WHAT THINGS WILL HINDER YOUR PRAYERS? MESSAGE OF THE WEEK a) Undisciplined thoughts - we must bring them into subjection and make them obedient to Christ. (2 Cor 10:4,5) (Read prayerfully and share with friends & neighbours) b) Feeling unworthy (1 John 1:9) c) Self-deception (1 Corinthians 3:18) PRAYER AND FASTING (Part 2): d) Asking a miss – to satisfy rust, envy, for greedy pleasure, (James 4:1-3) WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF PRAYER? e) Wrong motives (Matthew 6:5-8) 1 Timothy 2:1 states, "I exhort, therefore, that first of all, supplication, f) Merciless and unforgiving spirit (Matthew 5:7, 23,24, 18:21-35) prayers, intercession, and giving of thanks, be made for all men". g) Pride – God distances himself from the proud (Psalm 138:6) A. Supplication - Meaning to "beseech, beg, plead, or to appeal to h) Sin and iniquity (Isaiah 59:1-4, Proverbs 28:13) God". i) Bitterness (Hebrews 12:15-17) 1. Daniel made supplication for the nation of Israel; (Daniel 9). j) Unbelief (James 1:5-7) 2. We are to make supplication for all saints (Ephesians 6:10). k) Improper relationships (1 Peter 3:7). B. PRAYERS: Any type of communication between God and man. It could include waiting before God in silence, making petitions of Him, Who can participate in prayer: seeking His face, and even calling upon His name. 1. Our strength is renewed as we wait on the Lord (Isaiah 40:31) 1. An individual (Matthew 6:5-7) 2. Jabez made requests of the Lord (1 Chronicles 4:9). 2. Two or three (Matthew 18:18-20) 3. God prospers those who seek Him (2 Chronicles 26:5) 3. The entire church (Acts 2:42; 4:24) 4. Those that call upon His name shall be saved (Romans 10:13). C. INTERCESSIONS: When we argue in favour of a person or cause FASTING: before God. Ezekiel 22:30. a) Fasting is designed to discipline the body and to quiet the soul so that 1. Moses interceded for the nation of Israel (Exodus 32:10-14). one can hear from God. 2. Abraham for Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 18:22-33) b) The scriptures show us that prayer and fasting are linked together. 3. Jesus, for those who crucified Him (Luke 23:34). (Read: Acts 13:3, 14:23, Neh 1:4, Ezra 8:24, Daniel 9:3, Joel 1:4) 4. Those that call upon His name shall be saved (Hebrews 7:5) c) Fasting does not "buy" us anything from God, but it aligns us with His D. GIVING OF THANKS: Coming before God with an "attitude of purpose and will. gratitude" d) What does it mean to FAST? Fasting is deliberately turning from food 1.
