3D Mounting Layout - Eplan
Some mechanical components can have several individually selectable mounting surfaces, allowing
the placement of other items. These include mounting panels, doors, walls, profiles, and also
electrical engineering and fluid power devices, which are represented by a 3D graphical macro.
Other mechanical components, e.g., mounting rails, have only an internally defined mounting surface
for devices, which cannot be changed and which are therefore also not shown in the tree view of the
layout space navigator.
You can generate 2D model views of the mounting panels and enclosures mounted in the layout
space, and these are inserted on project pages. These model views can include dimensions and other
information and can be used as production documents.
Reports in the form of enclosure legends and bills of material help you with calculating and planning
materials requirements.
The layout space navigator gives you a logical overview of your project data within a 3D mounting
layout:
l In the layout space navigator you can create layout spaces in order to view and to place
devices independently of project pages in a 3D view.
l In the layout spaces you can activate mounting spaces for placing devices from the layout
space navigator's popup menu.
l You can filter the display and switch between Tree and List views in the layout space
navigator in just the same way as in other navigators.
The 3D mounting layout navigator is used to list the devices available in the project so that they can
be placed in a layout space.

The layout space navigator and the 3D mounting layout navigator are the central tools for
configuring layout diagrams for mounting panels in the 3D mounting layout.
l The layout space navigator lists the layout spaces and their structure.
l The 3D mounting layout navigator lists the intended equipment items.
Logical structure
The layout space navigator maps the logical structure of the placed part. There are hierarchical
dependencies between all the items. If a superior item (such as a mounting rail) is moved or deleted,
the devices that are placed on it will be moved or deleted as well. This logical structure can also be
included in reports.
Layout space
As well as the logical structure display, there is also a 3D display area that shows the placed device.
This display is independent of any project page. The 3D model is displayed in a layout space that
allows the 3D bodies and their editing to be viewed.
It is therefore a basic requirement for working with 3D components that a layout space be first
created in the layout space navigator. This is the environment for the 3D data and the functional
logic that connects it.
You can insert, edit, delete, or place devices in the layout spaces.
The layout space shows an isometric view of the 3D model by default with shading (body surfaces
filled with color and shaded differently according to the angle).
Example:
You can delete layout spaces from the project without at the same time removing the devices
contained in the layout spaces from the project.
All 3 axes in the coordinates system are visible in the isometric view of the layout space. The axes
are distinguished by their color:
l X-axis: red
l Y-axis: green
l Z-axis: blue

Multiple entries may be selected in both the tree view and the list view. These selected devices can
then be placed on the mounting panel at the same time. It is also possible to select a node in the tree
view. All devices that are affected by this selection are placed together.

3D macros can be placed in a layout space as a window macro or symbol macro. In the Select macro
dialog the system automatically detects when a macro with the representation type '3D mounting
layout' has been selected and allows placement of this 3D macro in the layout space.
Note:
For the sake of optimal performance in your work with the EPLAN platform, you should save 2D
and 3D data not in a single macro file, but only in separate macro files. This way you can ensure that
2D users do not necessarily have to access the extensive 3D data volume.
file:///C:/Users/Administrator/AppData/Local/Temp/~hh2132.htm 17-06-2022
3D Mounting Layout with EPLAN Pro Panel Page 4 of 120
We recommend that you store the macro file with the 3D data and the "3D mounting layout"
representation type in parts management on the Mounting data tab in the Graphical macro field. The
macro file with the 2D data and the other representation types (Multi-line, Overview, etc.) should be
entered, as before, in the Technical data tab of parts management in the Macro field. The files could
be distinguished, for example, on the basis of name extensions (e.g., 3D macro ABC.12345_3D.ema
and the corresponding 2D macro ABC.12345_2D.ema).
In all actions in the 3D environment for which a part macro is used (e.g., Insert devices), it is the
"graphical part macro" that is checked first. If on the Mounting data tab a graphical macro has been
entered for the part, and if it contains the desired "3D mounting layout" representation type, this
macro will be used. If not, the "technical part macro" defined on the Technical data tab will be used.
Macro boxes are not used to create 3D macros in a macro project. 3D macros are always contained in
a layout space. The macro project contains a separate layout space for each macro. On automatic
generation of 3D macros from the macro project a macro is generated from each layout space. If you
wish to view the 3D macro on a page in addition to a schematic macro or 2D macro to make it easier
to organize and view the macro projects, then you can place a model view on the page. You can
jump from this view to the corresponding layout space via the popup menu.
All of these properties are available in the "Macro" property category. They are defined
automatically when you save a macro manually in the Save as dialog or when it is generated
automatically.
All 3D macros are saved as standard in a horizontal alignment (X/Y alignment). You can change the
position of the item subsequently using editing functions. The Edit > Device logic > Handle function
can be used to define 3D snap points.
Grouping in 3D macros
A 3D macro (in other words a layout space in a macro project) can contain several individual bodies
if there were several bodies included in the imported source file. Although a geometrical addition of
bodies is not possible, the Edit > Graphic > Unite function can be used to group all components of
the layout space in such a way that the 3D macro is treated like one item (for display in the navigator
or for selection).
Placeholder objects can be inserted into 3D macros. The definition method and behavior are similar
to those of placeholder objects in 2D macros, but the following differences apply:
l Instead of page properties, the layout space properties can be activated and given variables.
l The placeholder object is not displayed as an anchor symbol in the graphic, as it is on a project

