Purpose
.
1: This lesson aims to teach students that angles are everywhere. People
use them in real life, and this knowledge can help them do many daily
activities. For example, the time on a clock represents different angles;
skateboarders use degrees to do many tricks; I can cut my birthday cake
into different degrees; an alligator can open its mouth as small as an acute
angle, etc.
2: The purpose of teaching angels is to give students the idea angels are
essential because it helps us understand direction and position. For
example, carpenters use them to measure precisely to build closets, doors,
tables, and cities, tell time, and use the sun to understand why the days are
longer during the summer and shorter during the winter. A basketball
player uses it to gauge the distance he has to throw the ball to get it in the
hoop.
TIPS:
The purpose of this lesson is to teach students how they can find unknown
angles.
For ELL students, anchor charts and iPads will be used to assess their
understanding.
Use an anchor chart to show the differences of angles (acute, obtuse,
straight line and right angles.
Use prior skills of addition and subtraction to find the unknown angles
Students will master how to identify character personality traits to help
them make inferences and predictions.
I, We, You
I: The teacher will demonstrate how she calculates to solve the missing
angles. Then students and teacher will do a
Independent work: Students will work in pairs to find the unknown
angles and then work independently to gauge assessment. Low-level
learners will use kahootit.com.
Instruction INCLUDE:
A guided practice, the teacher will demonstrate difference instances of
how they can calculate the unknown angles using a cake cut into different
pieces.
Anticipated Difficulties: Some students may need to understand different
angle sizes, comprehend that they have the entire angle and need to use
subtraction to determine the missing angle.
