CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

Rationale of the Study

Energy is considered a source for the future and plays a pivotal role in its socio-economic

development (Mboumbone and Njomo, 2016). The world’s energy demand can theoretically be

exponentially exceeded by renewable energy resources, which have enormous potential. As a

result, these resources will make up a sizeable portion of the future global energy portfolio,

which is currently heavily focused on developing its supply of renewable energy resources

(Ellabban et al., 2014). Although access to electricity has improved in the Philippines, the

country still faces an energy insecurity problem (Taniguchi, 2019).The nation is heavily

dependent on coal power and large-scale transmission lines to fulfill its increasing demand for

electricity while attempting to supply electricity , rural areas have lagged significantly compared

to the city. This method has led to higher electricity prices, unequal distribution of power

between urban and rural areas. The use of sustainable renewable resources can lessen reliance on

imported fuels and susceptibility to volatile fuel prices and exchange rates. On the other hand,

renewable energy has many benefits, but it’s not always sunny when it comes to renewable

energy the renewable energy has high upfront costs, intermitted, have storage capabilities, have

geographic limitations, and aren’t always 100% carbon-free (Thoubboron, 2022)

In Mantalongon, Dalaguete, Cebu, electric consumers experienced high costs of

electricity. According to Erram (2022), electricity bills in Cebeco 1 went up from 12.92 PHP per

kilowatt-hour to 13.75 PHP kwh. As a result, a lot of consumers were not able to pay leading to a

power outage. As energy bills continue to rise, there is a growing imperative to explore
alternative and sustainable sources of power to alleviate this financial burden. Hence, some find

an alternative source of energy like solar panels, making people's lives more convenient and

having a low cost of living. This research introduces an innovative approach to this issue by

investigating the potential of portable fans as renewable energy sources and their role in

mitigating the challenges posed by high electricity costs. However, renewable energy sources do

not apply to some areas due to their geographical limitations.

This problem has long been studied to help rural areas facing severe electricity crises due

to a lack of investment in the power sector. Moreover, many studies have been conducted to

address having limited sources and high cost of electricity. One study was about the potential of

agricultural residue as an alternative energy source. Based on the study, the agricultural residue

has the potential to generate electricity from biomass, a total of around 1700 MW of electricity

(Uzair et al., 2019). Another study was about converting biomass into convenient energy-

containing substances. In addition, according to Rather and Bano (2019), biofuels generated

from non-food crops, like aquatic weeds, have great potential to meet part of our future energy

demand. Another study explores the potential of charcoal briquettes from Madan wood wastes.

The results revealed that Madan wood wastes could be considered as a potential renewable raw

material to manufacture briquettes as an alternative energy source (Kongprasert, Wangphanich,

& Jutilarptavorn, 2019). However, no studies yet have been made discussing the potential of a

portable fan as an alternative source of energy.

The objective of this study is to investigate the potential of portable fans as renewable

energy sources. In an era marked by a growing concern for sustainability and the need to reduce

our dependence on non-renewable energy, this research aims to explore the feasibility of

harnessing energy from portable fans. By conducting a thorough analysis of their design,
efficiency, and energy generation capabilities, we seek to determine if these common household

devices can be transformed into sustainable power sources. In addition, this study will not only

contribute to our understanding of alternative energy solutions but also pave the way for

innovative applications of everyday technology in the pursuit of a greener future.

Ultimately, the purpose of this study is to provide a solution addressing limited sources

and high cost of energy in rural areas. Creating productive and effective alternative sources of

energy from a portable fan. Hence, this study explores the potential of portable fans as an

alternative energy source to contribute to the success and to support our local community for

energy development.
