REFLECTION 1#

As I began my study into neglect of children after being abused, I was surprised to see how our
society handles this situation and how others perceive the incident. As I collected the data from
various sources, I found that I was developing more understanding about my topic, ‘Neglect of
abused children.’

My first article was an expository piece (NSPCC) which highlighted that the All types of abuse
and neglect leave lasting scars. Some of these scars might be physical, but emotional scarring has
long lasting effects. This article really showed the varying perceptions that individuals have
towards neglect for a child abused and even what we perceived to be ‘normal neglect’ A similar
theme was seen in the video ( UWI 2023) which revealed the feelings of high school girls being
hurt abused (Physically) and then neglected after by her family.

The Languague is a tool which can be used to inform or to give voice to human experience. In
the three pieces of data selected for my portfolio, the writers used language effectively to achieve
these purposes. In the first instance, the writer in the news article employed a range of devices
typical of this mode. The writer direct quotations from expert voices from both sides of the
ruling on Neglect of child abuse to present a balanced view of the issue. Through this section we
learnt about the sign, The warning signs that a child is being abused or neglected can vary
according to the type of abuse inflicted. Have frequent injuries or unexplained bruises, welts, or
cuts. Their injuries may appear to have a pattern such as marks from a hand or belt, Be always
watchful and “on alert,” as if waiting for something bad to happen, Wear inappropriate clothing
to cover up injuries, such as long-sleeved shirts on hot days.

Finally in ‘Neglection’ Angelou uses language to illustrate a woman who is being hurt and not
fitting into the expectations to society. She uses the voice of the persona to highlight the physical
traits of the woman.

My School-based assessment has made me a better person in many ways. Throughout doing my
SBA, I have learnt the value of teamwork and how to work together to accomplish our group’s
goals on child abuse. I have realized that it makes life easier by helping each other out in an area
we did not understand at first. This SBA also made me a better person by showing me that with
hard work come’s success and if I work harder I can achieve anything in life, therefore making
me a better person in today’s society.

PLAN OF INVESTIGATION
In order to complete my School Based Assessment for English A and B I decided to focus on the
topic, ‘Neglect in child abuse’ which was derived from my group’s overarching theme: Neglect.
I chose this topic because I was interested in finding out how our sense of abuse is shaped by our
ideas of neglect in society, due to the fact that our feelings of self-worth are often associated with
our behavior and how others view it. To complete my portfolio I will need to investigate and
analyse various sources of information so that I can present my overall findings. I will seek to
collect information from a range of print and electronic sources discussing child abuse. I
recognize that I will have to evaluate the credibility of my sources and to critically analyze my
text to ensure that the data are within my scope and that the conclusions I draw are valid.
