FORCE

What is force?
Force is the cause that changes or tends to change the state of rest or motion of a
body or changes the shape or size of an object.

Does a non-living object exert force? Yes, it does.

When we hold a book in our hand, it exerts a force on our hand.

Effects of force
1. A force produces motion in an object: when a force is applied on a body or
a stationary object, it may start moving or may change its place. Sometimes
the force applied is not enough to move a stationary object. For example, if
you push a truck single handedly, it will not move. In this case, the object
doesn’t move because the force applied by you is opposed by some other
forces like frictional force. The object will start moving only when the force
applied by you is greater than the opposing force.
2. A force stops the motion of an object: a moving object can be brought to a
state of rest when a force is applied in the opposite direction of motion.
Example, if we apply brakes to a moving bicycle, it stops.
3. A force can increase or decrease the speed of a moving object: If force is
applied in the direction of motion of the body, then the speed of the body
increases. And if force is applied in the direction opposite to the direction
of motion of the body, it decreases the speed of the body. Example, if you
push a moving bicycle from behind, its speed will increase. But if you push
from the front side of bicycle, its speed will decrease.
4. A force can change the direction of motion of an object: Example, a ball
changes the direction after striking the bat.
5. A force can change the shape and size of an object: example, shape of a
balloon changes on pressing. Shape and size of a spring changes on pulling.
6. Force has no effect on the mass of a body. Mass remains constant.
Type of forces

Contact force Non-contact force

Muscular Force Gravitational force
Mechanical force Electrostatic force
Frictional force Magnetic force

Contact Force
1. Muscular force: the force exerted by our muscles is called muscular force.
We use our muscular force to pull or push a trolley. We pull a spring with
our muscular force. A boy kicks a ball by his muscular force. Here the force
and the object (trolley, ball) are in contact with each other.
2. Mechanical force: the force exerted by a machine is called mechanical
force. For example, a car moves when it gets energy by burning petrol.
