Question 1 (5 points). How many stages are there in a typical English lesson? Briefly describe
each of them.
There are 3 stages in a typical English lesson
The first stage is the presentation of an aspect of language in a context that students are familiar
with, much the same way that a swimming instructor would demonstrate a stroke outside the
pool to beginners.
The second stage is practice, where students will be given an activity that gives them plenty of
opportunities to practice the new aspect of language and become familiar with it whilst receiving
limited and appropriate assistance from the teacher. To continue with the analogy, the swimming
instructor allowing the children to rehearse the stroke in the pool whilst being close enough to
give any support required and plenty of encouragement.
The final stage is production where the students will use the language in context, in an activity
set up by the teacher who will be giving minimal assistance, like the swimming instructor
allowing his young charges to take their first few tentative strokes on their own.
Question 2 (5 points). Look at the lesson extracted from 10th grade English textbook on the
next page and:
1) Plan the “warm-up” stage. In your plan, specify the following points:
- Length of the activity
- Aim of the activity
- Steps
2) What kinds of language input would you introduce students in the “Presentation” stage?
Explain why.
Presentation provides the language input that gives students the foundation for their knowledge
of the language. Input comes from the instructor and from course textbooks. Language textbooks
designed for students in U.S. universities usually provide input only in the form of examples;
explanations and instructions are written in English. To increase the amount of input that
students receive in the target language, instructors should use it as much as possible for all
classroom communication purposes.
