Spanish presence in the Philippines

comprises 333 years from 1565 -

1898. The Philippines were claimed in

the name of Spain in 1521 by

Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese

explorer sailing for Spain who named

the islands after King Philip ll of

REVOLUTIONARY MOVEMENTS
❑ The first meeting of the katipuneros was held at the
Biak na Bato in San Miguel, Bulacan led by the father
of Katipunan, El supremo Andres Bonifacio.
❑ In August 1896, the katipuneros led by Andres
Bonifacio revolt by tearing up their cedulas
(residence certificates) which became a sign of
enslavement of the Filipinos to the Spaniards. It was
held in the sitio of Pugad Lawin in Balintawak. It is
known as the Cry of Pugad Lawin.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE KKK ON THE
INDEPENDENCE OF THE PHILIPPINES

The revolutionary movement of the katipuneros have weaken the


Spanish colonial power due to their frequent clashes and after
needing to focus resources on fighting another war across the
globe. After much resistance, the rebels were able to gather
control over most of the country's territory.

In the end, the rebels were able to declare independence on June


12,1898, in Cavite. After 333 years of colonial rule, the Philippines
was finally able to declare independence from the Spanish.
