The Strength of the Nation Lies in the Well-Being of the Common Man
Nationalism is a form of loyalty and dedication to a nation, especially in the sense
of a national consciousness that promotes a country above other countries and
emphasizes the promotion of its culture and interests. Nationalism means a lot to
me. To me, nationalism does not mean that our country is perfect, it means that we
strive to be our best. For me, nationalism is doing anything that can improve the
lives of our country and to our fellow citizens. When you love something, you take
care of it, and you want to see it grow and prosper. These little ways of expressing
love for Philippines may not be as good as giving your life to the country, but love
is in the little things, right?
Patriotism is more than marching bands, armed forces and flag waving. Patriotism
is volunteering for a good cause whatever it may be for you and keeping your
community in a good shape. Patriotism means supporting and loving our country
even if it going through difficult times. The most important thing is you still love
your country, even if it like this not what you want. Patriotism is caring and ensuring
that you contribute a good part and create a history that could impact and inspire
others to do.
Nationalism has become a tool and touchstone for testing people’s patriotism. This
form of nationalism is sowing the seeds and throwing the country into trouble along
racial and religious lines. This type of nationalism that create hatred and hostility
between people can no longer a peaceful means and detrimental to state units.
Loving your own country does not mean that you should hate another country. This
misunderstanding has led to widespread war trafficking, not only affecting one
country in conflict but also in other parts of the world.
People should understand the difference between nationalism and patriotism, and
spread love and positive energy in the world. One thing we must remember is that
we are all humans before Spaniards or Americans. This term simply means seeking
the best interest of our country. This means knowing our country, knowing its ways
of eating, living, working suffering, fighting and surviving. All of these make a
country. Once we understand these things about the land in which we live, we
automatically feel proud to be part of its history and to belong to it.

1. Distinguish patriotism from nationalism?

Nationalism means to give more importance to unity by way of a cultural
background, including language and heritage. It implies to a person that his
country is the most superior among other countries and he will defend it no matter
what. Patriotism is a devotion to one’s country for no other reason than being a
citizen of that country. It is a common virtue that pertains to the love for a nation,
with more emphasis on values and beliefs.

2. Are Filipinos, who claimed Ferdinand Magellan to be a hero, considered as

nationalistic or patriotic?
Filipinos who claimed Ferdinand Magellan to be a hero is considered as patriotic.
For reason, they put emphasis to in the sense of attachment to homeland. This
attachment can be a combination of many different things like political and
historical aspects. Patriotism are positive values the country embraces and not
denigrating people of other nation or the nation itself.

3. Pres. Rodrigo Duterte states that he is willing to die for his country. Is his
statement an example of nationalism or patriotism? Justify your answer.
His statement is an example of patriotism. One who is patriotic will be ready to
make any sacrifice for his country. He will never live selfishly for himself alone.
A soldier for instance makes a supreme sacrifice of his life for the sake of his
country.

4. Americans feel that their country is the most superior among all countries across
the globe, is it example of nationalism or patriotism?
Example of nationalism. It implies Americans in their person that their country
is the most superior among other countries. It also carries a connotation of distrust
or disapproval of other countries, leading to the idea of global dominance and
that other country are rivals.

5. As students, please give 2 examples on how you can express your spirit of
nationalism and patriotism.
Love and help one another. That way, we are showing the world that we
are proud to be Filipinos. Stand united! Do something to help each other
and for the greater good for mother country. Love everyone and love our
country’s we love ourselves.
Being Filipinos, we should respect our Philippine flag and its purpose. The
history and the value of this flag are connected to the freedom we have
today. Encourage our fellowmen to participate and respect our flag and its
anthem and even our different symbols. They provide as our identity as a
Filipino or citizens of the beautiful Republic of the Philippines.

