Introduction

1. Each chapter contains sections explaining the purpose of specific functions and the relationship between electrical and
mechanical systems with reference to the timing of operation.
In the diagrams, represents the path of mechanical drive; where a signal name accompanies the symbol, the arrow
indicates the direction of the electric signal.
The expression "turn on the power" means flipping on the power switch, closing the front door, and closing the delivery unit
door, which results in supplying the machine with power.
2. In the digital circuits, '1' is used to indicate that the voltage level of a given signal is "High", while '0' is used to indicate "Low".
(The voltage value, however, differs from circuit to circuit.) In addition, the asterisk (*) as in "DRMD*" indicates that the DRMD
signal goes on when '0'.
In practically all cases, the internal mechanisms of a microprocessor cannot be checked in the field. Therefore, the operations
of the microprocessors used in the machines are not discussed: they are explained in terms of from sensors to the input of
the DC controller PCB and from the output of the DC controller PCB to the loads.
The descriptions in this Service Manual are subject to change without notice for product improvement or other purposes, and
major changes will be communicated in the form of Service Information bulletins.
All service persons are expected to have a good understanding of the contents of this Service Manual and all relevant Service
Information bulletins and be able to identify and isolate faults in the machine.

Basic Operation

Basic Operation of the Fore-edge Trimmer

The fore-edge trimmer receives a booklet which has been stitched and folded by the host machine, trims it on its fore-edge or
passes it thorough without trimming, and delivers it to the conveyor.
The basic operation of the fore-edge trimmer is as follows:

■ When doing fore-edge trimming:

1. The fore-edge trimmer receives the size information from the host machine.
2. Based on the size information, the top-bottom guides and stopper move to the setting positions and the stopper rises. The
trim width depends on the stopper position.
3. Once the booklet is fed into the fore-edge trimmer, it is jogged on its top and bottom edges in the infeed section, and then
fed to the trim section through the transport section.
4. Once the booklet is fed into the trim section, it stops at the stopper. The upper knife moves down and up to trim the booklet
on its fore-edge. After that, the stopper lowers and the booklet is delivered to the conveyor.

■ When passing through without trimming:

1. The fore-edge trimmer receives the size information from the host machine.
2. Based on the size information, the top-bottom guides and stopper move to the setting positions.
3. Once the booklet is fed into the fore-edge trimmer, it is jogged on its top and bottom edges in the infeed section, and then
fed to the trim section through the transport section. The stopper lowers in the specified time after the booklet was transported
from the infeed section.
4. The booklet passes through the trim section, and it is delivered to the conveyor.
5. The operation of the fore-edge trimmer is controlled by the trimmer controller PCB QPM-324. The QPM-324 follows the
commands from the host machine.

Communication Between the Host Machine and the Fore-edge

Trimmer
The control commands from the host machine enter the trimmer controller PCB QPM-324. This function uses a serial

■ Control
When the fore-edge trimmer power turns on following a command from the host machine, the power is supplied to the fore-edge
trimmer. After this, the fore-edge trimmer goes to an idling run mode. If any booklet has been left inside, the trimmer sends the
jam information to the host machine.

■ Main Control
The fore-edge trimmer operation sequence is controlled by the trimmer controller PCB QPM-324. The QPM-324 controls the
motors through the stepper motor driver QPW-973, the main transport motor driver A04, the trim motor driver A05.

When the top cover (SW01), front cover (SW02) or slide cover (SW03) is opened, the interlock circuit (K01 and K02) opens and
shuts off the power to the drivers, and this stops all of the motors.

■ Service Maintenance Panel Control

The LCD display is controlled by the trimmer controller PCB QPM-324. They are also supplied with power from the QPM-324.
When one of the buttons on the input button PCB QPW-732 is pressed, its input signal is sent to the QPM-324.
The following are performed on the service maintenance panel:
• Calibrating the home position for top-bottom guide and the stopper
• Single operation of each part
• Input signal monitor of each sensor
See “Adjustments on the Service Mode” on page 95 for details.

Fore-edge Trim Operation

Preparation Stage Control

When the fore-edge trimmer receives the operation startup command from the host machine, the following parts return to their
home positions.

