ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

1. Give brief answers for the following with respect to synchronous machines. [20]

(a) Explain why the short circuit characteristic curve is linear.

(b) Differentiate unsaturated and saturated synchronous reactance. Which is preferred for higher
accuracy in predicting the voltage regulation?
(c) Which method to find the voltage regulation gives better result? Why?
(d) What are the assumptions made in Potier method and how these affect the accuracy of the
method.
(e) Explain what is modified air gap line with reference to OCC.
(f) What is meant by ”Synchronous machine is floating on the busbars”?
(g) What conditions determine the instant of synchronization?
(h) Why is it desirable to short circuit the dc field when a synchronous motor is started?
(i) How does a synchronous motor adjust itself to an increasing load?
(j) Can an unloaded synchronous motor can be made to act as a capacitor or an inductor?Justify.

2. Consider a synchronous generating machine connected to infinite bus with constant mechanical input.
If the field excitation is increased from low to high value, discuss how the armature current changes
with a help of phasor diagram. Give a sketch of armature current versus field current and explain.
[10]

3. Explain the plot of the torque-speed characteristics of an Induction machine with variation in rotor
resistance. Explain how the variation in rotor resistance affects the maximum and starting torque.[10]

4. Differentiate capacitor start IM and resistance split IM. Which is more advantageous and why? [10]
5. The open and short circuit test data on a 3 phase,2.5 MVA,6.6 kV,star connected alternator are:

If (A) 16 20 25 32 45
VOC (kV) 4.4 5.5 6.6 7.7 8.8

With the armature short circuited and full load current flowing, the field current is 18 A. When the
machine is supplying full load current at zero power factor at rated voltage, the field current is 45 A.
(i) Draw OCC ,SCC and ZPF (ii) Find the leakage reactance (iii)Field current and Voltage regulation
for the load with 0.8 pf lag using the leakage reactance. [14]

6. A 400 MVA,22 kV Synchronous generator is tested for OCC and SCC. The following results are
obtained from the extrapolated curves. If = 1120A, VOC = 22 kV and ISC = 13.2 kA. At If cor-
responding to ISC = Irated it is found that VOC (air-gap line) = 24.2 kV (line). Find (i) Saturated
synchronous reactance (ii) SCR (iii) Unsaturated synchronous reactance to VOC = 22.4 kV on air gap
line. [8]

7. A 1500 kVA, star connected, 6.6 kV salient pole synchronous motor has per phase Xd =23.2Ω and
Xq = 14.5Ω. Neglect armature resistance. Calculate the excitation emf when the motor is supplying
rated load at 0.8 pf lead. What maximum load the motor can supply without loss of synchronism if
the excitation is cut off? [6]

8. A 3-phase induction motor with 6-poles at 50 Hz running on full load develops an useful torque of
180 Nm when the rotor emf makes 60 complete cycles per minute. Calculate the shaft power output.
If the mechanical torque lost in friction and that for core-loss is 15 Nm. Assume total stator loss to
be 600W Calculate (i) the copper loss (ii) motor input (iii) efficiency. [8]

9. A three phase slip ring induction motor , 6 poles star connected, 0.15 MW, 3 kV, 50 Hz has turns
ratio(stator to rotor) as 3.6. The rotor resistance per phase is 0.2 ohms and leakage inductance is 4
mH. Find (i)the starting torque and starting current ( when the slip rings are short circuited)(ii) the
external resistance to be added to reduce the starting current to 25% of that starting current when it
was short circuited and also the required starting torque at this condition. [8]

10. A 3 phase 50 kW, 50 Hz induction motor has 4 poles with delta connected winding. The winding has
24 conductors per slot. Number of slots designed is 60. Line current(rms value ) is 48 A. Find the
fundamental of the mmf wave of phase A when the current is passing through its maximum value.
