Magnetic Separator
Operation Manual
This manual describes the proper procedure for installing, operating, and maintaining the Wet High
Intensity Magnetic Separator (WHIMS).
Careful attention to these requirements will assure the most efficient and dependable performance
of this WHIMS.
Caution
The external force on coil terminal/lead by cables shall not exceed 10 kg; if the force >10 kg,
please make the racks to support the cable and remove the weight of cable from coil leads.
Safety labels must be affixed to this product. Should the safety label(s) be damaged, dislodged or
removed, contact Eriez for replacement.
As with all equipment involving rotating parts, the WHIMS involves the potential for property
damage or serious personal injury if not treated with caution during all installation and maintenance
procedures. Equipment should be switch off and locked out during all procedures that involve
contact with the machine. Avoid pinch points and never operate with drive guards removed.
WHIMS incorporates exceptionally powerful magnetic circuits. Steel and iron tools and other
objects may be attracted suddenly and strongly to the magnetic field and create the risk of serious
pinch-type injuries once the coil is powered up. Keep all mild steel and iron tools and equipment
well away from the WHIMS all times while WHIMS is in operation. Avoid the situations in which
hands, fingers, or other body parts could become trapped between a steel or iron object and the
WHIMS.
Personnel using heart pacemakers should not service or operate this equipment. Such personnel
should remain at least 6’ (2 meters) from the magnetic roll at all times.
The water inside the coil and cooling water pipes has to be removed to avoid crack of coil once the
WHIMS is shut down for maintenance. One of method used is to use compressed air to blow out the
water inside the coils and cooling pipe.
The control cabinet door has to be closed all the time during the operation. Don’t attempt to open
the door of control cabinet to prevent an electric shock hazard.

1、The Scope of Application
The machine is an efficient equipment for processing fine, weakly magnetic minerals. It can
separate weakly magnetic minerals, moderately magnetic minerals from non-magnetic minerals and
can remove weakly magnetic impurities from the non-metallic minerals. Some typical applications
are shown below:
Ferrous metal ore: Recovery of specular hematite, hematite, limonite, siderite, chromite,
manganese ores, etc.
Nonferrous metal ore: Separation of fine embedded wolframite from quartz, magnetic pyrite from
cassiterite in a polymetallic sulfide ore, and cassiterite, wolframite from limonite, etc. Separation
of tungsten, wolframite from garnet, etc.
Rare metal: Recovery of titanium iron ore, iron and tantalum-niobium ore, lithium mica, monazite,
and phosphorus yttrium ore. Separation of lithium pyroxene from hornblende, tantalum from
niobium, iron ore from microlite, titanium iron ore from man-made rutile, and rutile from garnet
etc.
Nonmetalliferous ores: Purification of glass ceramics industrial raw materials like quartz, feldspar
and kaolin, Purification of high-temperature refractory silicates like andalusite & kyanite.
Elimination of iron, hornblende, mica, electrical stone, garnet and other harmful impurities, etc.
Other applications: Wastewater treatment for steel mills and power plants or removing catalyst
pollution from chemical raw materials.

As shown in Figure 1, when a DC current is applied to the excitation coil, a magnetic field is
formed in the separating chamber formed between upper and upper magnetic poles. The matrix is
magnetized in the magnetic field, and magnetic force is formed around the matrix. Every small
separation chamber in the vertical ring is full with matrix.
The magnetic force acted on extremely weak magnetic and non-magnetic particles is pretty small,
even smaller than pulp fluid force and its gravity. So the weak magnetic and non-magnetic particles
cannot be adsorbed on matrix passes through the matrix clearance into the tailings discharge hopper
and is treated as tailing. The magnetics adsorbed on matrix rotate as the vertical ring and enter the
cleaning area. By the gradually weakening magnetic field intensity and adjusting the stroke length
and frequency of mid jig, the magnetic force of weak magnetic and inter-growth particles is less
than the composite force of fluid force and particle gravity. These particles will be detached with

