IntroJuction
Empovver yourself through witchcraft. Seize responsi bility. Act
upon your desires to change your life and the world.

So long as your t houghts are pure and you mean no harm to

others, the spells in this book can help you to do just that.
Change the world. What t his book cannot su pply, however, is
the most important ingredient of all: you.

You are the on ly one who can provide t he imaginat ion, strong
wil l and belief to carry the spells off t he page and into the
cosrnos where they may begin to work their magic.

How Jo rnag;c sr<lls work~

Magical power surrounds us. It may be found in everything from
rocks and metal to wood, rai nwater and a gentle breeze. Plus
ourselves, of cou rse.

We cal l this energy the fifth element. essence or, put most
simply, Spirit. This Spirit is all povverful. It is t he basis of life itself.
It makes the planets spin, the t ide come irt, the sun rise and the
seasons come round agai n. It also affects our moods and inter-
actions - both with the world around us and between people.

If we can harness this povver and channel it, we can use it to

achieve great things . So r.ow do we do t~is? To begin with we
have to open our hearts and minds and acknowledge the Spirit.

6
I (

We do this by focusing our attention on tangible objec.t.s knovvn

to contain the Spirit. such as candle flames , pebbles and flovvers.

Other useful tools include coloured ribbons, crystals , rain1rvater

and personal items such as hair or nail cl ippings. All pretty basic
stuff, away from t he context of vvit chcraft . But in t he right setting
- a spell -- they act as a catalyst, ai!ovving us to channel specific
aspects of the Spirit.

This is achieved through help from God and Goddess. We

are all familiar, I'm sure, vvith the concept of God. In witchcraft
we have two Gods, one male, the other female. Hence God
and Goddess. Which is how it shou ld be. God and Goddess are
..
not imbued with human qualities like t he deities of Greek
rr1ythology, although v-Je do sometimes cali upon them , speak to
thern , as though they were almost human. Th is is more for our
benefit. to help us express our needs.

The best way to envisage God and Goddess is as two unique

energy sources. To aid v isualisat ion v,1e think of God as
represented by the Su n and Goddess as symbolised by the
rnoon .,God and Goddess aren't actually t he sun and the rnoon ,
of course. 13ut the sun and moon are part of then,. Understand
this concept and you are well on you r way to becoming a witch .

You also need to know about t he four elements: fire, earth,

v\1ater and air. Fire and earth are associated v,;;th the sun . Water
and air are connected wit h the moon. Everything living depends
on the e!e111-ents. Without t hem, nothing cou·ld survive . In fac.i ,
the world vvould not exist, since the elernents make up the very
fabric of our entire existence. The elements are the world .

Medit ate a moment on the significance of the four elements -

hovv they work together, their potential use to us - and you

begi n to understand thei r importance. And why, therefore,

witches hold them in such high esteem.

W itches realise t hat objects such as candles, stones, flowers and

rai n not only represent t he elements, t hey are of t he elements.
And each element contains the Spirit which is part of the w hole
Spi rit. Thus when cast ing a spel l, assuming it is cast well - which
requires thought, respect and a cast-iron belief in bu r abilities -
witches have the ent ire energy of the universe at t heir disposal.
And n'othing on earth comes more powerfu l than t hat.

Uphold the Witch 's law we must,

In purest love and earnest trust.
Please think before a spell's begun:
"If I harm no one, then no harm is done.
For what I do comes back to me,
Multiplied by the power of three."
If followed with your mind and heart,
We 'II merry meet and merry part.
If followed with your mind and heart
We 'll merry meet anon .

Castini a Circk
Casting a circle before a speH is an important ritual . This mental
and physica: preparat ion helps you to be focused and vvill have a
positive effect on your magic.

To this end. before casting, make sure you are unlikely to be

disturbed and if necessary give the room a quick tidy, to
minirnise chaotic influences.

