Electricity
When I was younger, I
would always wonder how
things were made and how
things work. My mom would
always scold me for trying to
use her stuff. She would always
say this line: “Nangangalikot ka
nanaman sa gamit ko”. At that
time, I was too eager to
try new things out, maybe
because internet was not a huge
thing before whereas now,
every home has its own Wi-fi
connection and children are
mostly curious about the online
world rather than the real one.
In this generation, information
is already at our fingertips
and I think people have become
less curious and eager to find
out about new and unusual
things. I am happy being able to
spend my childhood without the
internet and I think that
time was the peak stage of
my curiosity. Relating this to
the 3-hour video, isn’t it
fascinating to see how our
curiosity even at its littlest form
could revolutionize the world?
With the video, I was able to
realize how curiosity, courage
and unexpected luck and
accidents were the powerful
ingredients on how we live
our lives right now with easy
access to one of the greatest
discoveries, The Electricity.
Shock and Awe: The Story of
Electricity is a 3-part
documentary which focuses on
how electricity was discovered,
understood, used to build
inventions (such as the Battery,
Telegraph, Incandescent light
bulb, AC/DC, Mass Wireless
Communication and
Computer), used as foundation
(of Chemistry, Physics and
Modern Industry) and used as
a path in discovering
(Electromagnetism, power of
Crystals & Valves and
Superconductors). These were
all rooted form the discovery of
Electricity.
The Episode 1 entitled “Spark”
tells its audience how from a
single fascination on
the mysterious ethereal light
from an Hauksbee Machine was
able to open the doors to a
revolution which changed the
whole world. Not everyone
embraced that phenomenal light
and spark brought by the
machine but thankfully, a
group of magicians (called
the
Electricians) which were
fascinated with the light
explored its possibilities.
Other than
entertainment, they thought on
how they could control that
mysterious phenomenon. The

Electricity is one of natural phenomena that is built through the nature of science,
from about its simple as manifested by lightning to its complexity that are applied by different
pieces of discoveries that uses and need the power of electricity. In this story, Professor Jim Al-
Khalili narrated the enthralling story of our quest to master nature's of force - electricity. As back
on recently, it was seen as enigmatic things exist in our phenomena such as how lightning
works and what affects to a thing to make the presence of electricity. However, due to some
research study that support and explain this phenomenon as nature of science, we are now
enlightened and it capable to support the lifeblood of the modern world, especially highlighted
on every aspect of our technological advancements that reform our society to achieve the
betterment throughout the world. As of now, our perspective is without electricity, we would be
lost, everything that make our lives easier will never exist. This series tells of breathtaking leaps
of imagination and extraordinary experiments, with the great scientist mentioned that introduce
the use of electricity, its components, and equipment, which is seen as a significant contribution
to the needs of people in order to survive.
In the first episode, “Spark” is the main focal subject of the story, which considered
by 'natural philosophers' that started to unlock the mysteries of electricity, it was introduced by
Stephen Gray, Pieter Van Mushin Brook, Benjamin Franklin and others who contribute to the
first era that support electricity. They investigated its intriguing connection to life, devised
unusual, potent tools to produce it, and even domesticated lightning. These men laid the actual
cornerstones for today's society. Electricity was unquestionably a fantastical marvel. This is the
narrative of what happened when the first sincere, focused effort was made to comprehend
electricity; how we discovered ways to produce and store it before constructing a device that
allowed us to produce it whenever we wanted pertaining to the battery. Another concept that are
discussed was entitled as “The Age of Invention”, scientists made a significant discovery less
than hundred years ago: magnetism and electricity are two of nature's most fundamental forces,
Jim learns how harnessing the relationship between magnetism and electricity would
fundamentally alter the course of human history. It would enable us to produce an apparently
endless supply of electric power that we could use to power machines, transmit information
across continents, and illuminate our homes. In an astonishing century of discovery and
creativity, this is the tale of how scientists and engineers discovered the nature of electricity.
Lastly, “Revelation and Revolution” in which emphasis how energy connects people and places
around the world by way of networks and broadcasting, rather than just producing heat and
light. The final episode describes how a new era of genuine understanding began after millennia
of man's electrical experiments. It describes how we came to grasp electric fields and
electromagnetic waves. Nowadays, electricity is the hallmark of our time, it is increasingly
difficult for us to imagine life without it. Our reliance on it has grown along with our
understanding of it, and now we're on the verge of a new discovery because, if we can solve the
enigma, it can be thrilling, educational, and frightening all at once. Furthermore, we must always
bear in mind that solving mysteries must be done responsibly and just for beneficial purposes.
