The Botanical Japanese Knot Bag is a ● 360 yards of bulky weight 5 yarn that is
handy color block purse that can be used non-stretchy or 100% cotton.
I used KnitPicks Billow Yarn (https://shrsl.com/3zr7u): 2
year-round! It features the beautiful knit skeins of off-white (240 yd) and 1 skein of green (120 yd).

Note: If you plan to use up an entire skein of C1 yarn for the base, make the Leaf (page 4) first.
Then, you can safely use up the rest of the C1 yarn on the bag’s base.

BASE & BODY OF BAG

Start with C1 yarn.

R1: Insert 6 sc in MR. (6)

Here is a look at the knit stitch (above, in off-white) versus

STRAPS
Note: The straps are worked in turned
rows, not in continuous rounds.

Strap#1 (shorter)

R1: Sc 12.

R2: Ch 1, turn. Sc 12. (12)


Beginning Strap #1.
Repeat R2 until your strap reaches 6” in
length.

Fasten off with a long tail for sewing.

Strap#2 (longer)

First, flatten the bag with Strap#1 on the


right. Count 18 sts to the left. Attach yarn in
the next st, which is where the first sc will
be made.

R1: Ch 1, sc 12. (12)


Strap #1 (shorter strap) complete. Length: 6”
R2: Ch 1, turn. Sc 12. (12)

Repeat R2 until your strap reaches 14” in


length.

Fasten off with a long tail for sewing.

Strap #2 (longer strap) complete. Length: 14”

Use C1 yarn.
1. Ch 8.
2. Insert 6 dc in 4th ch from hook. Dc in next ch, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch.
3. In the last ch: sl st, ch, sl st.
4. Now, work on the other side of the chain. Sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next ch.
5. Insert 6 dc in the last ch (same opening as where you started).

6. Join with a sl st to the first dc of the leaf.
7. Ch 30, or however many sts to wrap around one strap.
8. Fasten off with a long tail for sewing later.

Finishing Instructions
1. Attach the leaf’s chain around the shorter strap, and sew it securely.
2. Sew the ends of the two straps to the other side of the bag.
3. Weave in all ends.
4. If desired, you may add a cloth lining inside the bag to provide more support and durability.

Congratulations on finishing!

Open bag position. Closed bag position. (Insert longer strap through
the shorter strap.)