Next lay out the tools and ingred;ents needed on the altar. This
should l:e from east to west, allowing you to face north.
Directions may be determined with a compass .

Hold your vvand out from your body, pointing northwards.

Visualise a vvhite light emanati ng from you r wand and vvalk
slowlyf n a clockvvise direction.

As yo1..: walk say:

"This circle is a positive field, a protective shield."

Walk the circle a second tirne, saying:

"This circle keeps me safe within, no harm can enter in."

\/Valk the circle a third time, saying:

9
"This circle will enhance my spell ensuring that I ca.st it well. "

Facing north, t race a pentacle (see page 12) in the air with your
wand . Do the same to the east, south and west.

To open a circle at t he end of a spel l, point your wand

northwards and walk the circle in an anti-clockwise direction,
saying:

"/ do not break this circle but the circle is undone.

The spell that I have cast it has begun.
M indful of the witch's rede
Now the magic has been freed
I will harm none.
Yet if harm's done
It shall return by the po11ver of three. "

Note t hat witches worki ng in the southern hemisphere

prefer to cast their ci rcle in an anti-clockwise direction and open
it clockwise.

out of the spells in this book - and a few others besides.

What shoulJ r w~ar~

Casting a spel l is a special occasion , so why not dress up? You
should keep an outfit specifically for v,1earing when working
your rr1agic. It doesn't have to be bought especially or
expensive. It shou ld be dean, not something you have been
wearing all day, and loose fitting - comfortable, in o~her
vvo rds.Don 't go fo r somet hing long and flowing vvith big
sleeves, since these can get in the v,ay, and when working with
candles could present a hazard . For the same reason , if you have
long hair, tie it back.

You \'Viii find t he right wand for you when you go looking for it.
Hazel is the best, although oak, rowan and apple may also be
used. So it is helpful if you look beneat h these trees. A twig might
have fallen naturally f rom the tree or be hanging off, waiting for
you to come along. If you don't know you r hazel from your app!e,
get your hands on a book that can he!p you to decipher the
various species.

What is a r~ntack?
It is a five-pointed star represent ing the four elements and the
Spirit. It should lie in the centre of you r altar for all spells unless
otherwise stated. Pentacles can be bought, but they can just as
easi ly be made.

Take a pair of compasses and draw a circle . Keeping the

compasses open at the same distance (i.e. that of the radius of
the circle) , place the point of the compasses on the perimeter
and make a mark to create a cross on the edge of the circle.
Put the compasses point in the middle of the cross and make
another mark. Continue to do this al l the way around the circle.

You will now have five crosses. With a ruler, draw a line to link
up every other cross. When completed you wi ll have a pentacle.

For spell use, you can make a pentacle out of stiff card or, if you
have access to the right equipment, from clay or wood .

What Jo r ne...u for an altar~

None of the spel ls in this book involves lighting fires. They are
unnecessary. Candles will provide all the power of t he fire
element needed for your magic.

Stand a puddi ng bovvl in a saucepan containing 5crn/2in of
water. Put the candle or candles in the bowl. vvhich shou ld be
reserved for th is purpose thereafter. Place over a rned ium heat
and the wax vvill melt.

Melted wax is hot. Do not put your fingers in it. and be very
careful vvhen carrying the bovvl, since you don't want to spill the
contents. Depending on room temperature plus t he size and
quality of the candles, the wax may be rnou lded vvhen it has
stood for about 20 minutes to half an hour. Stir with your wand
occasionally during this time. W hen you corne to rnould it, test it
tentatively to ensure there are no hidden pockets of hot vvax that
could burrf you.

It goes without saying that rnelting viax is an activity that should

be avoided when there are young children around. Accidents
can happen and an unfortunate youngster could be scarred for
life. Remember once again, 1f you harm no one no harm is done.

How Jo f Lum sai:e.~

If pickef fresh, dry the sage out for at least a day. Use a taper to
light it, then blovv gently to extinguish the flame . It should then
smoke for a fevv rr1inutes and go out of its own accord.

