MOON PHASES

MOON PHASES

Make an infographic about the Phases of the

Moon. The infographic should include:
1. explanation of what causes the phases of the
moon.
2. description of the 8 phases of the moon.
3. Explanation of how the New Moon phase
differs from a Lunar Eclipse.
After you’ve finished it, upload it on the Padlet!
MOON PHASES

Reflect sunlight

Relative positions of the Earth, Sun and Moon change over time.
The Moon itself doesn’t have its own light source, so we see it
only because of the reflection of the Sun's light.
1/8

New Moon
A new moon occurs when the moon is
directly between the sun and the earth so
that the sunlit side is not facing the earth.
In this phase, the moon will appear to be
absent from the sky or too thin to be seen
with the naked eye.
2/8

Waxing Crescent
Waxing Crescent occurs after the New
Moon. During this phase, a small part of
the moon becomes visible in the sky. The
crescent looks like an inverted letter "C".
3/8

First Quarter
First quarter occurs when the moon is
right next to the earth, and the half of the
moon that is exposed to sunlight
becomes visible. During this phase, the
moon looks like a half circle.
4/8

Waxing Gibbous
Waxing Gibbous occurs after the first
quarter. In this phase, more than half of
the moon is visible in the sky, but it has
not yet reached full. The shape of the
moon in this phase looks like a larger
semicircle.
5/8

Full Moon
Full moon occurs when the moon is
directly on the other side of the earth
from the sun so that the entire sunlit part
of the moon is visible from the earth.
During this phase, the moon looks round
and full in the sky.
6/8

Waning Gibbous
Waning gibbous occurs after full moon.
In this phase, the moon starts to reduce
in size, but it is still more than half a circle
and looks smaller than the waxing
gibbous phase.
7/8

Third Quarter
The third quarter occurs when the moon
is right next to the earth, and the sunlit
half of the moon becomes visible again.
In this phase, the moon looks like a
semicircle again, but the visible side is
opposite to First Quarter.
8/8

Wanning Crescent
The falling crescent occurs after the third
quarter. In this phase, only a small part of
the moon is visible in the sky. The
crescent looks like a regular letter "C", the
opposite of the crescent in the Waxing
Crescent phase.
SEA TIDES
SEA TIDES
Tides are the movement of sea water caused by the Moon's
gravity on the Earth.

A rising tide occurs when water rises and moves to the farthest limit of the
shoreline. This event usually occurs in the middle of the day. Therefore, it is
not advisable to play on the beach at that time.

A low tide is when the water drops and moves away from the shoreline.
SEA TIDES

Spring tides occur when the moon enters the full moon and new moon phases.
This phenomenon occurs when the sun, earth, and moon are aligned or form
an angle of 180°. The spring tides phenomenon is characterized by a very high
rising tide. However, when the tide recedes it will be very low.
SEA TIDES

Tides occur when the moon is in its late half and early half phases. These
tides occur when the position of the sun, earth and moon are perpendicular to
each other (90°).

LUNAR ECLIPSE
LUNAR ECLIPSE

Lunar eclipse is a natural phenomenon that occurs when part or all of the
moon's surface is covered by the earth's shadow.
LUNAR ECLIPSE
Total lunar eclipse
A total lunar eclipse occurs when the entire shadow of the earth's umbra falls
over the moon, so that the sun, earth and moon are exactly on the same line.
Partial Lunar Eclipse
A partial lunar eclipse is also known as a partial lunar eclipse. A partial lunar
eclipse occurs when the earth does not completely block the moon from
sunlight. Part of the moon's surface is in the penumbra, so there is still some
sunlight reaching the moon's surface.
Penumbral lunar eclipse
A penumbral lunar eclipse occurs when the entire moon is in the penumbra. So
the moon can still be seen with a gloomy color.