Home Positions
Infeed section: Top-bottom guides (to outside), transport hooks (to the right)
Trim section: Stopper (to the left)

Next, when the fore-edge trimmer receives the booklet information (size, thickness, trim direction) from the host machine, the
guides and stoppers move as follows:
Infeed section: Top-bottom guide set at top-bottom size+ 20mm or 0.79", transport hook (remains at home position)
Trim section: Stopper (at trimmed fore-edge size)

Infeed Section Control

The fore-edge trimmer runs the infeed belts (M01) just before the booklet is delivered from the finisher. The booklet is transported
until the infeed section booklet sensor (PI01) detects the booklet.
The top-bottom guides jog the booklet and they move outward. They should be wider than the top to bottom dimension of the
booklet by + 2 mm (0.08") in order to transport the booklet smoothly.
Next, the main transport belts (M04), and transport hooks (M02) run and transport the booklet.
When the transport hooks (M02) reaches to the stroke end, the transport hooks move to the home positions, and the top-bottom
guides open 20 mm (0.79") wider than the top to bottom dimension for the next booklet.

Transport Section Control

The booklet passes the vertical transport section booklet sensors (PI10 and PI07) and the booklet is transported to the trim section.

13
2. Technical Explanation

Trim Section Control

The trim section transport belts (M10) stop in 0.1 second after the booklet is detected by the stopper booklet sensor (PI08), and
the knife trims the booklet (M05). When the upper knife (M05) reached to the lower limit, the stopper (M07) lowers. The trim
section transport belts (M10) starts driving after 0.8 second from reaching the knife to the lower limit. When the booklet passes
through the trim section, the trim section transport belts (M10) stop. The upper knife stops when it is detected by the upper knife
upper limit sensor (PI06).

Conveyor Section Control

When the trimming motion starts, the conveyor belts (M107) drive in reverse.
In case that there is a booklet on the conveyor,
The conveyor belts (M107) stop in the specified time after the booklet on the conveyor comes back to the conveyor sensor 1
(PS117).
In case that there is no booklet on the conveyor,
The conveyor belts (M107) stop in the specified time.

Pass Through Operation (Without Trimming)

Preparation Stage Control

When the fore-edge trimmer receives the operation startup command from the host machine, the following parts return to their
home positions.

The stopper lowers in the specified
time after the booklet comes into the transport section.

15
2. Technical Explanation

Trim Section Control

The booklet passes the stopper booklet sensor (PI08).

Conveyor Section Control

The conveyor belts (M107) drive in reverse in the specified time after the booklet is transported to the oblique transport section.
When the head of delivered booklet is overlapped on the tail of the previous booklet, the conveyor belts (M107) drives in the
normal direction.
The conveyor belts (M107) stop in the specified time after the booklet passes the conveyor sensor 1 (PI117).

Stop Control
When the last booklet is delivered on the conveyor, the fore-edge trimmer runs idly to check if any booklet has been left inside.
And it stops.

2. Technical Explanation

Detecting Jams
In order to detect a booklet being moved or a booklet left in the machine, the following booklet sensors are installed:

Infeed section
• Infeed section booklet sensor (PI01)

Transport section
• Vertical transport section entrance booklet sensor (PI10)
• Vertical transport section exit booklet sensor (PI07)

Trim section
• Stopper booklet sensor (PI08)

Conveyor section
• Sub tray sensor (PS112)
In case that the sub tray is pulled out, it sends the "full" signal to the host machine when the specific number of booklets are
piled after this sensor detects a booklet.

The trimmer controller PCB QPM-324 judges a jam if the booklet is detected by each sensor at the incorrect timing. When the
trimmer controller PCB QPM-324 judges a jam, the fore-edge trimmer stops running and sends the jam information to the host
machine.
After the jammed booklet is cleared and all the covers are closed, the fore-edge trimmer goes to an idling run mode and checks
to see whether the sensors still detect the booklet. If the sensors do not detect any booklet, the fore-edge trimmer judges this as
a complete recovery and sends the revised jam information to the host machine.
