    Can is used to ask and give permission: Can I go with you?

    (interrogative) You can watch TV after doing homework. (affirmative) You cannot (cant) play in the rain. (negative)

    Look at the pictures and write sentences with can or cant to describe what students are allowed or not to do in the classroom, then make a red circle around things they cannot do: Smoke Ask questions if they dont understand Talk on the cell phone Do homework in class Leave the classroom during break time Have a snack in the classroom Take the school bus after class

    Can is used to talk about knowledge or skills: I can swim 40 laps without stopping. (affirmative) Sue cannot (cant) speak English. (negative) Can your sister play the piano? (interrogative)

    Look at the pictures and write about what they can / cant do: Ernest cant play the piano, but he Melanie cant ride a horse, but she Oscar .. a motorcycle, but he . Patricia dance, but she . Alfred sew, but he Grandpa cant understand German, but he Greek.

    Ask people if its possible for them to do some things: Melanie Ernest Oscar Sylvia / arrive early tomorrow Jeannie / take the bus downtown Your father / take the kids after lunch Tell people its impossible for you to do some things and explain why, as in the model: I / open the door I cant open the door because I lost the Alfred Patricia Grandpa key. Sue / get a new job Arnold / paint the wall Roger and Lucy / travel next vacation You / buy a new car

    Can is used in the meaning of its possible for: Sue can help you after class. (affirmative) Sorry, I cant wait for you. (negative) Can Sally bring the cake? (interrogative)

    Can is used to ask a favor: Can you open the window? Can you take me to the airport?

    Formation: We use can / cannot for all persons. The verb that comes after can / cannot is always in the infinitive without to. To ask questions with can, we put it before the subject. Examples: You can do it later. (affirmative) You cannot (cant) stay here. Number the pictures above according to the following sentences: 1Can you watch the baby for a while?

    (negative) Can you leave after six? (interrogative) Pay attention to this hint: When theres a word with negative sense in the sentence, we must use can instead of cannot: Nobody can play the piano as well as you do. Underline the mistakes then correct them: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5)

    2- Can you turn off the TV? 3- Can you open the door for me? 4- Can you take my luggage? 5- Can you do the vacuuming when you finish doing the dishes? 6- Can you put the clothes in the washer? 7- Can you help me with these books? 8- Can you hand me the remote control? 9- Can you feed the dog? 10- Can you hand the clothes in the cloth line?

    Now look at this: Can = may (permission) Can = be able to ( knowledge or skill) Can = its possible (possibility) Can = please (favor) Now look at the sentences and make the changes in order to replace can for the correct word or expression, preserving the same meaning. Number 1 is done for you.

    1- Can you play the piano? Are you able to play the piano? 2- Susan can take my place if you need. 3- Jeremy cant eat sweets before dinner 4- Can I go out? 5- Can you lend me your pen? 6- Can you speak English? 7- I can give you a ride home. 8- Sorry, I cannot come here later. 9- The kids cant eat in class.
