4. Introduction

• The references in this document are for Modbus registers in decimal if not else stated.
• Commands & Reprogramming is split up in three categories
o Standard commands
 Setting “Commands” is enabled by default; no possibility to disable
 Condition to accept commands: unit controller must be in LAN control mode
o Full Remote Control commands
 These advanced commands allow full control of the machine
 Typically for remote control of speed or setpoint / Pressure Band
 Only accepted by Mk5 gateway if “Full Remote Control” is enabled
 Setting “Full remote control’ is disabled by default and can only be enabled by Modi5
in ‘full control’ mode
 Selection “Yes but no Turbo” is only applicable when the new Mk5 Turbo application
will be available
o Modifying Parameters
 In this mode the local setpoint / Pressure band levels can be selected and overwritten
 Only accepted by Mk5 gateway if “Modify Parameters” is enabled
 Setting “Modify Params” is enabled by default; no possibility to disable
• Information for CD dryer timer card: The address mapping is fixed and can be found in a separate excel
document “TimerCard_ed9b”; This is supported only by Timer cards edition 9b onwards. It contains
only standard commands ‘Start’ and ‘Stop’.
• Information for MkIV unit controllers
o The commands and reprogramming available for MkIV controller: see old user manuals for
ComBox-S (Modbus) and ComBox-P (Profibus).
o The excel sheet “Mapping for a MkiV unit controller read by MkIV ComBox versus Mk5
gateway” gives an overview of the compatibility – when a ComBox is replaced by a Mk5
gateway.
o Mk5 Gateway no longer allows all commands and all reprogramming by default; there are 3
different categories (analogue to Mk5 unit controller)
• Information for Mk5 Unit controllers
o The standard commands and reprogramming available for Mk5 can be found in the address
mapping generated by Speci5.
o This document describes what is possible after enabling ‘full remote control’ and modifying
Parameters.
o The address mapping for a Mk5 controller is not compatible between a ComBox and the Mk5
Gateway.
 It is not possible to make one excel sheet with an overview of all possible differences.
 When a ComBox is replaced by a Mk5 gateway, you should generate two address
mappings for the Mk5 unit controller by Speci5; one for the ComBox and one for the
Mk5 Gateway. If you compare all registers you can check the differences required for
the DCS or PLC program.
 See example in excel sheet “Mk5GA15VSD Modbus mapping compatibility”

o Explanation how to interpret counters

 Example Running Hours [s]

Register Higher Byte Lower Byte

301 B4 B2

302 B2 B1

Double WORD: Running Hours  B4 B3 B2 B1

00 2C 93 45  2921285 sec  811 hrs

 Example VSD [%] counters

Values in [s]; to be compared with total Running Hours
e.g.

Running hours [s] 65 [s]

01 – 20 41 [s]
21 – 40 13 [s] 13*100/65 = 20 %
41 – 60 03 [s] 3*100/65 = 4.61 -> 5%
61 – 80 01 [s] 1*100/65 = 1.53 -> 2 %
81 – 100 07 [s] 7*100/65 = 10.76 -> 11 %
Total = 38 %
Calculate 01 – 20 [%] 100 – 38 = 62 %

o Explanation how to interpret SPM readings done by Mk5 controllers

The 2 bytes must be interpreted as 2 separate bytes
Interpretation is different when read by ComBox / Gateway
For the Mk5 Gateway: (as indicated in the address mapping from Speci5)
High Byte contains carpet value [db] value from 0 – 80
Low Byte contains peak value [db] value from 0 – 80
Example: value HEX “1120” => carpet: HEX “11”=17 [db]; peak: HEX “20”=32 [db]
For the ComBox-S: (incorrect indicated in the address mapping from Speci5)
Low Byte contains carpet value [db] value from 0 – 80
High Byte contains peak value [db] value from 0 – 80
A sensor error is NOT yet indicated (Mk5 applications need some bugfix – check new database
release and release notes): now values 0 are returned iso HEX “7FFF”.
The SPM value cannot be negative
o detailed info about running status of a dryer (will be improved in the future - CMS)

5. Commands

5.1. Standard commands (registers 2001 & 2004)

• For a Mk5: commands overview is given in the Address mapping from Speci5
o Commands are only accepted by the controller in LAN control mode
o ES commands are only applicable for ESi and ES6
o ESi commands are only accepted when ESi is in LAN control mode (this is not the same as unit
controller in LAN control mode!)
o ES6 commands are only accepted when the ES6 is in LAN control mode
o Other registers are available for other ES systems (see detailed chapters at the end of this
document)
• For a MkIV: check the old user manuals and the excel sheet “Mapping for a MkiV unit controller read
by MkIV ComBox versus Mk5 gateway” for compatibility
o Commands are only accepted by the controller in LAN control mode
o Commands are only applicable as specified
o Other registers are available for other ES systems (see detailed chapters)

5.2. Full Remote Control commands (registers 2002 and External commands)
• Register 2002 change ‘sub’ control mode in LAN control mode; this is required for external speed /
setpoint control.
• For Modbus

• The following chapters describe the use of the External Commands for Full remote control.

