Silent Auction/Mixer Sure To Please At August Chapter Meeting In Thomaston

By Bethany Lucas

The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International Psi State

The August 15th Beta Gamma meeting in Thomaston will be a fantastic way to shop and mingle with our DKG sisters. The program for this meeting will feature a mixer and a silent auction, as well as a discussion of potential members to be initiated at our October meeting. Last years silent auction was such a success that we have decided to make it an annual event. The theme for the silent auction is useful and unique. We are asking that members donate at least one new or slightly used item that is useful and/or unique. Share your talents and gifts by donating something that you have grown, painted, cooked, sewn, written, or made. If you have vacation property that you can donate for a weekend, we would love to bid on it! Other donation ideas are themed gift baskets, catering, babysitting, home dcor, home organizing or home improvement services, sports or celebrity memorabilia, entertainment, etc. Proceeds from the silent auction will go to our own Beta Gamma treasury. Since Beta Gamma will initiate new members in October, an important step must be completed. Please go to the Delta Kappa Gamma website http://www.deltakappagamma.net/ and click

on the Society Forms/Application link. Scroll down to General Society Forms and click on Recommendation for Invitation to Membership - Form 11. This will give you the PDF to complete for potential initiates. Be sure to discuss potential members with your group, fill out the form for each, and have someone designated to discuss each recommendation to our entire group at the August meeting. This is a necessary step in the initiation process. The program will be followed by the business meeting and a wonderful lunch of chicken salad, congealed salad, fruit, and homemade dessert served by our wonderful Thomaston group. The cost of the lunch will be $10.00. Please make plans to join us in the Fellowship Hall on the lower level at the First Presbyterian Church, 403 Birdsong Street, Thomaston, GA 30286. Coming from the west on GA Hwy 74, turn right at the Upson Hospital. The church is behind the hospital up on the hill. There is some parking downstairs, but others can park upstairs and walk the ramp sidewalk to the fellowship hall. The silent auction begins at 10:30.

Donations For Projects To Be Collected In August

Beta Gamma Chapter is continuing its projects of providing childrens books for DFACS or a similar service agency and of supplying a nursing home or senior citizens center with Bingo prizes. These items will be distributed in the Thomaston area. School supplies will also be collected for distribution to Good Shepherd at this meeting, as well. Collection boxes will be located near the sign-in table at our August meeting. You will want to be part of these worthwhile projects. Please be sure to mark your calendar with a reminder to bring donations!

Reminder For Members

The summer of 2009 is fast drawing to a close, and our first DKG meeting of the year is approaching very quickly. Bethany Lucas, our wonderful program chair, is planning a meeting that is sure to be a winner! We will be participating in a silent aution during this meeting, instead of our October meeting, due to initiation of new members to be held in Greenville in October. The silent auction that we had in 2008 was an awesome way to pump-up our treasury, and it was also lots of fun! A mixer is also planned, which will be great fun and a wonderful way to kick off our new year. Our Psi State President, Jo Davis, has challenged us to be sure that our chapter is Growing Our Vision. Our Mission. This is our theme for the 2009-2011 biennium. As President Jo states, We must choose to grow in Delta Kappa Gamma. We must choose to go beyond the chapter. We must choose to accept leadership positions. This is advice that Beta Gamma chapter members should definitely take to heart. Also, please remember to be thinking of potential initiates from your area that we can present to the chapter during the August meeting. Looking forward to see you at the August meeting,

Membership Dues To Be Collected In August

Donna Patterson, our chapter treasurer, will be ready to accept membership dues at our August 15th meeting. Dues are $67 for active members and $15 for reserve. Remember that Donna must send all our chapter dues in to International by October 31, 2009. Dues are $67.00. Among the benefits of membership are: interaction with educators from all levels, disciplines, and environments; source of professional and personal growth; support for graduate study through state and international scholarships; recognition and awards to members for exemplary achievements; venue for teaching and learning current educational and leadership practices; participation in Society workshops, conferences, seminars, and conventions; worldwide contacts sharing educational profession and focus. You are an integral part of our chapter and of our Society. Your continued membership is of value both to you and to our organization.

Due to technological problems, member spotlight will be postponed until the October newsletter. Please accept my apologies

The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch Read the words of wit and wisdom that Randy Pausch, computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon University, discusses in his last lecture. He has been diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer and only has a few months to live with his wife and young children. His lecture, "Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams", is a summation of everything that he believes about living. As he says, "we cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand." A Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick Catherine Land has answered an ad for a "reliable wife" and traveled to a remote Wisconsin town in the dead cold of winter. Once there, she marries Ralph Truitt, a wealthy businessman. Ralph and Catherine have hearts filled with anger and guilt and are looking for new beginnings. It is a complex tale of deception that twists and turns along the way.
