Module 6 (LAB)

This document provides an overview of Module 6 of the MECH610/Pneumatics & Electro-Pneumatics course. The module focuses on sequential circuit applications in pneumatic systems. The learning outcomes are for students to develop complex mechatronic circuitry using pneumatic and electro-pneumatic hardware and software, conduct simulations to analyze system output, and communicate results effectively. The module presents sample problems on coordinated and sequential motion control involving the distribution of workpieces and lifting of boxes using pneumatic cylinders and control circuits. References on pneumatics and supplementary reading materials and instructional videos are also provided.

MECH610/PNEUMATICS & ELECTRO-PNEUMATICS

Module 6 (LAB) – Sequential Circuit in Pneumatic System

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this module, students are expected to:
C4. Use pneumatic and/or electro-pneumatic hardware and software to develop
complex mechatronic circuitry.
C5. Conduct simulations, analyze system output and formulate conclusions using
pneumatic and/or electro-pneumatic core theories and principles.
C7. Communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
C8. Lead multiple groups and projects with decision making responsibilities.

Specifically,
 Coordinated Motion Control
 Sequential Motion Control

Practical Applications
(Sample Problems taken from: Introduction to Pneumatics from FESTO Didactic)

Distribution of workpieces

1. Define conditions using abbreviated notation

2. Draw circuit diagram

Problem: The arriving workpieces are distributed to four conveyors by means of a

switching section. Shifting to the required position is initiated by pushbuttons and must
be possible in any sequence.

Lifting device for boxes
1. Draw circuit diagram
2. Number elements in circuit diagram
3. Construct motion control diagram

Problem: The boxes arrive on a roller conveyor and are lifted by cylinder 1.0, cylinder .0
pushes the boxes onto the second roller conveyor. Cylinder 2.0 shall not return until
cylinder 1.0 has reached the retracted position.

Laboratory Exercise:
1. Draw circuit diagram
2. Number elements in circuit diagram
3. Construct motion control diagram

Problem: Sheet metal is to be beaded on a pneumatically actuated bending rig. After it

has been clamped, the piece is initially bent by a double-acting cylinder 1.0 and
subsequently bent into the finished form by cylinder 2.0. The sequence is initiated
manually by a push button. The circuit must be so constructed that each time a start
signal is given a full cycle is completed.
