Answer must be written in ENGLISH only.

There are EIGHT questions divided in TWO sections.

Condidate has to attempt FIVE questions in all.

Questions no. 1 and 5 are compulsory and out of the remaining THREE are to be attempted
choosing at least ONE question from each section.

The number of marks carried by a question / part is indicated against it.

Answers must be written in the medium authorized in the Admission Certificate which must be stated
clearly on the cover of this Question-cum-Answer (QCA) Booklet in the space provided. No marks
will be given for answers written in a medium other than the authorized one.

Wherever any assumptions are made for answering a question, they must be clearly indicated.
Diagrams / figures, wherever required, shall be drawn in the space provided for answering the
question itself.

Unless otherwise mentioned, symbols and notations carry their usual standard meanings. Attempt of

1. (a) Discuss the agencies responsible for deterioration of stones.

1. (b) A 2.5 m long and 30 mm thick tie bar is of tapered section. The longitudinal section
tapers from a depth of 60 mm to 180 mm at the ends as shown in figure. A load
of 54 kN acts through the centroid of the smaller end parallel to the top edge.
Determine the position and the magnitude of the maximum tensile stress.

1. (c) (i) A bar, 12 mm in diameter, is acted upon by an axial load of 20 kN. The
change in diameter is measured as 0.003 mm. Determine
(i) the Poisson’s ratio
(ii) the modulus of elasticity and the bulk modulus
The value of the modulus of rigidity is 80 GPa.

1. (c) (ii) A floor carries a load of 8 kN/m2 and is supported by joists that are 120 mm
wide and 240 mm deep over a span of 6 m. Determine the spacing (centre to
centre) of the joists if the maximum allowable bending stress is 10 MPa.

2. (a) (i) Three equidistant vertical rods, each of 20 mm diameter, support a load of 25
kN in the same plane as shown below. Initially, all the rods are adjusted to
share the load equally. Neglecting any chance of buckling, and taking Es =
205 GPa and Ec = 100 GPa, determine the final stresses when a further load
of 20 kN is added.

2. (c) (ii) A steel cable of 10 mm diameter is stretched across two poles 75 m apart. If
the central dip is 1 m at a temperature of 15°C calculate the stress intensity
in the cable. Also calculate the fall in temperature necessary to raise the
stress to 70 N/mm2. Take unit weight of steel  s = 78 kN/m3 and  = 12 ×
10–6/°C.

5. (b) Design a bearing plate for the beam consisting of a hot rolled section ISLB400@56.9
kg/m of structural steel of grade Fe410 resting on a pedestal of M20 concrete
placed over a 340 mm thick masonry wall. The factored reaction at the support is
300 kN. Assume that the bearing stiffeners are not to be used.

7. (c) A single unequal angle 100 × 75 × 6 is connected to a 10 mm thick gusset plate


at the ends with six 16 mm diameter bolts to transfer tension as shown in figure.

an 8% interest rate.

8. (b) Figure shows the midspan cross-section of a prestressed post-tensioned beam of 24
m span. There are 6 cables each of 12 wires of 5 mm diameter, and are stressed
with initial prestress of 1150 N/mm2. Assuming an affective prestress of 1000 N/
mm2 after all losses have taken place, compute the extreme fibre stresse in concrete.
The profile of cable is parabolic with zero eccentricity at the ends. The beam carries
a live load of 9 kN/m in addition to its own weight. Take unit weight of concrete
as 24 kN/m3.

8. (c) Design an I-section purlin for a workshop provided with pitched roof spported over
trusses of effective span of 14.5 m at spacing of 3.6 m. The pitch of the roof is 30°
and purlins over the trusses are paced 1.5 m centre to centre. The weight of roofing
material consisting of galvanised corrugated iron sheets along with fixtures is
