MOCK FINAL ASSESSMENT TEST (FAT) – JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2023

Programme LAW Semester Fall Semester 2022-23

Course Title BUSINESS STATISTICS Course code LAW1304
Time 2.5 Hours Maximum marks 100
Slot B+TB+TBB Date 31ST January 2023

ATTEMPT ALL THE QUESTIONS

SECTION A (4 X 16 = 64 Marks)

1. The two-way table below gives the thousands of commuters in

Massachusetts in 2015 by transportation method and one-way length of
commute.

60 or
Less 15-29 min 30-44 min 45-59 min more
than 15 minutes utes utes utes minutes Total

Private vehicle 636 908 590 257 256 2647

Public
Transportation 9 54 96 62 108 329
Other 115 70 23 7 7 222
Total 760 1032 709 326 371 3198

i. For the above data calculate marginal probabilities.

ii. For the above data calculate joint probabilities.
iii. For the above data calculate, the probability that a person who
travel by public transport, will take 15-29 minutes to commute.
iv. For the above data calculate the probability that a person who
commutes for less than 15 minutes, travels by private vehicle.

2. A study of past participants indicates that the mean length of time spent on
the program is 500 hours and that this normally distributed random
variable has a standard deviation of 100 hours.
a. What is the probability that a participant selected at random will
require more than 500 hours to complete the program?
b. What is the probability that a candidate selected at random will
take between 500 and 650 hours to complete the training program?
c. What is the probability that a candidate selected at random will
take more than 700 hours to complete the program?
d. Suppose the training-program director wants to know the
probability that a participant chosen at random would require
between 550 and 650 hours to complete the required work.
e. What is the probability that a candidate selected at random will
require fewer than 580 hours to complete the program?

3. The marital status distribution of men, aged 15 and above, is shown

below. From a sample of 400 men, aged 15 and above, the following
distribution was observed. At 0.05 level of significance, check if the
assumed distribution is correct. Critical value of chi-square, with 3 DF, at
0.05 level of significance = 7.81.

Marital Assumed frequency (%) Observation from a

Status sample of 400
Never 31.3 140
married
Married 56.1 238
Widowed 2.5 2
Divorced 10.1 20
Total 100 400

4. Given below is a table which contains responses from working women for
two variables, stress and life satisfaction. Working women have indicated
how stressed they feel and how satisfied they feel with life. Using this
data compute correlation.

SECTION B (4 X 9 = 36 Marks)
5. Number of students taking test at a test centre is given for the past 300
days as follows:

Number of students Number of days

10 150

20 100

30 25

40 25

Total 300

Create a probability distribution table.

Calculate the expected value of number of students taking the test in the
test centre.

6.
a) What is data and explain all the types of data. (3)
b) What is variable and explain the types of variable. (3)
c) Define population, census and sample (3)

7. Explain the steps in hypothesis testing and Define Confidence interval,

confidence level and significance level. (6 + 3 )

8.
a) A principal at a certain school claims that the students in his school are
above average intelligence. A random sample of thirty students IQ scores
have a mean score of 95. Is there sufficient evidence to support the
principal’s claim? Mean population IQ is 100 with standard deviation of
15 (4.5)

b) Blood glucose levels for obese patients have a mean of 100 with a
standard deviation of 15. A researcher thinks that a diet high in raw
cornstarch will have a positive or negative effect on blood glucose levels.
Sample of 30 patients have mean glucose level of 140. Test the
hypothesis that the raw cornstarch had an effect. (4.5)
