Schedule 3 self-assessments
Integrate three self-assessment exams into your study timeline. These practice exams, such as NBME or
UWorld self-assessments, mimic the USMLE format and help evaluate your progress. Take the first self-
assessment at the beginning of your study period to establish a baseline. Schedule the second halfway
through your study timeline, and the third 5-7 days before the actual USMLE to reinforce pacing and timing.
Active recall
With the USMLE date marked, study period defined, self-assessments scheduled, and days off blocked, the
remaining days are designated as study days. Plan each study day by listing all the USMLE topics, ranking
them from weakest to strongest, and allocating 1-3 study days per topic. Utilize the chosen study
resources to review the assigned topics thoroughly on their respective study days.

Absorb
In the second step, your focus is on understanding the concepts rather than mindlessly copying notes or
reiterating information. Whether through lectures or online curricula, you aim to comprehend the
content and avoid wasting time on passive learning. This step involves actively engaging with the
material to establish a strong knowledge base.
Active Learning
The third step emphasizes active learning through practice questions and question banks. Similar to
practicing a musical instrument, active learning helps build muscle memory, improve technique, and
identify weaknesses. By consolidating information, refining understanding, and practicing for
performance, you prepare yourself for exam conditions and enhance your overall performance.
Revise
In this step, you revise the material by summarizing key points, using mnemonics, and creating
diagrams. It is the first time you actively write and engage with the content to reinforce your
weaknesses. This step aims to consolidate your understanding and solidify the information in your
memory, making it easier to recall later.
Active recall
The final step, active recall, focuses on long-term retention. By incorporating tools like Anki or
flashcards into your study process, you repeatedly review and recall the information over time. This
step ensures that the learned material remains accessible and ready to be retrieved even after several
months, ultimately enhancing your exam performance.