l The objects can be placed in the layout space and on other objects.
l Other objects can be placed on the 3D objects.
l The placed objects fit in with the logical structure of the items.
All these properties in their entirety are known as the device logic. There are a number of functions
available for creating and editing the device logic. These functions are used following the use of
graphical import and editing functions and prepare the 3D graphic - which immediately after import
has no logic functions - for use as a 3D macros for devices. To ensure correct placement it is
necessary as a minimum to define a placement area; the other logic functions are optional.
These functions can be used in the schematic project and in the 3D macro project.
The following functions define the device logic. They can be accessed under the Edit > Device logic
menu items. The points and surfaces defined with the following functions are only visible in a 3D
macro project:
l Placement area > Define / Turn around / Move / Rotate: Definition of an area on an item on
which the 3D object itself is placed and aligned.
l Mounting point: Definition of points which as 3D snap points allow other components to dock
to the 3D object.
The following functions can be used in the schematic project and in the 3D macro project:
l Mounting surface: Definition of surfaces on which components can be placed; these surfaces

Handles and mounting points: Interactive points, lines, and areas in the device logic
The functions for defining the device logic work with interactive points, lines, and areas. User-
defined points and surfaces can be used to create dependencies in the assembly of 3D components.
Interactive points can also be added if necessary to components that have been imported from
external 3D CAD systems using the STEP exchange format, to control placing options or to define
degrees of freedom in the rotation and alignment of components to one another.
l Handles look for associated mounting points. They define points or areas which can only be
moved and placed on the corresponding mounting points.
l Mounting points and mounting surfaces only allow the associated handle to be snapped to,
moved to and placed on them. Mounting points may be points, lines, or areas.
Points Display
Handle (user-defined) Orange cuboid
Handle (default) Red cuboid
Mounting point (user-defined) Green cuboid
Mounting point (default) Blue cuboid
Base point Cyan cuboid
Defined interactive points can be displayed and edited via the View > Mounting aids menu items.
You can edit mounting points by double-clicking one of the cuboids displayed or by selecting
Properties popup menu item. The Properties: Mounting point dialog opens, in which you can
configure the mounting point in any way you like.
Mounting points can be deleted again by selecting Edit > Delete, for example.

Base points are components of the device logic that are used in working with enclosure accessories.
Base points are fixed defined mounting points in a layout space. You can use base points to install
enclosure items (e.g., side panels, base) at a fixed defined location in the accessories management.
These items cannot be moved subsequently anymore.
A distinction is made between automatically generated base points and user-defined base points. You
can use automatic base points to place enclosures and matching accessories from accessories
management, without having to generate detailed macros for this purpose. But there is also the
option to store user-defined base points in a macro and to use them in accessories management as the
property of an accessory placement.
Automatic base points are generated for all enclosures that are generated directly without macro
from the parts database. (Product group "Enclosure", Product subgroup "Component" and "Body").
The automatic base points are used only for the automatic placement of the accessories and are not
calculated in the event of a manual placement.
In the data transfer of accessory parts from EPLAN Cabinet, the existing base points are applied and
converted to automatic base points.

3D Mounting Layout with EPLAN Pro Panel Page 8 of 120
User-defined base points are mounting points manually placed in a macro by the user with
predefined properties. They can be inserted via the Edit > Device logic > Base points menu items.
Similar to the definition of mounting points, a point is selected in the layout space at which the base
point is to be defined. Placement options can be used for this. In the Properties: Base point dialog
that is displayed subsequently, all base points are shown as available that are also generated as
automatic base points.
For enclosures that have been imported in the layout space as STEP data, all base points must be
placed manually. However, base points for Rittal enclosure series (e.g., "TS8") are always at the
same positions. In connection with the creation of enclosures of the Rittal series "TS8", "AE", and
"CM", it is possible to place the base points automatically in a manner suitable for the enclosure
series. Using the Edit > Device logic > Transfer base point scheme menu items, the base points are
generated automatically in a manner suitable for the selected enclosure series.

