LACK OF EDUCATION

 Sihah: As I was analysing this play, It seems to me that, they are displaying rape as a which
is a form of sexual assault as a small deal. I said this because it shows that Rebecca and
Jane are in shock when they acknowledge that Lynne have never even once experience
getting rape in her entire life as if rape is a normal thing to occur to every woman. So now the
real question is why does this happen? Why would they normalise something that shouldn't
be normalised? Well first of all, th is probably because of the lack of education regarding the
harm of sexual assault in the society. As stated in the play, Jane, one of the characters
mentioned ‘that It's how they're raised: they think it comes with the equipment.’ which refer to
a norm on how guys are raised with no knowledge about how they should be responsible for
protecting women, what is sexual assault and why they should respect women as women
have the same human’s right as they do and not the one who brings harm to women. As the
famous saying said ‘educate your son not protect your daughter’, which is regarding the fact
that instead of worrying about their daughter's safety, parents should pay attention to
educating their son to not be a sexual offender. First and foremost, that phrases exists
because of the fact that instead of blaming the offender which tend to be a guy, people
oftentimes switch the blame on the victim, women, by asking question such as ‘what was she
wearing at the time’, why’d she went out that late” “ she’s asking for it because she wore that
outfit” .. this shows how uneducated majority of the society are about the responsibility for
sexual aggression and violence where it rightly belongs: on the perpetrator, rather than the
victim. So, society should change their narrow mindset and educate themselves on the fact
that instead of restricting women's freedom, why don't we teach boys to be better and value
women’s dignity.
 sihah: As we read this story, aren't we curious about Why wouldnt the rape victims lodge a
police report? Well, there are numbers of reason on why women don’t come forward about
sexual assault. One of the reasons is because of the disbelief in police and crime
investigation. This happened over the fact that a lot of rapists don’t spend a single day in jail.
So, why rapist isn’t in jail well, it has been argued that “rape cases” aren’t seen as a serious
crime. Some people have this idea that if the crime didn’t involve a gun or brutal force, it is not
worthy of reporting it which is totally absurd because it gives the chance for sexual offenders
to get off scot free. Well, back to my point about rapists who didn't spend a single day in jail,
so victims may have the mindset that what's the point of going to the police station or even
more to the court if the results were just going to disappoint them? With that in mind,
authorities must do a better job in handling crimes regarding sexual assault. An Example of
incompetent authorities, in this story that we can witness is the existence of so called “rape
buses” which is a bus with curtains that is popular as a rape spot, well frankly speaking if the
authorities have done enough job to handle issues about rape culture that has been spread
widely, such things as rape busses wouldnt exist, the bus would’ve been fined and were
ordered to stop operating. As we know originally busses is use as public transport with no
other intention but in this play, Jane mentioned that those type of busses with curtains has its
adaptive re-use as a popular rape spot. A public which means that a lot of people would hop
on it every day, so it is impossible if none of them has ever made a report regarding the issue,
so it is safe that this thing has not been diminished yet because authorities aren't paying
much attention to it. So, are you all with me on the fact that rape culture continues to happen
because of incompetent authorities?
 Now let’s talk about why when Rebecca was gang rape in the bus, out of 6 guys in the bus
that can protect her only her friend decided to help her, so why the other guys have such
desire to rape her. As for me, i believe that we can relate this situation with the fact that
pornography plays a big role in rape culture. We can assume that these guys get the idea of
rape from watching pornography. Within porn, sex and violence are interconnected which can
train people to be aroused by violent sex. This sends the incorrect message to the viewer that
this is what ‘normal sex’ looks like. A lot of porn is explicitly ‘rape porn’ which portrays the
incorrect message that people enjoy rape and that sexual violence is normal. So, it can be
said that those guys learn about gang rape in pornography and decided to try it in real life and
causes harm to women. So, do any of you also believe that exposure to pornography play big
role in the rise of rape culture?