These instructions also apply when using a bunch of sage bound

in t~ rir:;ht colours~
Go and find them . Colour is important. Did you know that the
colours we can see with the naked eye - those of the rainbow -
form only a small part of t he entire colour spectrum? The reason
we can see rainbow colours is that our eyes have the abil ity to
read the frequencies . It's a bit like an AM radio. Any number of
radio shows may be broadcast in the vicinity, but an AM radio
can only pick up AM frequencies.

The "colour" frequencies that we can't see include X-rays -

beyond the violet end of the spectrum - and microwaves at the
other end. Radio waves occur further along the red end.

Make an effort to find the right ingredients. You might not fully
understand the principles of colour use in spells, but you'd
better believe that the Spirit does.

Here is a simplified table of the significance of colour as used in

this book:

Do I ~~ to join a cov~n to kco~ a

witch?
No. It is only since the middle of the last century that w itches
have opted to work in groups, called covens . But it has always
been, and most definitely still is, perfectly acceptable to work
alone. If you have contact with other young witches via the
Internet. you can work simu ltaneously to lend a spel l your
combined strength.

If you know of other aspiring young witches in your area, there

is no reason why you can't pool resources occasionally without
forming a formal coven. The witches sabbats provide a perfect
opportunity for you to get together - you will find more about
them on pages 86-94. After a rite, you can let your hair down
and party. There is a spell in this book to ensure that such a
gathering is successful (see page 60).

Open it before you move from the spot where the spell was cast.
The burial or hiding is actually an affirmation, for your benefit as
much as for the elements and the God and Goddess.

1 Wish no harm on others. Be aware that harm may be
caused unintent ionally. Observe this number one rule, and
the rest should fall into place.

2 Keep matches, oi ls, candies, etc in a safe place where

small hands can't get hold of them. Out of sight is not
enough. They should be stored out of reach.

3 Candles should be placed wel l avvay from curtains, plants,

papers or anything else 'Nhich might catch light. Never ever
leave candles burning unattended .
.
4 When out collecting material for your spells, take a friend
or responsible adult with you. Make sure your parents or
carer know where you are and at what time you expect to be
home. If you change your plans, call and tell them.

5 Never embark on a spell that requires bathing if you are

particularly frazzled and exhausted. Fal ling asleep in water is
highly dfngerous .
..
6 If a particular plant grov,1s in abundance it is probably okay
to pick a fe1,v flov.1ers for a spel l. But some species of wi ld
flowers are protected and should be ieft alone. If at all
possib!e, take plants frorn sustainable sources, such as your
own garden or houseplant col lection.

7 Essential oils should never be appl;ed directly to the skin

unless diluted in the correct proportion vvith a base oil. Oils
should never be ingested. Ensure the water used is vvarm
and do not allow the dish to burn dry. ,A.lways use a tea light

Most cultures have magical rites to control the weather. Th is one
is based on an Inuit practice, where the wind is called to the fire .
Once the air is contained within the two elements, of earth
(candle) and fire (flame), it is extinguished with the fourth -
water. This balance en sures minimal disruption to other
areas. But there will be some. For if you get your dry day (don 't
expect to create a heat wave) it will probably rain somewhere
else instead .

Taba is an Inuit expression meaning "It is enough. ··

full moon sr~ll

If you were able to fly around in space, you could view a full
moon every day. The moon herself never changes . It j ust
depends where she happens to be in relation to the sun and the
earth. It is our planet that casts the shadow to create a waxing or
waning rnoon.

So why should a full moon be any more irnportant than a

crescent moon? Well, in one sense it isn't. The moon is the
moon is the moon. Yet a full moon provides light. In the days
before electricity and street light ing, a full moon was an
important source of illumination. You could harvest and hunt by
it, so man and wornan 's survival depended on it.