The preparatory step is always the detailed manual assignment of the logic to the first enclosure of
the design with the functions of the device logic:
The first enclosure of a design defined in this way will be used as a model for the automatic
definition of the other enclosures of this design. You must keep in mind that this sample enclosure
and subsequently defined enclosures must always be of the same design (e.g., AE, CM, TS8).
file:///C:/Users/Administrator/AppData/Local/Temp/~hh2132.htm 17-06-2022
3D Mounting Layout with EPLAN Pro Panel Page 9 of 120
After the sample enclosure has been defined, Automatic enclosure interpretation is launched. An
item definition "Enclosure" is generated from the items selected in the layout space. The following
properties are defined automatically:
Then, you must select the sample enclosure whose logic is to be transferred to the new item
definition.
In the last step, the program analyzes the sample enclosure and the new enclosure, and defines
automatically at the new enclosure the items including mounting surfaces as well as all other
properties:
l Function definition
l Mounting surfaces
l Transparency
l Color
l Layer
l Item designation
l Item description
l Property Item is fastened unmovably to the superior item
l Property arrangements.
Limitations in the application of automatic enclosure interpretation can occur in case of different
numbers of doors or significant differences in size between the model enclosure and target enclosure.
In this case, some items may not be able to be assigned, so that these items may have to be defined
manually at the target enclosure.

In such a function-based report, the 3D part placements are evaluated for which the Create mounting
list (ID 36032) property has been activated in the property dialog. This property can be selected via
property selection for all 3D objects (except for mounting surfaces). For a device with the activated
property, all devices of the hierarchy level immediately below are listed in the output mounting list.
The listed objects are sorted by legend item by default.
To create a mounting list, you can use the "Mounting list" report type available from the Select

report dialog. As with other function-related reports, too, when outputting the mounting list you can
make a manual selection. In the subsequent Manual selection dialog, all 3D part placements are
listed for which the Create mounting list property has been activated.
Example:
In creating the mounting list, the form is used that was specified in the project-specific Settings:
Output to pages dialog for the "Mounting list (*.f32)" form type. You can select placeholder texts
from the following elements for the forms of this type in the Placeholder texts - Mounting list dialog:
l Parts data
l Part placements
l Part reference data
l Device data
l Record.
The same placeholder texts are available for selection in both the header and data area.
If you want to know which devices have been set aside for the generation of the mounting list, create
a new filter for the layout space navigator and select for such filter the Create mounting list property
as a filter criterion.

Changing viewpoint
This functionality generates different orthogonal (top, bottom, left, right, front, back) or isometric
views (south-west, south-east, north-east, north-west) of your layout space. The designations of the
four isometric viewpoints determine the orientation from which the model is viewed. Additionally,
the viewpoint is rotated 60° downwards.
The content of the layout space display is refreshed according to which view is selected.
Note:
When switching the 3D viewpoint, the view becomes animated and is rotated into the new position.
Using the user setting Rotate when changing the viewpoints, this animation can be switched off, so
that the viewpoint is changed without rotation.
Rotate viewpoint
With this functionality, you can change the viewpoint of the graphic by moving the mouse.
The display in the layout space follows the movement of the mouse, and rotates in the
corresponding direction.
4. Once the required viewing angle is set, release the mouse button and exit the action.
The content of the layout space is displayed with the selected viewing angle until you select
a different viewpoint.
Simplified representation
With this functionality, you can reduce the detail shown in the graphic of the parts placed in the
layout space. You can set which items are to be shown in a simplified representation in the Options >

Busbar systems are usually placed on mounting panels, but can also be placed on any other mounting
surface. Selection and placement are similar to those of mounting rails and wire ducts:
l Upon opening, only those parts from parts management are displayed that have also been
classified as busbar systems.
l With busbar systems, the actual busbars and the additionally required supports are placed in a
single work step. The number of supports is adjustable and can be modified subsequently. It is
also possible to place items without supports.
l A busbar system already placed can be modified subsequently without losing any items placed
on it.
l A drilling pattern can be assigned to the supports of the busbar system via parts management.
l When placing a busbar system, delivery lengths can be taken into consideration automatically.
l Devices can be placed directly on the poles of a busbar system.
l The individual poles of a busbar system have their own part numbers and can be modified
individually in terms of length. In practice, the individual poles are often of different lengths.
This is also considered in the report of a bill of materials.
l Poles are manufactured individually. To connect the other copper components and cables, the
poles are drilled.

