1. A Lancashire boiler generates 2400Kg of dry steam per hour at a
pressure of 11 bar. The grate area is 3m2 and 90Kg of coal is burnt per m2 of grate area per hour. The calorific value of the coal is 33180KJ/Kg and the temperature of feed water is 17°C, determine: (i) Actual evaporation per Kg of coal (ii) equivalent evaporation ‘from and at 100°C’ and (iii) efficiency of the boiler at 17.5°C, hf=73.4KJ/Kg. 4B 2. A Pelton wheel is working under a head of 250m running at 360rpm and overall efficiency of the wheel is 80% and ratio of jet to the wheel is 1/10. Calculate (i) Diameter of jet (ii) width of the buckets and (iii) Depth of products. 4B 3. In an Otto cycle the temperature at the beginning and end of the isentropic compression are 316K and 596K respectively. Determine the air standard efficiency and the compression ratio. Take γ=1.4. 4B 4. In an air standard Otto cycle, the compression ratio is 7 and compression begins at 1 bar and 310K. The heat added is 2500KJ/Kg. Find (i) maximum temperature and pressure of the cycle (ii) work done per kg of air (iii) cycle efficiency and (iv) mean effective pressure. Take air Cv = 0.73KJ/Kg.K and R = 287 J/Kg.K. 3B 5. A simple closed cycle gas turbine plant receives air at 1 bar and 15°C, and compressions it to 5 bar and then heats it to 800°C in the heating chamber. The hot air expands in a turbine back to 1 bar. Calculate the power developed per kg of air supplied per second. Take Cp for the air as 1KJ/Kg.K. 4B 6. A centrifugal pump is to discharge water at the rate of 110 liters/second at a speed of 140rpm against a head of 30 meters. The impeller diameter is 250mm and its width 50mm. If the manometric efficiency is 70%, determine the value angle at the outer periphery. 4B 7. A centrifugal pump delivers 50 liters of water per second against a total head of 24 meters running at 1500rpm. The velocity of flows is maintained constant 2.4 m/s and the blades are curved back at 30° to tangent at exit. The inner diameter is half of the outer diameter. If the manometer efficiency is 80%, find (i) blade angle at inlet and (ii) power required to drive the pump. 3B Prepared By: Hasan Bin Firoz (533) Mechanical Engineering Fundamentals (ME-401) 8. An inward flow reaction turbine is supplied water at the rate of 600 liters/second with a velocity of flow 6m/s. The velocity of periphery and velocity of whirl at inlet is 24 m/s and 18 m/s respectively. Assuming the discharge to be radial at outlet and the velocity of flow to be constant, find (i) vane angle at inlet (ii) head of water on the wheel. 4B 9. In a regenerative cycle, having one feed water heater, the dry saturated steam is supplied from the boiler at a pressure of 30 bar and condenser pressure is 1 bar. The steam is bled at a pressure of 5 bar. Determine the amount of bled steam per kg of steam supplied and the efficiency of cycle, what would be the efficiency without regenerative feed heating. Also determine the percentage increase in efficiency due to regeneration. 3B
