Can is used to ask and give permission: Can I go with you?

(interrogative) You can watch TV after doing homework. (affirmative) You cannot (cant) play in the rain. (negative)

Look at the pictures and write sentences with can or cant to describe what students are allowed or not to do in the classroom, then make a red circle around things they cannot do: Smoke Ask questions if they dont understand Talk on the cell phone Do homework in class Leave the classroom during break time Have a snack in the classroom Take the school bus after class

Can is used to talk about knowledge or skills: I can swim 40 laps without stopping. (affirmative) Sue cannot (cant) speak English. (negative) Can your sister play the piano? (interrogative)

Formation: We use can / cannot for all persons. The verb that comes after can / cannot is always in the infinitive without to. To ask questions with can, we put it before the subject.