Note:
If a support with a graphical macro is entered in the parts data of the busbar system on the Busbar
system tab, the handle that is defined in this macro is the first to be used during the placement. This
way, for example, it is possible to achieve that the handle is located in the center of a drill hole in the
support. The default handles that are not defined in the macro can be selected in the Placement
options dialog or via the [A] key.
During the placing of an integrated busbar system, the handle is on the left side of the support when
entering the starting point. For the input of the end point, the handle is switched to "Right". When
using a macro for the supports, however, the handle from the macro for the starting and end point is
used.
Each time you press [A], the handle changes from the "Center" position to "Top", and

Notes:
l If an enclosure base is to be placed from the Accessory placement dialog that is defined in
parts management by means of the properties Width, Height, and Depth, the values of the
Depth and Height properties of the part must be replaced, so that the accessory part is placed
in the correct position.
l Apart from the part properties Width, Height, and Depth, EPLAN Pro Panel also allows for
devices and items to be visualized through qualified 3D graphical macros.
To create your own devices, items, and 3D graphical macros, you can import 3D model data
into EPLAN Pro Panel in the STEP format. This data, mostly provided by component
manufacturers, is usually based on the CAD construction data of the component manufacturer
and are often complex as well as detailed.
The use of complex and detailed 3D models as a basis for EPLAN 3D graphical macros,
accordingly, is more RAM-intensive, and may affect the performance of the program
adversely during project editing in EPLAN.

l The surface that is to be defined as a mounting surface must be limited by points which are
geometrically in the same plane. Depending on the quality of the imported 3D data, surfaces
may occur which do not meet this condition. Mounting surfaces cannot be defined on such
surfaces.
l The reference point of the mounting surface is usually in the bottom left. When surfaces are
not perpendicular, the mounting surface also has to form a surrounding rectangle with a
reference point in the bottom left. If - because the item has special shapes - the automatic
alignment of the mounting surface fails, the Adjust X-axis and Adjust Y-axis functionalities
can be used to correct the situation.
l If several 3D objects are combined into an item in imported STEP data (e.g., mounting panel
and support), the origin of the mounting surface can be outside the area set aside for the
placement. To prevent errors in the placement of a device relative to the origin of the mounting
surface, the size of the area set aside for the placement can be changed, and the position of the
origin can be adjusted. To do so, use the Change size function in the popup menu of the layout
space navigator.
l When creating macros with NC-relevant mounting surfaces, the field size is not entered
automatically but must be defined manually. To do so, use the Field size function in the popup
menu of the layout space navigator.

Defining Handle
Defining a Handle
A handle is used to place a 3D macro. In addition to the handles, which are generated automatically
for 3D bodies, there is a user-defined handle in the macro. When placing an item in the project,
select this handle in the placement options in the Handle field under the name "Graphical macro".
Preconditions:
1. Select the Edit > Device logic > Handle menu items.
2. Move the cursor over the 3D geometry.
The 3D snap points of the object are displayed. These are the end or center points of an
edge or the corner points of a cuboid surrounding the object.
3. Click the required point.
Tips:
l If you keep the [Ctrl] key pressed while clicking two random and consecutive geometric
points, a handle, mounting point or base point will be placed in the center between the
geometric points. This input method can be used, for example, to place the point in the center
of a drill hole.
l In objects that are imported from STEP or DXF data, drill holes already have a center. In such
cases, you can use the object snap in order to place points or objects on that center.
Tips:
l In the Edit > Create window macro function, modify the handle in the Save as dialog, [Extras]
button, using the Move handle menu item.
5. To define the extended handle logic, edit the properties of the handle.