How Far We, Filipinos, Have Been Developing and Evolving

Long before the Spaniards and other foreigners landed or set foot in the Philippine
shores, our forefathers already had their own literature stamped in the history of our
race. Our ancient literature shows customs and traditions in everyday life as traced
in our folk stories, old plays and short stories. Our ancestors also had their own
alphabet which was different from that brought by the Spaniards. Why certain things
existed in their physical environment must have intrigued the ancient Filipinos as it
did other early peoples. In their effort to define their world, to account for the
realities in it, and to explain their feelings, beliefs, and judgement, they made up
interesting narratives. These have come down to us in the form of origin myths,
legends, fables, tales and supernatural, and humorous accounts. Song and verses
filled early religious practices to express devotion, to atone for sins, to minister to
the sick, and to bury the dead. Verses were composed also to pray for abundance and
happiness in the home, on the farm, on the sea and elsewhere.
Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan reached the Philippine and claimed the
archipelago for Spain in 1521, but stayed for only a few days. Christianity was
established in the Philippines after the arrival of the succeeding Spanish
expeditionary forces (the first led by Legazpi in the 16 th century) and the Spanish
Jesuits and in the 17th and 18th centuries by the conquistadores. Until Mexico
proclaimed independence from Spain in 1810 the islands were under the
administrative control of Spanish North America, and there was significant
migration between North America and the Philippines. This period was the era of
conversion to Roman Catholicism. A Spanish colonial social system was developed
with local government centered in Manila and with considerable clerical influence.
Spanish influence was the strongest in Luzon and the Central Philippines but less so
in Mindanao, save for certain coastal cities.
Through the history we can trace the way every Filipino has fighting for. We can
actually compare and see how far we have been developing and evolving. I believe
that every Filipinos have a characteristic, that is the reason why our culture and way
of living changes. In that way we can help and motivate young Filipinos’ the values
to appreciate the good things that the colonizers brought and teaches the early
Filipinos because what we have now was the history, they had brought to us we are
part of and appreciate the its beauty to live in.

Filipino I Am Proud For

My skin, my features are clear indication of my race

Running in my veins is the mixed blood of Chinese,
American and Spanish race as what history says
Spaniards, Americans, and Japanese colonized the Philippines for many, many years
We are happy that way – a complete blend of the east and West.

I am proud of being a Filipino, while we are hospitable,

To protect and fight for country are worthy-dying for
Good moral values and respectful most of all
Friendly to others, hardworking and responsible
With long patience lovable and strong yet gentle.

I am proud of being Filipino while we are poor, we help each other rich or poor
For those who needs on their struggle especially the neighbor
Filipinos are brave and pride they stand for
The same quality hides our pains and sufferings so as not to offend the offender
The culture and tradition from ancient till next generation.

I am proud to be Filipino, in blood and skin

The religion of Christianity in God we believe in
The own mothertongue we use and for grandchildren
We keep smiling, simple and low status of living
But heart and mind are rich human being.
Direction: Explain briefly and concisely whether you like each of following Filipino
culture or not using 3-5 sentences only.

1. Belief to superstitions
Truly speaking, I don’t believe in superstitions. These types of beliefs offer no
benefit at all. Superstitions beliefs can have a negative impact on the social well-
being of people and society because they are highly associated with financial risk
taking and gambling behaviors.

2. Having extended family ties

It rightly depends on the situation. In an extended family household the adults
can share their worries, stresses and responsibilities with other family members
like their parents, who genuinely care for their well-being. But negative effects
of extended family ties include a loss of privacy, disagreement in child-rearing
strategies, and grandparents continuing to parent their adult children, which can
include criticism that erodes the parent’s authority with their own children.

3. Too much hospitality

Too much hospitability creates hostility. From my perspective, showing too
much hospitality can make someone a victim of abuse. Sometimes being too
friendly with guests or strangers can make them depend on you. They can also
see you as an opportunity to out their burdens on you. Although it is not wrong
to be friendly or hospitality, we need to limit them and set boundaries.

4. Crab mentality
Crab mentality is not a healthy strategy foe long time well-being. Downplaying
or criticizing another person’s success doesn’t really lift you up. Crab mentality
can cause the people who have it to waste time doing things that don’t benefit
them. Crab mentality can amplify negative emotions, such as greed and jealousy,
among people who have it.
5. Ningas-Kugon
You won’t be able to finish everything on time. That Ningas-Kugon is. Ningas-
Kugon is the attitude when we start something with interest and enthusiasm, then
after a very short time, we lose interest and stop whatever it is we are doing. You
will always be cramming and might have unwanted results and unbearable
mistakes because of hurrying and become lazy or unreliable and people will see
these as a hindrance to connecting with you.
