Abstract- This project presents the design and implementation of Alcohol and
Drowsiness Detection with Engine Locking for cars using the sensors and
Arduino UNO as the MCU (Master Control Unit). The system will continuously
monitor level of alcohol concentration in alcohol detection sensor and
drowsiness and thus turn off the engine of the vehicle if the alcohol
concentration is above the threshold level or sleeps. The project provides an
efficient solution to control accidents due to drunk driving or sleeping.
Keywords- Arduino UNO, MQ-2 sensor, Eye blink sensor, LED, Buzzer, DC Motor.
1. Introduction
Have you ever heard about any accident on roads, in particular National Highways, occurring
due to drinking and driving? You must have. Have you ever considered that automobile
accidents might also be caused by a driver who is drowsy?Well, let me tell you that around
72000 accidents occur the INDIA each year due to drowsy driving alone. Drowsy driving is
indeed a silent killer. As a result, the goal of my study was to avoid accidents caused by driving
while inebriated. According to the current situation, drunk driving is the cause of the majority of
road accidents. Drivers who consume alcohol are not in a stable state, and as a result, reckless
driving happens on highways, endangering the lives of everyone on the road, including the
driver. The magnitude of unsafe driving knows no bounds. In India, the law now prohibits
drivers from drinking and driving so that the fee can deter people from doing so.Effective
surveillance of drunk drivers, on the other hand, may pose a problem to police officers and road
safety officials. This is due to citizens' inherent incapacity to be present in the same place at the
same time. Each manual attempt aimed at curbing drink-driving is undermined by enforcement
authorities' limited capabilities. As a result, an alcohol detection device that can operate without
regard for place or time is required. The Indian Ministry of Statistics reported thousands of road
accidents in 2016. Despite the fact that the research said that speeding is the leading cause of
these accidents, it is reasonable to assume that practically all of the incidents are due to the
driver's unstable condition, which is caused by their being intoxicated before driving. The
investigation done by the Planet Health Organization in 2008 shows that concerning 50%-60%
of traffic accidents square measure associated with drink-driving. Moreover,WHO information
on road traffic deaths disclosed 1.25 million traffic deaths were recorded globally in 2013 with
the low- and middle-income countries having higher fatality rates per a 100K population (24.1%
and 18.4% respectively).
2. Literature review
Almost all drivers, particularly business and serious duty trucks drivers interact in drink-driving,
which may result in accident. Bharat sets a legal limit of30mg/100mL blood alcohol
concentration (BAC), any level higher than that's same to be ineligible. The BAC represents the
quantity of alcohol in a very small quantity of blood. It's measured as either grams of alcohol per
metric capacity unit of blood or milliliters of blood, (mg/ml, utilized in a lot of Europe). For
BAC level from 0.4 to 0.6, drivers feel dazed/confused or otherwise disoriented, and it's typically
not safe for a driver to drive a vehicle beneath such condition. Furthermore, BAC levels of 0.7 to
0.8 significantly impair a driver's mental, bodily, and sensory abilities. A driver is inert and
incapable of driving at this point, and a BAC level of 0.2 to 0.3 continues to be unsafe, but the
motive force remains. As a result, a system that can limit the amount of road accidents caused by
drunk driving is required.
The applications of this project are easily visible. The Alcohol and drowsiness detection with
engine locking system can be implemented in any 4-wheelers. The Alcohol and drowsiness
detection with engine locking system can help prevent accidents due to drunk driving or
sleeping. The Alcohol and drowsiness detection with engine locking system can be very helpful
for police. The Alcohol and drowsiness detection with engine locking system prove automatic
safety system for cars and other vehicles
3. Result
The Alcohol Detection and Drowsiness alert with Engine Locking system helps to reduce
accidents which are occurring due to drunk driving or falling asleep. MQ-2 sensor detects the
presence of alcohol in the surroundings. The sensor provides output on the basis of the
concentration of the alcohol, if the alcohol concentration is higher the conductivity of MQ-2
sensor increases which in turn gives the reading to ARDUINO. If the reading is greater than the
threshold level, ARDUINO will stop the DC motor. Output of the sensor is connected to the A1,
A2 of the Arduino board. In this project we use one LCD display to pin no 13 to 8 of the
Arduino to display all the messages.
Here we use slow speed motor, which is connected to the pin no 6 and 7 of the Arduino board
using LM 293 motor driver chip. The Arduino-Uno development board is powered by 5-12V
DC supply. Arduino-board is used to power the sensors. Arduino-board is used to power MQ-2
sensor and IR Sensor. Alcohol concentration is determined by the help of MQ-2 sensor. It is
made up of a switch that is used to turn on the system. It's similar to starting an automobile
engine. The DC motor is used to represent the automobile ignition system, which is turned off
when alcohol is consumed. The MQ-2 alcohol sensor detects the presence of alcohol when it
exceeds a certain threshold value. The value is then transmitted to the Arduino, which will sound
the buzzer and switch on the light to alert surrounding drivers and shut off the ignition system if
the specified limit is exceeded. Drowsiness or closing of eyes is determined by the help of IR
sensor. Infrared light is emitted by an IR LED. The IR receiver is used to receive the reflected
infrared rays from the eye. If the eye is closed then the rays are not reflected from the eye and the
output of IR receiver is high otherwise the IR receiver output is low. The IR led emits infrared
light, which falls on the photodiode, creating a potential difference across the photodiode. The
signal will be sent directly to the microcontroller for interfacing (e.g. buzzer). The driver is
deemed sleepy when this output remains high for an extended amount of time (threshold). As a
result, a buzzer can be sounded to rouse the driver up. In case of the driver won’t get up from
sleep the ignition system will be turned off. Display Part will acquire the prepared signal and
display the information to users on an LCD display.
4. Conclusion
We've provided a competent and practical technique to deal with and construct a smart system
for automobiles in order to reduce the amount of accidents caused by drunk driving or napping
while driving. Vehicle security is dynamically vital, as people are beginning to realise. The goal
of the next level of this structure is to control the consequences of alcohol abuse. This device
enhances individual security, demonstrating a significant advancement in the automobile
industry in terms of reducing setbacks caused by driving.