Mounting points can have a direction and a rotation, which means that placement of the 3D objects
can be controlled using a set of rules:
l The direction indicates the direction in which the object to be placed on the mounting point is
to be oriented.
l The rotation also allows the object to be placed to be moved around the selected direction axis.
Preconditions:
1. Select the menu items Edit > Device logic > Mounting point.
Points, edges or surfaces below the cursor are automatically highlighted. Snap points are
displayed.
Tips:
l If you keep the [Ctrl] key pressed while clicking two random and consecutive geometric
points, a handle, mounting point or base point will be placed in the center between the
geometric points. This input method can be used, for example, to place the point in the center
of a drill hole.
l In objects that are imported from STEP or DXF data, drill holes already have a center. In such
cases, you can use the object snap in order to place points or objects on that center.
4. Enter the values you wish to use in the Name, Description, Direction and Rotation fields.
5. When all the settings have been completed correctly, click [OK].

handle is always projected onto the defined placement area when placing it.
Preconditions:
1. Select the menu items Edit > Device logic > Placement area > Define.
2. Move the cursor over the surfaces of the 3D body.
The selected area is defined as the placement area. Any area that projects beyond the limits
of the selected area will appear transparent. Handles are created at the corners and centers of
the limiting edges.
Note:
The area that is to be defined as the placement area has to be limited by points that lie geometrically
in a common level. Depending on the quality of the imported 3D data, surfaces may occur which do
not meet this condition. Placement areas cannot be defined on such surfaces.
Example:
Turn around placement area rotates the placement area by 180° horizontally.
1. Select the menu items Edit > Device logic > Placement area > Turn around.
Example:
Move placement area moves the position of the placement area in the Z-direction. This allows the
mounting depth of the 3D macro to be varied.
1. Select the menu items Edit > Device logic > Placement area > Move.
2. Enter the value of the displacement on the keyboard.
If a positive number or a number without prefix is entered, the placement area is moved
upwards.

If a negative number with a preceding "-" is entered, the placement area is moved
downwards.
Example:
Rotate placement area rotates the placement area vertically around its center. This allows rotated
placement of the 3D macro.
1. Select the menu items Edit > Device logic > Placement area > Rotate.
2. Enter the radius of the rotation on the keyboard.
If a negative number with a preceding "-" is entered, the 3D object is moved clockwise on
the placement area.

If the placed part does not have predefined connection points, it is possible to define the connection
points on the part placement graphically. These graphical connection points are also local and apply
to the edited part placement. Like all local connection points, the graphically defined connection
points, too, can be modified individually (position, connection point direction). The modified
connection point data of local connection points can then be used again in order to transfer them to
connection point patterns in parts management.
Preconditions:

file:///C:/Users/Administrator/AppData/Local/Temp/~hh2132.htm 17-06-2022
3D Mounting Layout with EPLAN Pro Panel Page 64 of 120
Precondition:
You have opened a project. A layout space is open. The layout space contains 3D part placements or
objects that have been loaded via Layout space > Import (3D graphic).
You are prompted to select the objects that should belong to the macro.
2. Draw a border around the objects that should belong to the macro.
In the Representation type field, the entry "3D mounting layout" is displayed, which cannot
be modified.
4. From the Variant field select the required variant for the macro.
"Variant A" is the default setting. You can generate further variants by rotating the macro
geometry, or by changing the handle and saving the 3D macro under the same name, but as a
different variant.
5. Select the Edit > Device logic > Handle menu items.
The cursor will be surrounded by a square, that you can set to 3D snap points on the
geometry, to define the handle. Once the handle is placed, the Save as dialog reappears. The
defined handle is always projected onto the placement area.
6. Click [OK].
The 3D macro is saved to the set directory. It can then be called up for placement.
3D graphic files can be imported in STEP format. You can generate files of this type with a 3D CAD
system, or obtain them from the storage mediums of various manufacturers. After importing the
original position of the graphic can be influenced by defining and rotating a placement area so that
the desired areas are always rotated to the placement position when the macro is placed as a window
macro and as a device.
Precondition:
1. Select the menu items Layout space > Import (3D graphic).
The Open dialog is displayed. In the File type field, the default is set to "STEP file (*.stp,
*.step, *.ste)".
2. Select a directory and in this, select a file containing the 3D graphic in STEP format to be
imported, and click [Open].
The 3D graphic from the STEP file is loaded in the layout space and displayed as a 3D
object.
3. Depending on the quality of the source data, the 3D graphic may have to be edited, before it
can be saved as a 3D macro. In order to achieve uniform behavior when placing a macro that
contains rotated graphics, select the menu items Edit > Device logic > Placement area >
file:///C:/Users/Administrator/AppData/Local/Temp/~hh2132.htm 17-06-2022
3D Mounting Layout with EPLAN Pro Panel Page 65 of 120
Define and Edit > Device logic > Placement area > Rotate.
4. Irrespective of the placement position you can use Edit > Graphic > Unite to combine all the
items of the layout space so that a 3D macro is handled like one item when used.
5. Save the 3D macro via the Edit > Create window macro menu items.
This function works in the same way as Generating macros from DXF / DWG files.
3D window macros (*.ema) are generated directly from single or multiple STEP files,
without being loaded into a layout space and edited before saving.
In the same way as 2D macros, 3D macros can be generated automatically from macro projects.
1. Select the menu items Utilities > Generate macros > Automatically from macro project.
All 3D macros or each individually selected one are saved from the macro project layout
spaces as *.ema or *.ems files.
Note:
For the sake of optimal performance in your work with the EPLAN platform, you should save 2D
and 3D data not in a single macro file, but only in separate macro files. This way you can ensure that
2D users do not necessarily have to access the extensive 3D data volume.

