GPM), Diff Head 41.2 m (135 ft)
(Contd……..)
Nominal Impeller diam. 13”, Rated Impeller selected Diam. ~326 mm,
(Vendor will machine the impeller to required diameter.)
From Curves, Max. Imp. Diam. 330 mm, Min. Imp. Diam. 229 mm
Max Imp. Diam./ Rated Imp. Diam. = 330 / 326 = 101.2%
Some Client Specs may need 5% head increase allowed for selected
Impeller diameter and this ratio to be at least 102.5 %.
With that, this pump model also may not be acceptable and next higher
model 2 x 3 – 13 may have to be picked up and checked for all
parameters. (Next slide show Model 2 x3 – 13 is also not suitable from
NPSHR considerations.)
Thus, strictly speaking this Goulds 3196 Model does not have suitable
pump model for given duty fitting all parameters !!!
A pump selection 1 ½ x 3 – 13 is acceptable with deviations.

Selected Model 2 x 3 -13 at 1750 RPM.
(Performance Curve available at 1450 RPM)
From Curve, the
Impeller Diam. is ~303
mm, Shut Off Head 31
m, End of Curve
Capacity 86 m3/Hr,
EOC Head 21 m
BEP Capacity rated
impeller is 70 m3/Hr,
BEP Head 24.5 m,
NPSHR ~1.7 m
Compare NPSHR to
NPSHA (1450 RPM)
1.7m < 1.5 m
Hence model NOT
accepted from NPSHR
consideration

Please note there may be some discrepancy in values while reading from these curves. The 9 of 11
tolerance permitted by API 610 on these parameters more than covers for that variation.
