National High School STUDENT LEARNING GUIDE IN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE

Quarter III, Week 4

Lesson 4: Natural Disasters (Part 2)

MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING COMPETENCY

No Code Available: Explain the causes and effects of natural disasters to human
and the environment.

In this set of activities, you should:

1. identify the effects of natural disasters to human and environment; and
2. determine the impacts of natural disaster.

WHAT YOU NEED TO REMEMBER?

Natural disasters can have long-term negative consequences beyond the immediate loss of
life and demolition of infrastructure. Often, an area impacted by a natural disaster will
show scars of the event for years to come. Natural disasters can have a life-altering impact
on the individuals and families fortunate enough to survive them.

Humanitarian
Crises. Climate change
and accompanying natural
disasters have created a large migrant
population, called climate refugees or
environmental migrants.

Public Health Issues are one of the most

pressing problems after any natural disaster. It
is often the case that facilities for water and
toilet hygiene are damaged or inoperable:
meaning that the safe disposal of human waste
quickly becomes a public health hazard.

Environmental Problems. In March 2011, a tsunami following the 9.0-magnitude Tōhoku earthquake in Japan caused
what came to be known as the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, where radioactive material was released in Japan
and into the Pacific Ocean. This was the largest nuclear disaster since Chernobyl, and it caused a cascade of issues in
the ecosystem and surrounding waters, spreading radioactive material through far-ranging ocean currents.

Infrastructural Damage. One of the most immediate and economically devastating concerns with natural disasters is
the damage to both public and private infrastructure. These events can cause billions of dollars in damages, and not all
governments are equipped to fund the process of post-disaster cleanup and rebuilding.

Impacts of Natural Disasters

1. Individual Impact
At the individual level, the impact can often be felt physically,
mentally and emotionally. After experiencing a natural disaster, many
individuals develop severe post-traumatic stress disorders or withdraw
into states of depression. Others develop negative associations with the
environment, in more developed nations; this can also lead to
significant population migrations.

2. Community Impact.

Communities that experience a natural disaster must also absorb the

impacts of these destructive events. Many local communities
lose so much in economic resources that recovery becomes
difficult, if not almost impossible.

3. Economic Impact
Recently in 2021, The number of fatalities due to Typhoon Odette has
reached 40. NDRRMC pegged the destructive typhoon's damage to
infrastructure and agriculture at P16.71 billion and more than P6.68
billion, respectively. It is also reported that Typhoon Odette destroyed
532,000 homes, leaving over 169,000 completely in ruins. The cost of
damage is estimated at P28.16 million. Over 4.4 million individuals from
38 provinces were affected after Odette pummeled the country for several
days.
