It is designed to be used at the end of Year 9 (or at the start of Year 10) to assess students who are
low or middle attainers (for example, Pi or Theta learners if you are using Pearson’s KS3 Maths
Progress).
Progression Map
The Progression Maps are five-year frameworks, which show the curriculum broken down so that
you can see the specific skills and knowledge, which sit alongside the learning.
As a teacher, you can use the Maps to help with your planning, as well as to check how well students
understand what is being taught.

1. The first one is the Progression Scale which shows which step each progress descriptor (skill) is on, as
well as which strand (Number; Algebra; Geometry and measures; Ratio, proportion and rates of
change; Probability and Statistics) and topic (e.g. Accuracy and bounds, Calculations, Combinations
and so on) it belongs to.
2. The second one is the Progression Map, which shows the prerequisites needed for each progress
descriptor (so what learners need to know beforehand) as well as boosters that suggest where to go
next after a skill has been mastered and finally GCSE Edexcel Maths (9-1) specification references.
3. The third one is the Progression Summary, which is an abbreviated version of the Progression Scale,
highlighting what we believe are the key indicators of progress. It is intended for use as an easier
reference tool to check progress. Therefore, it does not list all content and skills required.

4. The last tab shows the progress descriptors organised by step so, for example, you can see what a
student on the fourth step should be able to do across the different strands.
Our Excel markbooks automatically calculate each student’s Step and where they are on each Step.
Getting started
Within the markbook for the Maths End of Year 9 Assessment Pack (3 Year KS3) Foundation GCSE
Baseline Test, there are three different sheets:
• Access to GCSE
• Foundation
• Higher
Please use the sheet that corresponds to the test you have used for your students.
Start by entering your students’ names into the first column of the Summary Sheet. This will then
automatically update all the sheets for the individual assessments.
Please note: if you need to reorder a sheet, please save your file before sorting, perform the sort
function and close without saving as sorting a worksheet does not feed through to the other areas of
the workbook and errors may occur as a result.
Recording data
Enter the marks for each question of each test within the appropriate worksheet. The Step achieved
is calculated and presented at the end of each assessment together with a Red, Amber, Green or
Gold to help determine progression through each Step (the Step RAGG). Red indicates that the
student is in the lowest quarter of the Step and gold represents the highest quarter of the Step. In
the Summary Sheet, an average mark for all assessments is given and the result for the last recorded
assessment.
A worksheet, called Step Boundaries, contains all the boundaries for all assessments within this pack
and is in the final tab along the bottom of the Excel workbook.