But the practical benefits of a full moon in no way detract from

the importance of planetary positions. The gravitational pull of
the moon is highly influent ial, affecting everything: the weather,
the sea, plants and us - our bodies are, after all, made up of
90 per cent water. Many farmers understand that planting crops
around a full moon can help seed lings grow.

This same povver can be utilised to strengthen our magic. The

follo\-ving spell can help you tune in and harness th is energy. But
all the spells in this book rnay be enhanced w hen cast around a

Period pain - or cramps or dysmenorrhoea - can be so
disruptive. Low back ache, abdominal pain, nausea and possibly
faint ness make it difficult to get on with life.

Do you garden? A good witch should. A simple window box
or a few houseplants provide a good way of getting started,
instilling confidence before you move on to a flowerbed or
vegetable patch.

Find a simple text book that explains the basics. Really, it

doesn 't have to be complicated. Plants need water, sunlight, the
right-sized pot and nourishment. Precise requirements vary with
each species. Through careful observation, you wil l soon
recognise when a plant needs more water, less sunshine, etc.

Tend your plants wel l and you will be working in harmony w ith

Psychic kv~Zor~nt
Psychic abil ity means more than being able to see into the future
or know what someone is th inking. Really, it is about you being
in touch w ith the Spirit. This is a most important aspect of
witchcraft. It is what powers the spells.

This is why many spells require a degree of contemplation not

unlike the exercise below, the accepted basic meditation for
improving psychic awareness.

Psychic proficiency vvil l also be improved by the following

measures: exercise frequently, eat a healthy, balanced diet,
keep houseplants or take up gardening and get out into the
countryside as often as you can.

From time to time you can test your aptitude. Gradually you
should see a marked improvement on your score. To send a
message telepathically is as li1uch of a skill as receiving one. So
don't forget to take it in turns .

25 postcard-sized white cards • a black marker pen

• a friend

At sunset - outside if weather permits and you are likely to be

undisturbed - sit comfortably, with your back straight and your
hands resting, palms up, on your knees.

72
••

Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth until
you are relaxed and focused. Imagine a golden light emanating
from your solar plexus as you breathe in. Feel t hat this light 1s fu ll
of love.

On your in breaths, say to yourself: "Spirit."

On your out breaths, say: "Energy."

This should'take about 15-20 rninutes.

Then, to test psychic capabilities. choose five symbols, such as

two wavy parallel iines, a triangle, a square, a star and a cross .
Draw each image five tirnes so that you have one image on each
of your 25 cards .

Shuffle thern up and get a friend to study one symboi at a time.

As the}do this, draw whichever image comes into your mind.

Repeat w ith the whole deck.

By the law of averages you should get five right. Any more
correct answers may be attributed to a psychic connection.

Sabbats are celebrations , rites , festivals, that mark t he changing
seasons. The four greater sabbats are lmbolg, Beltane, Lughnasa
and Yule.

Some witches have very compl icated ceremonies that they

perform on these days. In the formal setting of an adult coven, rt
is thei r prerogative to celebrate as they see fit. But so long as you
give some thought. during the day, to the importance of the
date, it is enough just to celebrate the occasion with a t hemed
gathering of friends.

The one exception is lmbolg. a quiet private time, and one

of great importance in t he w itches' calendar because of its
associations with death and rebirth.

Also included here are ideas for M idsummer and Samhain (what
now tends to be cal led Halloween). These are known as t he
lesser sabbats, along with the Spring and Autumnal equinoxes
on 21 March and 21 September respectively. There are no
t raditional rites for these last two. They simply mark the quarter-

You may acknowledge the equ inoxes, if you wish , by renewing

Melt 375g/12oz butter. Stir in 450g/1Ib rolled oats and

At this point place one piece back in the oven and cook until it

The Beltane ritual can now commence.

Set the candles in their jars in a circle and light them using a

Holding hands, dance or skip around a circle . Then take it in