5.3. External Speed commands for MkIV & Mk5 VSD

• For a MkiV: register 1071
• For a Mk5: register 872
• Functionality
o External speed commands are only accepted in Control mode 4c
o Whenever during a certain period (setting ‘communication timeout’ of the controller, default
value = 20 s) no speed command or no command ‘switch to 4c’ is received the controller will
revert automatically to Control Mode 4a and regulate to its local setpoint.

30/08/2013
PM xxxx xxxx xx Page 5 of 9
o To start the VSD machine a value equal or higher than the ‘start’ speed must be sent (this is a
setting in the controller part of the ‘external speed control’ Structure)
o To stop the VSD machine a value equal or lower than the ‘stop’ speed must be sent (this is a
setting in the controller part of the ‘external speed control’ Structure)
o To unload the VSD machine (only applicable for Z- VSD) a value equal or lower than the
‘unload’ speed must be sent . The setting ‘unload’ speed is calculated as (‘stop’ speed + ‘start’
speed) / 2.
• Example of the commands for the Modbus protocol for a Mk5

5.4. External Setpoint commands for MkIV & Mk5 VSD

• For a MkiV: register 1072
• For a Mk5: register 871
• External Setpoint control
o External Setpoint commands are only accepted in control mode 4b
o Whenever during a certain period (setting ‘communication timeout’ of the controller, default
value = 20 s) no speed command or no command ‘switch to 4b’ is received the controller will
revert automatically to Control Mode 4a and regulate to its local setpoint.
• Example of the commands for the Modbus protocol for a Mk5

5.5. External Pressure Band levels for Mk5 Fixed speed
• The pressure band levels of a ESi or ES6 can NOT be remotely controlled; only the pressure band levels
of a fixed speed compressor.
• Registers for Modbus protocol

• Registers for Profibus protocol

• This functionality is only working for new application versions of Mk5 (2.x); check the database
information and release notes.
• External pressure Band levels control
o Commands are only accepted in control mode 4b
o Whenever during a certain period (setting ‘communication timeout’ of the controller, default
value = 20 s) no speed command or no command ‘switch to 4b’ is received the controller will
revert automatically to Control Mode 4a and regulate to its local pressure band levels.
• Example of the commands for the Modbus protocol for a Mk5

5.6. Modify Parameters commands for MkIV

• For Fixed speed: registers 1051 – 1053
• For VSD: registers: 1061 – 1065
• For ESi/ES6: registers 1081 – 1085
• For High Pressure controllers (Crépelle) : registers 1091 – 1100
• For ZH turbo: registers 1111 – 1117
• For more info: consult old user manuals.
• Overwriting actual values used by control algorithm of unit controller can be done in Control Modes
2a, 3a, 4a; The controller does not revert to original values afterwards.

PM xxxx xxxx xx Page 7 of 9
5.7. Modify Parameters commands for Mk5
• Although you can find these registers always in the address mapping generated by Speci5, the
command will only be accepted if the setting ‘Modify Params’ is enabled.
• For Fixed speed: select the used Pressure Band (1 or 2): register 861
• For VSD: select used Setpoint (1 or 2): registers 851
• For ESi/ES6: select used Pressure Band (1 or 2): register 881
• Overwriting actual values used by control algorithm of unit controller can be done in Control Modes
2a, 3a, 4a.

5.8. Internal data available

• Every Mk5 application can have some specific data; this depends of the application.
• The data can only be read if the setting Internal available is enabled
• By default this is only applicable for the Energy Recovery application
• Registers and data specification: can be found in the address mapping generated by Speci5
• Example for ER90; for more detailed explanation of this data, you can contact the technical specialist
of the E.R. system.

5.9. How to enable ‘Remote Control’ commands and “Modify Parameters’ commands
By default, the Mk5 Gateway software is parameterized in a way that remotely controlling Atlas Copco equipment is limited.
How to Enable more possiblities:
The following steps describe how the Mk5 Gateway can be parameterized for advanced Remote Control.

1. Modi5
Open Modi5 and connect to the Mk5 Gateway module.

2. Log in as “Expert” by entering the password.

3. Go to the “General Settings” page and a dataset to “Gateway Parameters” if not yet existing.
Next, alter the ‘Remote Control’ and “Modify Parameters” to ‘Yes’.

4. Perform a “Quick Download” to store the parameters in the Mk5 Gateway controller.

5.10. ES8 Central controller
• The commands and reprogramming available for ES8 controller: see old user manuals for ComBox-S
(Modbus) and ComBox-P (Profibus).
• The excel sheet “Mapping for a MkiV unit controller read by MkIV ComBox versus Mk5 gateway” gives
an overview of the compatibility – when a ComBox is replaced by a Mk5 gateway.
• In the Mk5 Gateway there are no filters for remote controlling the ES130.

5.11. ES130 Central controller

• The commands and reprogramming available for ES130 controller: see old user manuals for ComBox-S

5.12. ES16 - ES360 Central controller

• All available registers to read and write are listed in the address mapping generated by the ES Tuner.
The document includes some explanations.
• ComBox-S (Modbus) and ComBox-P (Profibus) only support the registers as mentioned in the old user
manuals for ES130. So only when these registers corresponds to the mapping generated from an ES16
/ ES360 by ES tuner matches the data can be read/written.
• We recommend to use the Mk5 gateway for ES16 / ES360. There are no filters for remote controlling
this ES systems.
