You are the on ly one who can provide t he imaginat ion, strong

cosrnos where they may begin to work their magic.
We cal l this energy the fifth element. essence or, put most

It makes the planets spin, the t ide come irt, the sun rise and the
seasons come round agai n. It also affects our moods and inter-

What is a r~ntack?
It is a five-pointed star represent ing the four elements and the
Spirit. It should lie in the centre of you r altar for all spells unless
otherwise stated. Pentacles can be bought, but they can just as
easi ly be made.
You will now have five crosses. With a ruler, draw a line to link
up every other cross. When completed you wi ll have a pentacle.
For spell use, you can make a pentacle out of stiff card or, if you
have access to the right equipment, from clay or wood .

Most cultures have magical rites to control the weather. Th is one
is based on an Inuit practice, where the wind is called to the fire .
Once the air is contained within the two elements, of earth
(candle) and fire (flame), it is extinguished with the fourth -
water. This balance en sures minimal disruption to other
areas. But there will be some. For if you get your dry day (don 't
expect to create a heat wave) it will probably rain somewhere
else instead .
"Taba taba taba wind. Taba taba taba. Leave the storm you brew.
Come warm yourself by the fire. "
'
"Come in to the fire . Con1e in."
When you feel t hat t he wind has ansvvered your call, throw

Period pain - or cramps or dysmenorrhoea - can be so
disruptive. Low back ache, abdominal pain, nausea and possibly
faint ness make it difficult to get on with life.
If you suffer in extreme, tell you r doctor about it. in case there is
an underlying medical condition that needs attention. But in
most cases, period pain is simply the result of being a young
woman - nothing we can do about that, sorry! But anxiety
and stress certain ly exacerbate the problem. This we can do
something about.
There is no need to cast a circle for this folk spell. But you may

your right. Breathe in through your nose and out through your

breathe out, feel a greater power leaving, taking t he fire with it.
You shou ld feel a tingle as the energies bu ild up and up until it
seems that your breathing controls the wind, t he ripples on the
lake, the movement of the trees.

Sabbats are celebrations , rites , festivals, that mark t he changing
seasons. The four greater sabbats are lmbolg, Beltane, Lughnasa
and Yule.
Also included here are ideas for M idsummer and Samhain (what
now tends to be cal led Halloween). These are known as t he
lesser sabbats, along with the Spring and Autumnal equinoxes
on 21 March and 21 September respectively. There are no
t raditional rites for these last two. They simply mark the quarter-
years between the Summer Solstice (Midsummer) and Winter
Solstice, or Yule.

A celebration of light and the com ing of spring, lmbolg
marks the end of winter, a t ime when life begins to stir in the
previously barren earth.
Light the candles, t hen sprinkle the oats on the floor. Take up
your wartd, saying: "From darkness comes light. From night
comes day From winter and death come spring and Iife. "
Set t he wand dow n, put on t he crown and the shawl, then take
up the flowers. sayi ng: "Girl in the moon, see off the darkness
and let the light in."

Ikltarx - 30 Afril
A celebration of summer's beginning. This ritual should take
place outside - preferably on a hill - before sunset.
At this point place one piece back in the oven and cook until it
blackens around the edges. When it has cooled, put it in the bag
w ith the other flapjacks.
Set the candles in their jars in a circle and light them using a
taper - the best way to ensure you don't burn your fingers.

When you have all had a go, sit down and pass round the bag,
each of you taking a piece of flapjack. Whoever gets the burned
piece has to jump three t imes over the candles while the person
who made t he flapjack throws the egg at them. If the cook gets
the burned piece, the person on their left gets to throw the egg.
Please note, use cold water to wash egg out of your hair.
Otherwisa you will be picking bits of scrambled egg off your
head for days after.

The Sun God is at his zenith. The longest day and shortest night.
Another perfect excuse for a party. If weather, circumstances
and grown-ups permit, hold it outdoors.
Near the door, have a bowl ready containing water and floating
rose petals. Dip a sprig of heather into the water and, as you
greet your friends, use it to sprinkle thern.
If you can, stay up all night and greet the waning year with t he
Sunrise Spell (see page 37). At dawn you might also bathe your
face in the morning dew. This is purported to be good for
improving t he complexion.

Lu5hnasa - 31 July
The end of summer, the beginning of autumn. We honour the
haNest with a picnic and a good stiff walk up a mountain . Or a
big hill with a good view of the su rrounding area.
Eat them w ith cream and sugar when you get to the highest
point. Then dance off the calories. Your picnic should also
include apples and soft white rolls.

Jarnhain - 31 Octokr
What a coincidence. This ancient rite falls on t he same night as
Halloween, the most Pagan, along w ith Christmas, of al l the
t raditional Christian holidays. It is also the nearest thing we have
to a national witch day.
Have bowls of nuts and fruits available for your friends and for
anyone who comes t rick or treating.
93
The shortest day and the longest night. The wheel has turned,
the days begin to lengthen.
This is the time when the Sun King is reborn , protected by the -
Mother Goddess. Decorate a tree in their honour.
Don 't opt for shop-bought seasonal baubles. Create your own.
Red ·ribbons may be tied in bows. You can make stars, spirals and
moons out of shortcrust pastry: bake them and paint them gold
and silver Shells and bells may be strung together and strewn
across the branches. You don't need to cut a tree down for this .
You could deck out a handsome specimen in you r garden.
