Lesson 2: Roles of Technology for Teaching and Learning

Unit Learning Outcomes:


By the end of the session, the students must have:
1. identified the competency standards of ICT for teaching and learning in pre-
service teacher education,
2. unpacked the basic concepts of ICT to provide a common understanding for
teachers and learners, and
3. valued the use of ICT in the teaching and learning processes.

Lesson Outcomes:
By the end of the session, the students must have:
1. reviewed the basic concepts in ICT,
2. identified the roles of technology in teaching and learning, and
3. appreciated the value of technology in supporting student learning.

I. ACTIVATE

Go over the following concepts in ICT:

→ Technology – a mix process and product used in the application of


knowledge; modern and conventional
→ ICT Literacy – the use of digital technology, communication tools, and
network to access, manage, integrate, evaluate, create, and
communicate information in order to function in a knowledge society
→ Educational Technology – technology in teaching and learning
→ Digital Literacy – the ability to find, evaluate, utilize, share, and create
contents using information technologies and the internet
→ Flipped Classroom – utilizes a reverse instructional delivery where the
teacher is required to use the web resources as homework or out of
class activity as initial as initial instruction of the lesson which will be
discussed during classtime

II. ANALYZE

Roles of Technology for Teachers and Teaching and for Learners and Learning

According to Stosic (2015), educational technology has 3 domains:


1. Technology as a tutor – technology can support the teacher to teach
another person
2. Technology as a teaching tool – to facilitate and lighten the work of the
teacher; can never replace the teacher
3. Technology as a learning tool – makes learning easy and effective

A. For Teachers and Teaching


1. Technology provides enormous support to the teacher as the facilitator
of learning – passive to active classroom
2. Technology has modernized the teaching-learning environment – the
use of technology-driven resources
3. Technology improves teaching-learning process and ways of teaching –
incorporating technology in teaching methods and strategies
4. Technology opens new fields in educational researches – enhanced
testing and evaluation
5. Technology adds to the competence of teachers and inculcates
scientific outlook – use of internet for accuracy and speed
6. Technology supports teacher professional development – online
trainings

B. For Learners and Learning


1. Support learners to learn how to learn on their own
2. Technology enhances learners’ communication skills through social
interactions
3. Technology upgrades learners’ higher-order thinking skills: critical
thinking, problem solving and creativity

IV. APPLY

Performance Task (Group Work/Presentation)

Directions.
1. Form a group of 5 members.
2. Share what you have written in Task 1 and 2
3. Make a summary of all the members’ answers for Task 1 and 2.
4. Share the results to the class.
