Research

Using and Creating an Online Survey

If you want to know the opinion of a group of people on a particular issue,


you may ask them to answer a set of questions to gather their attitudes, opinions, understanding,
satisfaction level, or action plans about the issue.
Survey – is a method of gathering information for the purpose of constructing an action plan. It
may be conducted using different approaches: telephone, mail (printouts), personal interview, or
online.
Online Survey – is a method of collecting information from a group of people using the internet.
TYPES OF SURVEYS
 Census – it aims to count an entire population.
 Household Survey – it extracts data about a household, such as gender and age.
 Opinion Poll – it tries to determine the opinion of a sample group, such as a group’s
choice of a favorite sports team or political candidate.

How to Create an Online Survey Form


Using your email address, log in to your account at drive.google.com. From
Google Drive, click New, More, Google Forms, and then Blank Form.

Design Your Form


1. Rename your form. Click Untitled Form and type a new name.
2. Change the look and feel your form. At the top, click the Color Palette to
change the background color or change the default theme. You can choose an
existing theme or upload photos to make your own theme.

Add and Edit Questions


To add a question to your form, click Add Question, which is the plus sign on
the right side of the screen, and select a question type. You can refer to the table on the
next page when choosing which question types would be most appropriate to use for your
survey.

Edit Questions
1. To duplicate a question, click the Duplicate (overlapping boxes) icon. To
modify the duplicated question, click it.
2. To delete a question, click the Delete (garbage can) icon.
3. To rearrange your questions or the options within a question, click the six dots,
located at the top of the question or beside the options, and drag them to where
you want them to be placed.

4. If you want people to see questions in random order, click the Settings (gear)
icon located at the upper-right side of your screen. Under the Presentation tab,
select Shuffle Question Order.
5. If you want them to see the options in random order, click the Show (three
dots) icon and select Shuffle Option Order.
Publish an Online Survey Form
To see how your form will look to others, click Preview.
Google Forms has several ways that allow you to share your form.
1. Send your form in an email along with a subject and message.
2. Copy and share a link (or short URL) of your form to others.
3. Embed your form on a website.
4. Share a link of your form via social media namely, Google+, Facebook, or
Twitter.
You can view responses in real time by clicking the Responses tab beside the
Questions tab. In the Responses tab, you can choose to view overall responses by
selecting Summary or the individual responses by selecting Individual.
To gather responses automatically, click the green Excel icon on the form or
select the More (three dots) icon and click Select response destination. This will create
a Google sheet that will automatically update whenever your survey receives a response.
You can access this sheet on your Google Drive. If you do not want to have your linked
Google Sheet automatically updated, select Unlinked form from the menu.
Before you share your survey, make sure that the Accepting responses setting
is enabled. If it is disabled, no one will be able to answer your survey. Disabling this
setting is handy when you are done gathering responses and do not want anyone who has
a copy of your link to access your survey and add to the data you already have. You can
download a copy of the final responses in Excel format by clicking the More button and
selecting Download responses (.csv). You can also choose to directly print the responses
from your browser by selecting Print all responses.
Communicating and Collaborating Using ICT Tools
Conducting an online survey does not end with data gathering. Data that has been
gathered will be studied and interpreted, and plans of action determined. This is when the
importance of communication and collaboration with others becomes necessary.

Audio and video conferencing is a type of communication with a person or a group


of people in another location using ICT tools.
Google Hangouts
You can use audio and video conferencing tools to share ideas and work with
others online. Google has an audio and video conferencing called Hangouts. You can use
it to start a chat conversation or a video call as well as make phone calls using your
internet connection.
To start using Hangouts, follow these steps.
1. Open your browser. Use Google Chrome for best results.
2. Type hangouts.google.com
3. Enter your Google Account information.
4. Click Sign In.
If you are using Hangouts to make a video call, remember that you need to have
a webcam as well as a headset or a microphone and speaker connected to your computer.
Without them, the person you are supposed to be talking to will not be able to see and
hear you.
To start a video call on Hangouts, follow these steps.
1. Open Hangouts.
2. Select a contact from the Hangouts list or search their name or email address.
Once you find that person, click his/her name. You can also start a group video
call by clicking New Conversation and entering your groupmates’ email
addresses or clicking their names from your Contacts list.
3. Click Video Call.
4. When you are done, click End Call.
Note that anyone in a video call can add more people after the video call starts.
Anyone invited to join the video call must have a Google Account.
Always remember to participate in video and audio conferences in a safe and
responsible manner.

Google Groups
An e-group is an online group that allows you to share ideas easily and work with
others. You can use Google Groups to create an online group for you classmates to do
tasks together by sending emails to each other and organizing meetings all in one place.
Google groups allows you as the administrator to choose a group type, name, and
description as well as determine who can join, post, and view the topics in the group.

To create a group, follow these steps.


1. Sign in to groups.google.com.
2. Near the top left, click Create group.
3. Enter the information needed and adjust the settings for the group.
4. Click Create.

Activity 1. Directions: Choose a topic that is interesting to young
people like you. Below are sample questions for some

Use Google Forms, Hangouts/Chat, and Groups to make a research about your
chosen topic. Report your results and share how you utilized the ICT tools in effectively
collaborating with your groupmates and successfully collecting data for your survey.
