Factors affecting the Academic Performances of Students

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Shelton & Pedersen (2016) state that academic performance, which is used to define

the academic achievement of students in K–12 institutions, refers to the proportion of

marks earned by the students on each subject. Academic success is more concerned with

grades and percentages than with a student's actual. Moreover, research into students'

perceptions of the learning environment is advised (Khursheed & Baig, 2014).Additional

research is advised to examine students' opinions of the learning environment (Khursheed

& Baig, 2014). In light of the foregoing, the current study aimed to pinpoint the most

significant socio-economic and academic variables that had been overlooked in earlier

research.Performance serves as the link between the two groups and the academic

institution, as without students' performance, neither the teachers' nor the academic

institution's growth or accomplishments would be recorded (Gilbert, 2018).These factors,

which have a significant impact on students' academic performance, include

environmental, economic, social, and psychological ones, according to numerous

literature assessments (You, 2018).University is one of the places where a systematically

organized and scientifically oriented education is offered. It is through such an organized

manner that the knowledge, skill, and desired attitude of the learner develop (Akessa and

Dhufera, 2015).

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to identify what are the factors affecting student academic performances .

Specifically: this study seeks to answer the following questions

1.What is the socio-demographic profile of the respondents in terms of:

a. age

b. sex and;

c. family income

2.Is there a negative relationship between family stress and student academic

performance?

3.Is there a positive relationship between learning facilities and student performance?

4. Is there a positive relationship between communication and student performance?

5. there is a positive relationship between proper guidance and student performance?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study focused to the factors affecting the academic performances of BEED students.

College students. The students will be aware the possible outcome of affecting the

academic performance of BEED students.

students that affecting the academic performance of BEED Students especially they are

coping with their activities and requirements.

Parents. This study my help the parents to be aware the situation of their children. To

make them understand their children situion.

Researchers. This study may help and give understanding to find out what would be the

possible affect the academic performance of BEED students.

performance.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

This study focused on factors affecting academic performance of beed students . the

respondents of the this study are the 2nd year students of bachelor of elementary

education . the goal of this study is to address the challenges faced by the students in

academic performances of bachelor of elementary education students from the academic

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

In the research conducted by Arora, Nisha; Singh, Neetu (2017) entitled "Journal of

Educational Technology". Any student's academic success is the consequence of a

complex interaction of many different elements, including their study habits, personality

traits, and personal interests, as well as the teaching abilities of the relevant faculty. The

relative impact of these influences on students' academic success is examined in this

essay. The writers gathered information from 117 college and university students in

Gurugram. The authors have employed the factor analysis technique to investigate the

variables influencing students' academic performance. Also, they employed multiple

regression analysis (MRA) using a dummy variable for introducing the categorical

variable "gender" in order to evaluate the effects of these factors on academic grades. The

analysis' findings show the effectiveness of teachers' instruction, students' study habits,

and sources of distraction.

Institutions must be able to detect gaps in training and support for students by having

research-informed and evidence-based knowledge about the elements that affect students'

academic achievement. The necessity to identify and evaluate such characteristics at a

university where academic failure and dropout rates have been on the rise drove this

study. The primary research tool for the study, which used quantitative research

methodologies, was a survey sent to 397 first-year students from 13 fields and 7 faculties.

The underlying correlations between variables were found using multiple linear

regression and exploratory factor analysis (EFA). The research's findings indicate that

academic achievement is influenced by five main factors(Le,How Thu Thi et al 2020).

The growing volume of data in educational systems has made it difficult to predict

students' success. In line with this, there is still a lack of knowledge regarding the

variables influencing students' performance in higher education, particularly when

employing predictive data mining approaches. Typically, this area of study is known as

educational data mining. So, the primary goal of this study is to identify both the most

frequently investigated characteristics that affect students' performance as well as the

most frequently used data mining approaches to do so. In this study, 420 research

publications from 2009 to 2018 were assessed critically and analyzed using a systematic

literature review method on 36 of them (ABI Saa,Amjed; et al 2019-Dec).

Predicting the students' performance has become a challenging task due to the

increasing amount of data in educational systems. In keeping with this, identifying the

factors affecting the students' performance in higher education, especially by using

predictive data mining techniques, is still in short supply. This field of research is usually

identified as educational data mining. Hence, the main aim of this study is to identify the

most commonly studied factors that affect the students' performance, as well as, the most

common data mining techniques applied to identify these factors. In this study, 36

research articles out of a total of 420 from 2009 to 2018 were critically reviewed and

analyzed by applying a systematic literature review approach. The results showed that the

most common factors are grouped under four main categories, namely students' previous

grades and class performance, students' e-Learning activity, students' demographics, and

students' social information. Additionally, the results also indicated that the most

common data mining techniques used to predict and classify students' factors are decision

trees, Naïve Bayes classifiers, and artificial neural networks(Abu Saa, Amjed; Al-

Emran, Mostafa; Shaalan, Khaled 2019-Dec).

The study aimed to identify the factors and to demonstrate their effects on academic

achievement in various publications that utilized meta-analyses. For this purpose, the

meta-analyses publications on the Web of Science-All Database till 2018 were reviewed.

In the study, the systematic review method was adopted. Following a related review, 169

meta-analyses were included in the scope of the study. The effects of 254 variables on

academic achievement were investigated, and consequently, 427 effect sizes were found

in total. Variables obtained from meta-analyses with the effect sizes between -0.799 and

3.170 were examined in nine categories. The results revealed that the number of variables

evaluated in the categories of psychological, socio-economic, socio-demographic and

individual characteristics, learning theories and teaching strategies, and family was bigger

than other categories(Koçak, Ömer; Göksu, Idris; Göktas, Yüksel 2021).
