DIFFERENTIAL EQUATION

An equation relating a dependent variable to one or more

independent variables by means of its differential coefficients
with respect to the independent variables is called a
“differential equation”.
Two types of differential equations:
 Ordinary differential equations involving only one
independent variable and derivatives of the
dependent variable with respect to the independent
variable.
Linear Ordinary Differential Equations

 Partial differential equations which involve more

than one independent variable and partial
derivatives of the dependent variable with respect to
the independent variables.

Order and Degree of Differential Equation

 The order of a differential equation is the order of the highest
derivative appearing in the equation.

Homogeneous and Nonhomogeneous

Differential Equations

General and Particular Solution

 The degree of the derivative of the highest order present in a
differential equation is called the degree of the differential
equation.
Notation

Linear Ordinary Differential Equations

If y and its various derivatives y’, y’’, ... appear linearly in the
equation, it is a linear differential equation; otherwise, it is
nonlinear.

ELIMINATION OF ARBITRARY CONSTANT
Properties

 The order of differential equation is equal to the

number of arbitrary constants in the given relation.

 The differential equation is consistent with the

relation.

 The differential equation is free from arbitrary