3D macros are placed in the layout space in the same way as devices.
Preconditions:
The name of the 3D macro file is transferred to the File name field. The macro description
text is displayed in the dialog. Click the Preview check box to display the graphical preview of
the 3D macro.
3. Click [Open].
The 3D macro hangs on the cursor. The handle defined in the 3D macro file is displayed as
an orange cuboid.
4. Press [A] to change the handle.
Each time pushbutton [A] is actuated, the handle changes from the original position to one
of the other possible handles. The handle currently selected is colored red.
5. Move the 3D macro close to a mounting panel or another object.
As when placing devices, the mounting surface or mounting rail under the cursor is
automatically activated. 3D snap points are also displayed.
6. Click at the required position to place the 3D macro.
7. Set the desired numbering options in the Insertion mode dialog and click [OK].
The 3D macro is inserted. The macro remains on the cursor and you can keep placing it
until you use [Esc] to cancel placement.
Note:
As well as the part properties width, height and depth, EPLAN Pro Panel also provides the option of
displaying devices and items using qualified 3D graphical macros.
To create your own devices, items and 3D graphical macros, 3D model data can be imported into
EPLAN Pro Panel in the STEP format. This data, normally provided by component manufacturers, is
usually based on the component manufacturer's CAD design data, and is often complex and detailed.
Using complex, detailed 3D models as the basis for EPLAN 3D graphical macros is correspondingly
RAM-intensive and can have a negative impact on the program's performance when editing projects
in EPLAN.
For further information and advice on this subject, please contact EPLAN Support.

Any surface on a component can be defined as a mounting surface using the Edit >
Device logic > Mounting surface menu items. The reference point of this surface is
usually in the bottom left. When surfaces are not perpendicular, the mounting
surface also has to form a surrounding rectangle with a reference point in the
bottom left.
Note:
Prior to creating mounting surfaces, the object must be rotated into the correct

position.
If - because the item has special shapes - the automatic alignment of the mounting
surface fails, the Adjust X-axis and Adjust Y-axis functionalities can be used to
correct the situation.
Mounting
surface
(mounting When one of the functionalities has been called, the prompt "Starting point for
surfaces only) > direction" appears in the status bar. When the cursor is moved over the mounting
surface, geometric points appear. Click to select a point. Next the prompt "End
point for direction" appears in the status bar. Now select the second point.
Adjust X-axis /
The X-axis or the Y-axis of the mounting surface is aligned by the direction of the
Adjusting Y-
connection from start and end point. The reference point of the mounting surface is
axis
moved in such a way that it lies on the bottom left point of the mounting surface.
The mounting surface is then activated so that the change becomes directly visible.
If the selected points are not on the current mounting surface, the two points are
projected onto the mounting surface and then the X- or Y-axis is aligned.
After importing STEP data, you can generate mounting surfaces on the imported
3D objects. If several 3D objects are combined into an item in the STEP data to be
imported (e.g., mounting panel and support), it is possible that the mounting
surface generated on it is geared to the dimensions of the attachments. Thus, the
origin of the mounting surface is outside of the area set aside for the placement.
The placing of devices is, thus, possible there as well, but not desired.
Mounting
The position of the origin is illustrated in the following figures by means of a
surface
white circle.
(mounting
surfaces only) >
Change size
After the execution, two vertical and two horizontal lines will appear that delimit
the size of the mounting surface. The origin is always on the bottom left at the
intersection of the left and bottom lines. By clicking one of the lines, you can move
such a line and, thus, redefine the size of this mounting surface.