matrix and flow through the clearance of matrix into the tailings hopper and become tailings. And
the separation effect is improved further.
To the strong magnetic particles, the magnetic force is greater than the composite force of fluid
force and its gravity. these particles still adsorb on matrix and rotate with the separation ring, move
away the magnetic field and enter the discharge area. Flush the magnetics by the air/water flushing
device from the matrix in to the concentrate hopper. these particles become the concentrate. And
finally the effective separation among the different magnetism particles will be obtained.
The pulp moves up and down in separation chamber as the drum moves up and down in the
reciprocating box. The pulsating force disperse the particles in the separation process, and eliminate
the entrainment of non-magnetic particles effectively. So the concentrate grade will be improved
greatly.
What’s more, the pulp pulsating movement is good to preventing the matrix blockage. the
appropriate height and stable pulp level vital to keep good enough separation effect and make the
pulsating mechanism work well.
3、Supplemental Equipment
The controlling box use the high frequency power technology; power utilization coefficient is over
90%. The controlling box is energy saving, environment protection and little affected by electric
grid. The power system is safe and convenient maintenance due to the use of advantage overseas
electric components design. The electric-magnetic compatibility is superb and performance is stable.
The main transformer and controlling circuit both use patent technology, performance is stable and
power saving effect is outstanding. All heating elements utilize the water cooling, and can work for
a long time in full load. The controlling box has automatic cutting off and break down alarm system,
including open-phase, over current, over heating and water pressure. Industrial Ethernet interface
and standard signals (0-5V, 0-10V or 4-20mA) can be provided as the consumer requirement and
can use jointly with industrial automatic system.

Outlet
As figure 2 shows, the filter consists of shell, filter plate, gland bush and bolt. The filter plate is
made of stainless steel plate by punching holes.
Working principle: the flush water feed into the shell, penetrate the filter plate, and flow out in the
other side and act as the concentrate flushing water. Prevent the impurities in water choking the
discharge device and matrix. The big particles are blocked on the filter plate, so flushing water plate
should be cleaned periodically to clean the impurity particles.
Filter cleaning step: Cut off the water inlet, open the discharge valve, clean all the impurities, lose
the screwed bolts and gland bush, take out the filter plate, clean the shell and filter plate.
The merit of the filter plate: Simple structure, convenient dismantlement, reliability and stability.

As figure3 shows, cooling water filter consist of shell, filtering grid, upper cover and valve.
Filtering plate is made of stainless grid. Working principle:cooling water are feed in shell
tangentially and rotate around the shell, the water penetrates the filtering grid and flow out
through the upper outlet and become the cooling water. The blocked impurities are blocked under
the cone bottom to attain the filtering effect and protect the exciting coil from blockage. So the
filtering grid should be cleaned periodically. Cleaning method: open the valve of impurity
discharge, discharge the impurities from the bottom. The merit of the filter: Simple structure,
large capacity, stably working for a long time.
The foundation of SSS-I-3000 vertical ring high gradient magnetic separator not only bears its
gravity, but also bears the vibrating force generated by pulsating. So the equipment should be
installed on strengthened foundation.

2、 Reinforced concrete structure or steelwork can be used as the equipment foundation.

6、Commissioning
Open the cooling water, check whether the water flow and pressure reach requirements.
1、Clean the iron materials and other wastes on or near the equipment.
2、Rotate the vertical ring for more than one circle by rotating the blade of reducer motor to
make sure the vertical ring with no abnormal noise and check and no obstacles on the equipment.
3、Make sure that the oil adding point has been syringed.
4、Run the motors of separation vertical ring and pulsating mechanism for a period of time.
1、Make sure the cooling water is opened and the water flows steadily
2、Start the separation ring only. Turn on the coil excitation power and gradually increase the
current to 100 A and run for 5 minutes. The current should be gradually increased again, first to 200
A, then to 300 A, etc. until 1000 A is reached, run at each current for 5 minutes to observe whether
the vertical ring operation remains normal or not.
3、Start jigs, run the machine for eight hours at 600-800A, stop and check whether there are
any loose bolts fixing medium.
4、Test the water-air discharging device.
7、Operation routine
Turn on cooling water and the concentrate flushing water→turn on the power→back up→Tailing
jigs-middling jig→vertical separation ring-blower→Exciting magnetic field (adjust the current for
exciting magnetic field) →Feed

jig—backup-shut-down power
Note: the vertical ring should rotate for over 5 minutes after stopping the exciting magnetic field, in
order to flush all the ferromagnetic particles. And then the power cutting off is allowed. At last, turn
down the cooling water and the concentrate flushing water.

