An overview –
Industry 4.0 refers to a new phase in the Industrial Revolution that focusses heavily
on interconnectivity, automation, machine learning and real-time(big) data.
Industry 4.0 also sometimes described as IIoT or Smart Manufacturing closely
associates physical production with operations on smart digital technology, machine
learning and big data to create a more holistic environment for companies relying
on manufacturing and supply chain management. This is where Industry 4.0 comes
into play.
Industry 4.0 isn’t just about investing in new technology and tools to improve
manufacturing efficiency—it’s about revolutionizing the way your entire business
operates and grows.
IIoT and Industry 4.0 – the real connection
One of the best ways to understand the concept of smart manufacturing better is to
think about how it could be applied to your business, or a business similar to your
business. Here are three use cases that can help you understand the value of
Industry 4.0 in a manufacturing operation:
1. Supply chain management and optimization—Industry 4.0 solutions give

businesses greater insight, control, and data visibility across their entire
supply chain. By leveraging supply chain management capabilities,
companies can deliver products and services to market faster, cheaper, and
with better quality to gain an advantage over less-efficient competitors.
2. Predictive maintenance/analytics—Industry 4.0 solutions give
manufacturers the ability to predict when potential problems are going to

asset management tasks such as asset transfers, disposals, reclassifications,

IoT in the energy production chain
• Physical process: such as the generation, transmission or consumption of

electricity.
• Measurement process: The sensors measure the statuses and outputs of
the physical process.
• Decision making process: independent and decentralized or in
coordination with other components.
• Action process: the decisions are sent back to the actuators positioned on
the network for implementation.
The majority of the IoT projects in the energy sector focus on applications oriented
towards demand. However, correctly used IoT brings infinite benefits for the
optimization of the entire chain of value, optimizing all of the phases and the
communication between them:
