What is an Actuator?

Actuators are mechanical or electro-mechanical devices that permit controlled and occasionally
constrained positioning or movement when they are activated electrically, manually, or by a variety of
fluids.Hardware component that changes a physical parameter in response to a controller command
signal.

Actuators primarily require a control signal and an energy supply. The actuator takes energy from the
source in response to a control signal to create a mechanical motion. A fixed mechanical or electronic
system, a human, a software-based system, such as a printer driver, or a robot control system can all be
used as the control system.

Examples of actuators include electric motors, stepper motors, polymer, screw jacks, solenoid and

hydraulic cylinders.

Types of Actuators
Actuator types also vary depending on motions, power configurations, styles and sizes depending on
the application.

Mechanical Actuators

The mechanical actuator is a device that uses a power source to attain physical movement.
These actuators are important & available nearly on each automated machine. The power
sources used in these actuators are electric current, pneumatic & hydraulic which are operated
manually or turned ON/OFF through an automated system.

Mechanical actuators depend on the interactions of the structural elements that make them up,
such as gears and rails or pulleys and chains. Among the benefits are high dependability, ease
of use, simpler maintenance, and improved positioning precision.
Hydraulic Actuators

Hydraulic actuators have a cylinder or fluid motor that uses hydraulic power to generate mechanical
motion, which in turn leads to linear, rotatory or oscillatory motion. Given the fact that liquids are nearly
impossible to compress, a hydraulic actuator can exert a large force. When the fluid enters the lower
chamber of the actuator’s hydraulic cylinder, pressure inside increases and exerts a force on the bottom
of the piston, also inside the cylinder.

The pressure causes the sliding piston to move in a direction opposite to the force caused by the spring
in the upper chamber, making the piston move upward and opening the valve.

Pneumatic Actuators

A pneumatic actuator uses pressurized gas or compressed air to form a controlled movement. These
actuators are versatile &can be modified to use in any project. The main advantage of this actuator is
very simple to utilize and is a secure alternative to both hydraulic & electric actuators as they do not
need electricity or ignition to operate.
