A. Create short dialogues from the following situations, using one or two
heads or tails.

1. You’re in a restaurant. Talk to each other or to a waiter about one

or more of these things: where you’re going to sit; what you see on
the menu; what the food is like; the people you see.

Siti: "Where do you want to sit, Adi?"

Adi: "How about by the window, Siti? I like natural light."

Siti: "Have you checked out the menu, Adi?"

Adi: "Yes, there are so many options, Siti! I'm thinking of trying Nasi
Goreng."
Siti: "I noticed they have a special Rendang dish too."

Siti (to the waiter): "What's your recommendation?"

Waiter: "Our chef's special today is the Gado-Gado. It's delicious!"
Adi: "I might go with that then."

Adi: "Look at that painting on the wall, Siti. It's so colorful and beautiful."
Siti: "And the decorations in here are really unique too."
Adi: "It adds to the atmosphere of this restaurant."

2. You’re in a clothes shop. Talk to each other or to a salesperson

about one or more of these things: the clothes that you can see;
trying on a jacket or a pair of shoes; the prices; whether items of
clothes would suit you.

Anton: "Hi, Ani, what do you think of these wide-leg pants?"

Ani: "They look good, Anton. Maybe you should try them on?"

[Anton goes to the fitting room and tries on the pants.]

Anton: "And what's your opinion on this crop top, Ani?"

Ani: "It's quite fashionable, Anton. Give it a try and see how the outfit
comes together."
[Anton comes out wearing wide-leg pants and the crop top.]

Anton: "Do you believe these shoes complement the outfit, Ani?"
Ani: "Hmm, perhaps not those. Let's ask the salesperson for a suggestion."

[They call over the salesperson.]

Salesperson: "Hello, how can I assist you?"

Ani: "We're uncertain if these shoes match this outfit. What's your advice?"
Salesperson: "I'd recommend trying these other shoes. They might be a
better fit."

Anton: "What's the price for these wide-leg pants?"

Salesperson: "The wide-leg pants are 200,000 IDR, but we have a special
on crop tops today, and the crop top is 70,000 IDR. Would you like to
purchase them?"

Ani: "I think I'll take the wide-leg pants and the crop top. They look
fantastic together."
Anton: "I'll continue searching for shoes that complement the outfit.
Thanks for your assistance!"

B. Identify the ellipsis and complete them into standard English

language.

3. E: How long are your parents away?

E. Read the following dialogue and answer the question.

BB: Yeah. I was okay until I had a rather nasty experience about er,
height. Until then I was okay. I could go anywhere. But er, I was
er, on a lighthouse actually. We were being taken round it. We
went up all the stairs and to the light, er, room. And then the
chap says ‘Oh, come on. Right, we’ll go out here.’ I went through
the door. And I was on this very very narrow little parapet …
CB: Yeah.
BB: … with a rail about – perhaps eighteen inches high …
CB: Mm.
BB: … and then a sheer drop of about a hundred feet or something. I
was absolutely petrified. I’ve never been as scared like that before
CB: or since.
BB: That’s very frightening.
And, you know, I sort of edged round. I couldn’t go back through
the same door. I edged round and managed to find the other door.
And that’s it. Ever since then, if I go up a ladder, I’m scared stiff
now. It really is, it’s er, changed my whole life, you know.
Absolutely frightening, that.

Rewrite BB’s story as though it were part of a letter. Begin with the
words:
Dear CB,

I have been frightened of heights ever since I had a frightening experience

years ago. Before that, I had no fear and could go anywhere without a
second thought. But everything changed during a visit to a lighthouse.

We were on a guided tour, and after climbing all the stairs to reach the
light room, the guide suggested we go outside. I followed him through the
door, only to find myself on a narrow parapet with a rail about eighteen
inches high. Beyond that rail was a sheer drop of about a hundred feet. I
was paralyzed with fear, and I've never been that scared before or since.

I cautiously edged my way around the narrow path, unable to go back

through the same door. Eventually, I found another exit and escaped the
terrifying situation.

Since that day, even being near heights or climbing a ladder fills me with
paralyzing fear. This experience has changed my life profoundly, and I've
never been able to overcome that fear.

Sincerely,
BB
