SUCCESS CRITERIA

Pupils can:
a. identify who is for and who is against multi-tasking based on the text heard.
b. identify at least four true or false statements based on the text heard.

1. Play Make words with words or phrases for giving opinions, e.g. I totally agree! I don't agree! I'm not sure.
2. Distribute two sets of letter cards to each group.
Pre-lesson 3. Explain that you will say a phrase and the pupils have to spell it with the cards as quickly as possible.
4. The first group to form the phrase says Ready! and gets a point if they spell the phrase correctly.
5. Continue with other phrases.

6. Activity 1:
a. Vocabulary: Refer the pupils to the vocabulary panel at the top of the page.
b. Read out an example sentence for each word (page 142).
c. Elicit a definition for the words.
d. The children check the definitions in the dictionary on page 142.
e. Refer pupils to the photo of the boy. (Activity 1pg 113)
Lesson delivery
f. Read out the questions and elicit answers.
g. Encourage the pupils to give reasons for their answers.
7. Activity 2:
a. Elicit the meaning of debate.
b. Elicit or explain that multi-tasking is when someone does several activities at the same time (e.g.
texting and talking).
c. Write advantages and disadvantages on the board.
d. In groups pupils think of some advantages and disadvantages of multi-tasking.
e. Give them five minutes to do this, then write their answers on the board under the corresponding
heading (e.g. advantages: saves time, useful skill, stops you getting bored; disadvantages: may be
stressful, hard to concentrate, poor results).
f. Then, pupils discuss whether multi-tasking is the best way to work.
g. Conduct feedback with the class.
8. Activity 3:
a. Play Audio 2.15 for pupils to listen for the main idea. They decide who is for and who is against
multi-tasking. (Assessment)
b. Read out the sentences in Activity 3 and have the pupils underline key words.
c. Play the audio. The pupils listen and circle T or F. (Assessment)
d. Check answers as a class.
9. Activity 4:
a. Read out the two questions and elicit reason for each.
b. Play the audio again. The pupils listen and check.
10. Activity 5:
a. Remind pupils of their ideas in Activity 2 and elicit whether any of these were similar to what Maya
and James said.
b. Have the pupils work in pairs to discuss who they agree with more, Maya or James.
c. Ask volunteers to report what they discussed.
d. Have a class vote on who had a better argument, Maya or James.

11. Elicit from the pupils the importance of listening to other people's opinions.
12. Say We can learn new things and see things in a different way when we listen to other people's opinions.
Post lesson 13. Ask Should everyone have the same opinion about something? How can we show respect for someone
else's opinion?