The area set aside for the placement is redefined; the origin is set accordingly.
The "field size" defines the size of an NC-relevant mounting surface from a
production perspective. NC machines determine the coordinates of the drill holes
and milling cuts to be made, always starting from a point of origin where they wait
for a surface to be machined. Therefore, you must consider whether a mounting
panel including attachments will be inserted in the drilling robot or whether the
attachments will be removed first. The field size signals to the machine the size of
the item to be machined and the location of the surface to be machined on the
machine.
After the execution, two vertical and two horizontal lines will appear that delimit
the field size. By clicking one of the lines, you can move such a line and, thus,
Field size redefine the field size of this mounting surface.
(mounting
surfaces only)
When creating macros with NC-relevant mounting surfaces, the field size is not
entered automatically but must be defined manually.

This dialog allows you to set the options for the placement of parts in the 3D mounting layout.
Angle:
Rotation angles 0°, 45°, 90°, 135°, 180°, -45°, -90° and -135° can be selected from this drop-down
list, and it is also possible to enter user-defined values here. Rotation is always around the handle
and around the Z-axis. The default value is "0°".
The Angle setting is grayed out for enclosures and for devices with a variable length (wire duct,
mounting rail, cable clamp rail, busbar system), and cannot be modified. With variable length
devices, the 0°, 90°, 180° and -90° rotation angles are set by rotating the device in the appropriate
direction with the mouse, if the starting point of part placement has been specified, but not yet the

end point.
The Angle setting is grayed out during the placing, inserting, moving, and duplicating of cut-outs of
the "Drill hole" and "Threaded hole" types and cannot be changed since these objects are fully
symmetrical.
Handle:
The handle defines the position of the device, relative to the cursor. Different handles are available
from a drop-down list: "Lower left", "Lower center", etc.
The handles for part placements with a simplified representation (cuboid generated from part
dimensions) are at the corner points on the base of the body.
You can enter an offset separately for each of the X, Y and Z directions in these fields. The fields are
preset with the default value "0". Values can be entered as mm or inches. The base point for the
offset is the part placement handle.
Offset values are managed differently during input of start and end point by means of the input box.
As soon as the point coordinates are entered in the input box, the offset values that have been defined
in the Placement options dialog are ignored and the item is placed on the entered coordinates.
If mounting clearances are defined in part definition, selecting this check box when changing the
handle adds them to the handle coordinates as an offset.
This option is only available for the actions Move, Duplicate, Rotate, and Insert. If the check box is
selected and the dialog has been closed with [OK], then the objects hanging on the cursor will
immediately be moved by the set offset value. Placement with the mouse is not necessary here. The
action is then completed.
You can define placement defaults in the properties of a handle. Here the mounting points and base
points are defined that fit this handle. Using this check box, you can deactivate the extended logic
during the placement of an item with an extended handle. This way, you can place the affected item
even without placement restrictions.
If this check box is activated, only the mounting points or base points will be offered that have been
entered in the properties of the affected handle. When placing a macro with extended handle logic
(that is, when mounting points have been assigned), the Extended handle logic check box is always
activated.
If the check box is deactivated, all possible mounting points and base points are displayed and used
again.

Number:
Quantity specifies how often part placement is to occur. The quantity can be selected from a drop-
down list or entered manually. The default value is "1". Only positive whole numbers greater than or
equal to 1 can be entered.
Distance:
With a multiple placement, this defines the distance between the individual part placements in mm or
inches. Enter the desired value here. The default value is "0".
The next setting Distance reference, has direct relevance to this setting.
Distance reference:
Using this drop-down list, you specify what the distance set in the Distance field refers to. The
"Center distance" setting is the default value. The distance information relates to the distance from
body center to body center. With the "Intermediate space distance" setting, the distance information
relates to the distance between the edges immediately opposite one another.
The distance reference can be changed during a multiple placement and from then on, will apply to
all the other part placements.
The choice of handle does not affect the behavior of this setting.
Placing mode:
Defines the direction in which part placements are to be placed during a multiple placement. The
following options are available in the drop-down list:
1. From left to right: The first device hangs on the cursor and is placed. The other devices are
automatically placed to the right of this.
2. From right to left: The first device hangs on the cursor and is placed. The other devices are
automatically placed to the left of this.
3. From top to bottom: The first device hangs on the cursor and is placed. The other devices are
automatically placed below this.
4. From bottom to top: The first device hangs on the cursor and is placed. The other devices are
automatically placed above this.
5. Individual: Devices selected together are not automatically placed next to each other. Once the
first item has been placed, the second item hangs on the cursor and can be placed anywhere
else, until all the selected items have been placed or placement is canceled.
With the first four options, any distance between the devices that may have been specified, will be
taken into account. The same, set handle will be used for all devices.