2、Laying the iron subjects near to the exciting coil or separation vertical ring is prohibited.
3、Screw down the bolts fixing the matrix after the new equipment running for two days.
Observe whether bolts become loosen in every shift. If there is loosen bolt, stop the
machine and deal with it to prevent damaging the matrix box and separation ring.
4、Stop the machine with pulp feeding often cause the matrix box choking, so feeding must be
stopped and then stop the machine. Stopping the machine with pulp feeding is forbidden.
While for emergency, shut down the power, and then stop feeding immediately afterwards.
5、After stopping exciting magnetic field, rotate the separation ring for over 5 minutes. After
flushing the particles retained, turning down the flushing water and stopping machine are
allowed.
6、Check the flow rate of cooling water whether is normal or not, and drained water
temperature should not over 70℃.
7、Check whether the flow rate of concentrate flushing water is normal 2 times every shift.
And the filter of flushing water should be cleaned every shift.
8、Prevent the particle of which the diameter is over 1 mm
9、When the controlling box alarms, check the cooling water pressure, flow rate, exciting coil
temperature, transformer temperature, input and output current, fuse protector etc. in time.

7.3 Operation Parameter
The operation parameters include exciting magnetic field current (A), pulse stroke length
(mm), pulse stroke frequency (times/min), pulp flow rate (m3/h) and flushing water rate
(m3/h)
7.4 Parameters Affect Separation Index
1、Pulp level
If the pulp level is too low, the pulsating can’t work, the concentrate grade will be decreased and the
tailing grade will be increased.
2、Pulsating force
Increase the stroke length or the frequency, concentrate grade will be increased in a specific range,
while the recovery varied a little. But the stroke length is too high, the tailing grade will be
increased, and recovery will be decreased.
3、Magnetic field
The higher the magnetic field intensity, the lower the tailing grade, the higher the recovery, but the
concentrate grade will be decreased. While, the lower magnetic field intensity, the higher the
concentrate grade, but the tailing grade will be increased and recovery will be decreased.
4、Matrix
If the matrix is choked or unclean, the separation will be affected. The matrix should be cleaned or
replace in time.
5、Vertical separation ring
If increase the rotate velocity of vertical separation ring, the tailing grade will be decreased,
recovery will be increased, but the concentrate recovery will be decreased. While, if decrease the
rotate velocity, the concentrate grade will be improved.
8、Equipment Maintenance
Notification
1、In the period of stopping running, if the environment temperature may below 0℃, the
cooling water should be drained, or dry the cooling water with blowing compressive air if
necessary to prevent coil expanding and fracture due to water freezing.
2 、 In order to keep the equipment to run safely, the customer should ask the
corresponding operator check the equipment regularly and sign the equipment checking table

(Figure 3).
8.1 Lubrication Rules and Regulations
Check whether the mechanical parts are normal before starting up. Syringe the lubrication grease
in the positions need lubrication. To the lubrication positions and lubrication grease type, please
refer the Table 3.

the valves are easy to be worn. Their service life is only half year, please replace in time.
8.7 Controlling Box
The controlling box should be keep dry and ventilated. If the controlling bow is wet, it should be
dried, run for a period of time under low exciting current. Until it is dried out, use the high exciting
current is allowed.
8.8 Equipment Operation and Maintenance
1、In the process of operation, check whether the components is abnormal and there is
abnormal noise. Observe the meter, its value should not be over the limit.
2、If there is abnormal phenomenon or some break down, stop emergency and then check and
fix seriously.
3、Prevent the big particles flowing into the machine to avoid the damage to the machine.
4、Keep the machine integrated and maintain the work place tidy.
5、Avoid taking iron substance near to the machine.
8.9 Blower
Prevent other substance sucking in blower, if there it is, stop the blower and clean in time, or it is
easy to break down the blower.
8.10 Exciting Coil
Make sure that the cooling water flows continuously from every outlet. Determine the water
temperature regularly, the temperature should not be over the upper limit. Or the exciting coil
will burn down. Clean the scale formation in the exciting coil regularly.

9、Electric-magnetic Performance
9.1 Finite Element Modelling

The magnetic part of vertical ring high gradient magnetic separator is the center to generate and
provide the magnetic field. The magnetic induced intensity distribution affects the separation
indexes. So magnetic induced intensity distribution in separation chamber with finite element
modeling had been performed in the magnetic part design. The magnetic induced intensity
distribution has been improved by magnetic part and exciting coil adjustment. Improve the
separation indexes of equipment based on not increasing power consumption.
