As a result of those and subsequent conversations, the Commissioners have set aside funds in their 2011-2012 budget to help the Garden City Community Clinic grow its services to the community. This funding will provide for the addition of a half-time Nurse Practitioner, a half-time social services coordinator, and other support for clinic expansion. It will also help Garden City with its portion of new staff being added to the Volunteer Physicians Network to streamline specialty referrals.

This expansion of staff and service is huge for us, says Denise Ewing, the medical clinic manager and a registered nurse. We do a lot of care with minimal resources down here. With a paid provider being added on staff for the first time, it will smooth out a lot of the bumps we have because we rely so heavily on volunteers. The NP will not only treat patients directly, but work on improving chronic disease management, clinic process flow, and quality assurance measures. Ewing estimates

Barbara Mahr, Director
We are pleased to announce Dr David B Rice of Idaho Urologic Institute has recently accepted the position of volunteer Medical Director of VPN. Dr Rice will help VPN promote patient access to high quality specialty medical care. He will be working with our manager to recruit specialists in our community and provide medical expertise and triage leadership for referrals. WELCOME and THANK YOU to the following specialists who have joined our growing community, giving donated care to VPN eligible patients.
International Projects
Tracy Haworth, Director
The summer months at Genesis World Mission have been full of opportunities for all of our projects. Likewise, in Kenya, it certainly has not been the lazy days of summer. PEFA Mercy Medical Center (PMMC) in Ndumberi has announced the opening of their maternity ward (illustrated above). Now, mothers can come give birth in a quality health care center and stay overnight without having to travel into the outskirts of Nairobi for care. This clinic started just four years ago and is a bustling center of activity, hosting various medical missions teams, including our own just this month. We worked with the Kenyan staff for a day en route to Burangi, our second long-term project in Kenya. Our overnight train took us from Nairobi to Mombasa, followed by a half-day drive north along the coast and a canoe ride across the alligator infested river to Burangi. During this medical camp, over 1,700 patients were treated, 128 immunizations administered and 34 cervical cancer screenings completed. More importantly, we continued to strengthen our partnership with our friends in this community - an empowered community - who are ready to build a permanent clinic facility. The villagers have surpassed our wildest expectations with their own labor: hand dug water catchment ponds, road construction, and more. Now we intend to unite with them to begin building a medical home in the community, by and for the people of Burangi.
VISION SCREENING
Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation Partnership Typically, Garden City patients are referred through the Volunteer Physicians Network to receive vision screening. This is an essential part of managing diabetic patients. However, with an increasing number of patients referred, we worked together with the Lions to clear a backlog on August 5. The Lions brought their screening equipment to the clinic and in a 2 hour period, we were able to test 84 patients. Of those, 29% pass, 33% will be retested in November with their reading glasses, and the rest have been referred to the Lions for another test and free eyeglasses.

Through the generous support of Wells Fargo Foundation, a new referral management software package was implemented this summer, enabling more efficient processing and better tracking capabilities. VPN celebrated its Five Year Anniversary in June, reporting over $5,000,000 in donated care it has facilitated for patients in need by our partners in Ada and Canyon Counties.

HELP KEEP THE GARDEN CITY COMMUNITY CLINIC FINANCIALLY FIT THROUGH THE FALL
SEPTEMBER 21 4-6:30 PM
TOP SHELF BURGER COMPETITION LADY BIRD PARKGARDEN CITY
Join us for our second annual community BBQ where a dozen teams are pitted against each other to see who can create the best gourmet hamburger. This year well be holding the cookoff in a public park to draw more attendance from the community. We will also provide some basic health screenings and information on controlling blood pressure and cholesterol (while being quite aware of the juxtaposition!)
that with this grant, the clinic will be able to serve up to three times as many patients a year as they currently do. In connection with the Community Health Screening project and the Garden City grant, ISU is engaged in assessing program effectiveness by measuring participant outcomes. Rick Tivis is a biostatistician, and adjunct professor at ISU and also the Chairman of the Canyon County Community Clinic: Not only will we get to help Garden City Community Clinic with demonstrating how this funding will save taxpayers money, but the data is also going to help us improve the health screenings at ISU and services at my own clinic in Canyon County. Commissioner Ullman points out that county property taxpayers spent $9.1 million last year for indigent care, a constitutional responsibility shared with the State of Idaho. If we put more dollars into helping people take care of themselves and preventing them from getting sick or suffering complications from conditions like diabetes, were going to save county residents money in the long run, said Ullman.
INSPIRING HEALTH
This summers three fitness activities brought together more than 700 people and netting more nearly $16,000 for the Garden City Community Clinic. The Blue Cruise for Idaho Foundation for Health presented the Clinic with a $12,000 check after its ninth annual bike ride with more than 500 riders. The Garden City Chamber of Commerce held an excellent first year golf scramble attracting 80 golfers and numerous hole sponsors. It contributed $3100 to the clinic. Together with Canyon County Community Clinic, the Great CAN-ADAIAN Fun Run drew 50 runners with split proceeds of $1500.
The public is welcome to come sample burgers and vote on the Peoples Choice Award in in the baseball park directly across from Fred Meyer on Chinden. Admission is just $10 for adults, $5 for kids 12 and under. There are a few slots left for teams to compete in the cook off and the deadline for signup is September 7th.