Representation type:
Only the representation type 3D mounting layout is available when storing 3D macros.
Variant:
Use the drop-down list to specify the variant designation for the macro to be created. "Variant A" is
the default.
Note:
Angle and other macro variants are not created automatically, but must be manually generated by
you in the layout space, and then finally stored under the same name with a different variant
designation. Up to 16 variants can be selected for each macro. If you have created different variants
of a macro, then you can choose between the variants when inserting.
If you select an existing macro variant, then after clicking [OK] you will have to confirm the prompt
to overwrite the old macro variant.
Description:
Here you enter a recognizable description for the macro file. This text is displayed below the
graphical preview in a comments field when inserting the macro.

[Extras]:
l Move handle: The handle is defined as the point where the cursor "sticks" when the macro is
inserted. Normally, the macro hangs at the "top, left" on the first insertion point.
Choose this option if you want to position the handle yourself. The Save as dialog is briefly
closed. Move the cursor to the desired position and, with a mouse click on the 3D objects to be
saved as a macro, define the position where the handle of the macro is to be located. To this
purpose you can use 3D handles that are displayed when the cursor is moved near them.
EPLAN then displays the Save as dialog again and you can complete the macro.
You can reposition the handle as often as you wish. Its position when creating the macro, and
later in the macro preview, is indicated by a special graphical symbol.

In this dialog specify the settings for the export of 3D graphic data to the STEP format.
Source:
This field displays the source of the export. For an entire project, this is the project name; for
individual layout spaces the full layout space names are displayed (including the structure identifiers
Functional assignment, Higher-level function, etc.). The entries in this field cannot be modified.

If this export medium is selected, the STEP file is output to a storage medium. Enter the storage
location in the Output directory field. The directory is pre-selected that is defined for the STEP
export in the user settings.
The [...] button opens the Browse for folder dialog in order to select any directory of your choice for
the export.
Via Popup menu > Insert path variable you branch to the Select path variable dialog, where you can
select one of the available EPLAN-specific path variables.
E-mail:
If this export medium is selected, the STEP file is compressed and sent as an e-mail. From the Split
size drop-down list select the maximum size for an individual e-mail file. You can choose values
from 1 MB to 10 MB or the entry "Unlimited". EPLAN automatically creates the number of e-mail
files required to send the whole project. All individual mails in the group will have this text in the
subject line: "<File name> n/m" entered. "n" is the number of the packet and "m" is the overall
quantity of the packets.
File name:
When exporting a single layout space, you have the option of entering any random file name. You
can use the [...] button to assign a file name or select the name of an existing file.
If no file name is specified, a name is assigned to the exported file on the basis of the Generate file
names setting.
Via Popup menu > Insert path variable you open the Select path variable dialog, where you can
select one of the available EPLAN-specific path variables.
When exporting multiple layout spaces, the file name cannot be freely chosen. STEP files are created
as a consecutive number in the specified target directory, or from the layout space name, or from the
properties; this depends on the settings of the selected scheme.
If you activate this check box, the currently selected layout space is extended to all layout spaces of
the project.
If this check box is deselected, then only the selected layout spaces are exported.
If you have already selected a single project (and not set any filters), then this check box is grayed-
out. You can then no longer change the relevant settings.

Degree of detailing:
To adjust the data volume upon import of STEP files, Cabinet projects, and Cabinet macros, you can
pre-select the degree of detailing with a slide control. There are five settings between the following
values:
l Low
l Medium
l High.
A low degree of detailing accelerates the import of large STEP files, but does result in a rougher
representation of roundings. A high degree of detailing improves the representation of roundings, but
also increases the data volume and time required for the import.

List:
This list contains the names and descriptions of the drilling patterns defined in the parts
management. By selecting an entry and clicking [OK], you can select the drilling pattern to insert it.
After the placement, the grouping of the individual cut-outs is broken down to form a drilling
pattern. The components of the drilling pattern can then be handled as if they had been placed
individually.

In this dialog, you execute the import of data from external programs (other CAE systems, ERP
systems, Excel, etc.) into an EPLAN project in order to create a complete panel layout including
routing connections on the basis of such data. The following is imported: device tag / terminal strip
lists and wiring lists with the file name extensions TXT and CSV, as well as text files with the file
name extension ASC.
The device tag list is imported first. This creates multi-line main functions with one or several parts
in the project. Subsequently, these parts must be placed in the layout space manually. This creates
part placements.
In the second step, the routing connections are imported. This creates non-routed routing
connections, if both the source and target of the imported routing connections are found.
